what happens when you take a track by a british power trio heavily influenced by blues and psychedelia, and get a master of wayward, left-of-centre balearica to remix it? that’s the premise behind claremont 56’s latest vinyl outing, which features magic feet recordings boss craig bratley delivering a pair of druggy, spaced-out interpretations of “better man”, one of the more laidback outings from fast-rising rock combo bella figura.

jack cutter is a songwriter and guitarist based in the san francisco bay area in california. he started with a $5 banjo just after finishing high school. in university, during the late 60’s, he performed with bar bands in buffalo, new york. after completing university and a year as an aerospace engineer, he decided that attack helicopters were not really what the world needed and so he headed off to california in pursuit of music and mystic times. fast forward to fall 2014: jack is playing his quintessential tune, ‘gift of our fathers’ in the sf bart subway to an onslaught of morning commuters when he was spotted by 40 thieves. eureka! love at first sight and in the next few months, two of jack’s original acoustic pieces were given the 40 thieves treatment. enter david sanderson aka david harks, a singer, songwriter, producer and label curator from the east sussex region of the uk. ‘having fallen in love with the cosmic boogie (of 40 thieves classic ‘backward love’) i really felt i would love nothing more than to write a tune with them. layne got back in touch with a track he was working on entitled serpent strut with jack cutter and we worked via email over a few months to brew up that misty soul.’ deep, stony, psychedelic, drawing from the well of hawkwind, joni mitchell, david crosby, baffo banfi and tolkien-tinged acoustic led zep, the proof of concept is now complete and in the capable and loving hands of claremont 56.

it was the spring of 2007 when paul ‘mudd’ murphy and kevin pollard announced the arrival of the former’s claremont 56 label with “villa stavros”, a magical first collaborative 12”. it seems somewhat fitting, then, that claremont 56’s final release of its’ first decade will be “n7 odyssey”, the first collaborative album from mudd & pollard.

ricky l and marcoradi have been friends for as long as they can remember. they first met on the dancefloor of one of italy’s most iconic clubs, red zone in perugia, where ricky has been a resident dj for the best part of 25 years. now, they’ve joined forces in the studio for the first time, uniting under the hear & now alias for claremont 56. those with a keen knowledge of italian dance music will know their impressive track records. both have a history of producing fine deep house records and remixes for the likes of ibadan, uomo, reincarnation, top tracks, restricted tracks and vega records. with hear & now, they’ve decided to step back from the dancefloor, instead producing hazy, emotion-rich music for after-hours listening, and mornings spent blinking into the sunshine.

six years ago, claremont 56 boss paul ‘mudd’ murphy tried to track down via his dj network, former freeez band-members john rocca and andy stennett to license pink rhythm’s “melodies of love”, for one of the originals compilations. they didn’t show up on the radar.
earlier this year, however, out of the blue, stennett got in touch with murphy. for much of the last two decades, he’d been living on a remote island off orkney, but was now pursuing music again.

earlier this year, an email dropped into the claremont 56 inbox. it was from a producer in the early stages of his musical career called simon peter, and contained a joyous slice of languid, organic balearica entitled ‘arc of lark’. suitably impressed, claremont 56 boss paul murphy had no hesitation in snapping up the track right away.

you would be forgiven for not knowing the newest addition to the slowly expanding claremont 56 roster. you see, there has been no recorded output from german combo bambi davidson since the release of their largely overlooked minimal post-rock debut album, el faco, in 2000. until now, that is.

it has been a long time between drinks for german band bambi - and it is something of a triumphant return, too. last time we heard from them, back in 2000, they were a post minimal rock duo comprising of guitarist/vocalist robin van velzen and drummer hans christian fuss. a decade and a half of live improvisation and a multitude of collaborations later, they return as a balearic rock four-piece. the bands newest members, former mountaineer man frank mollena and sofia fuss, were asked to join following a particularly successful series of live collaborations and improvisational jams. through balearic post-rock territory, with van velzens weary, emotional vocals riding a wave of vibrant colours, backwards hazy, intoxicating and evocative, it sounds like a horizontal anthem in the making. one sided, hand numbered, limited to 500 copies.

given that paul mudd murphy, ben smith, ursula major and krautrock legend holgar czukay debuted their bison project back in 2010, this debut album has been a long time coming. happily, it was worth the wait. recorded at czukays legendary cologne studio and featuring mix-downs from conrad idjut, travellers is a particularly dubwise trawl through hazy, krautrock-influenced disco and horizontal balearica. by anyones standards, its a deliciously intergalactic concoction a fearlessly atmospheric blend of low-slung grooves, delay-laden horns, quirky percussion, stargazing electronics and mesmerizing, eyes-wide-shut vocals. pleasingly, this cd version also includes a pair of fine extended versions of former single mandy by mudd, of which the intoxicating dub is particularly potent.

smith & mudd are back in fine style on claremont 56, following up their excellent lp with this great double header! >sauna love< is the lead track, an uptempo, string laden boogie house affair with great vibes, bass, strings and punchy percussion all rolling along into the sunshine. on side-b >the surveyor< is a great piece of otherworldly electronic music, coming on like some weird cough medicine induced dream. the bass pulses along with mystery dialogue, light key flourishes and an intent that is delivered about 5 minutes in when the kick drops and the whole thing shifts into a latenight, alt disco bomb.

between 1978 and 1984 can as a group were utilising the innerspace studio in cologne less frequently in order to search for new ways to develop their sound and creativity. however drummer jaki liebezeit and holger continued to record and experiment at the studio and czukay considers this time as the most fruitful and creative period they spent together. born from this time was >secret life< and >in space< and these are presented on a white vinyl disc in a fantastic full colour thick card sleeve. limited & hand-numbered!

bison settles into cans legendary innerspace studio to flex their oddball lowslung muscle on this limited 7inch. the result is mandy, a seedy late night boogie in a private smoking club with jj cale and mark lanegan, on the set of a sci-fi b-movie at the wrong end of an underpass... check!

at the age of 43 holger czukay was working on a message for his fans. he kept it unreleased for 30 years. music is a miracle takes you on 18 minute time travel through holger’s own musical universe. he gives the listener the chance to become a part of his world of music giving sound examples of the following tracks: ode to perfume, fragrance, 2 bass shuffle, witches multiplication table which were released on the album >on the way to the peak of normal< in 1981. side b is an unreleased version of ode to perfume that was created in holgers home lab and in the can studio. his friend and producer conny plank helped him with a cheap korg vocoder and they recorded the music on one of the first 16-track recorders of mci.

good morning story was originally released on cd in 1999 and was never officially released on vinyl. here in a brand new format, holger has added 3 previously unreleased tracks and has written new sleeve notes about the journey in making this album: the first piece of electronic music i ever heard was in a conservatory in the middle of the fifties. the audience was laughing during the presentation including myself... today this album also marks my entrance into the world of digital production working with a magneto optical disc recorder. creating the music over the period of 10 years was also a time of joy and adventure. with all claremont 56 release we urge you to send pre-orders as this is a ltd. 500, gatefold hand numbered release!

ltd one sided 10 300 copies only, first come first served! track taken from originals 4. when i was growing up, the only rock record in the house apart from the beatles was a christian rock record: straight talker by bristol band amaziah, my dad was a huge fan. my brother and i listened to it each day, as our matchbox ferraris traced intricate road networks on the patterned living room carpet. soon we knew every word, wah wah solo and squiggly synth noise off by heart. we loved it. and who could thought fifteen years later, while picking through piles of junk in the shed we found this forgotten treasure and searched for the owners and finally gave it a release on our label. so paul and jez, along with dave steel, derek elliott, richard grinter, phil williams, gerald davies and keith loring – and most of all my dad - this is for you.

smith & mudd follow their second album, le suivant with something that goes a bit darker. side a is a chuggy affair where the beats drive a bit harder than their usual tracks but the lushness and the bass groove are still there. a beautiful electric violin solo takes the second half to a different place. side b is a deep bass journey that sounds like jean luc ponty and terry callier combined with a but of led zep. fantastic stuff. check

czukay co-founded can in 1968. he played bass guitar and performed most of the recording and engineering for the group. this part of ode to perfume hadn?t been released in the past as the full version became too long to fit on one side of a 12?? lp. during the preparation of my back catalogue i found this forgotten part on the master tape and presented it on the short circuit festival 2009 in london for the first time. together with a first played guitar i sang a new line over a vocoder. drummer jaki liebezeit from can gave me support. this is strictly limited to 500 and comes with a full colour hand numbered sleeve.

fist of facts began life in a basement studio on ludlow street, downtown manhattan, in the mid-80s. the bastard child of liquid liquids salvatore prinicipato & ken man caldeira (part of the liquid liquid extended family and original liquid idiot member) the band lasted nearly a decade during which they created a uniquely downtown new york sound. these tracks sat in storage on cassette tape for 25 years are a part of music history. none of them have ever been heard by the public and it will be released as a hand numbered, 4 colour sleeve limited to 500 12 inches.

this is an absolute balearic beauty. mendes & alþada, from portugal, release their first 12inch and it doesnt dissapoint. a head nodding 80bpm chugger with a beautiful guitar loop sat on a gritty analog line makes you want to put your hands up and wave them from side to side. label favourites, the idjut boys get pete z in and add percussion and more girth to make it another classic remix. absolutely essential.

ahmed fakroun a singer/songwriter from libya is widely considered the foremost pioneer of modern arabic world music. his 1977 hit misyan has been recently edited and its production shows how ahead of his time he was. ahmed, a fan of claremont, teams up with mudd to create a bohannon style groove that will give you neck ache from head nodding. beautiful cellos from robin faze action slide in and out and a warm rhodes vamp keeps pushing it towards the next part in the journey. brennan green takes the remix duty and adds another classic remix to claremonts collection. this is something special.
