abba war eine schwedische popgruppe und eine der weltweit populärsten musikgruppen ihrer zeit. mit fast 400 millionen1 verkauften tonträgern gehört abba zu den erfolgreichsten bands der musikgeschichte.die band formierte sich 1972. ihren internationalen durchbruch schaffte sie 1974 mit dem sieg ihres titels waterloo beim eurovision song contest im englischen seebad brighton. charakteristisch für die gruppe waren die zu dieser zeit ausgefallenen bunt-poppigen kostüme.

die aufnahmen für das album begannen mit knowing me, knowing you und that s me. nach einer pause im april wurden im mai money, money, money und happy hawaii auf band gebracht. im juni folgte when i kissed the teacher, im juli dum dum diddle und tiger und im august my love, my life, why did it have to be me? und das für das album namensgebende instrumentalstück arrival. im september wurden lediglich einige overdubs zu einigen titeln hinzugefügt, bevor das album am 11. oktober 1976 veröffentlicht wurde.
