(get bad). the result? one of the most unlikely and essential party records of 2017. queen and house music: not necessarily the most obvious of bedfellows, but music for freaks has never been a label to take the path most travelled. over the course of their de-cades long journey the label founded by luke solomon and justin harris has released uni-quely idiosyncratic dance music, establishing the label as a go-to imprint for those seeking imaginative, unpredictable records that still undeniably work on the dancefloor. their latest release might well be among the most out-there of them all. originally released back in 1984,two sharp pencils (get bad) is a record by queen drum-mer roger taylor, featuring him on vocals as well as drums, bass & guitar. now brought bang up to date via a fully official and endorsed remix courtesy of anna wall & corbi, this overlooked album track looks set to become one of the summers most essential records. born and bred in the uk, anna wall is a dj, producer and label owner who is a key player in london�s underground house music scene. her label the bricks champions up-and-coming producers, while anna herself has djd all over the world, most recently for mixmag at pacha for their ims launch party. corbi is an ibiza-based dj and producer, a&r for the highly respected fina records and co-founder of melon bomb, a party and dj collective that has in the space of just a couple of years become one of the white isles most talked-about exports. having met while working at house giant defected records some years ago, anna felt that corbi would be the perfect studio accomplice to work on the remix of two sharp pencils.

dj support comes from ben ufo, jon k and hodge. semtek returns with his first work since 2012, when he contributed 12inches to world unknown, awkward movements and in plain sight. in the meantime the cambridge-born, bristol-based producer and dj has been hard at work running his label don t be afraid, bringing through talent including mr beatnick and mgun. bad teeth consists of nothing more complicated than two complementary tracks for the dancefloor, inspired by bleep n bass, jungle and two-step. the title track rolls moody synths, metallic stabs and offbeat drums into a rugged uk house joint. jon of worcester twists similar elements around a broken groove, cutting between drum machine and breakbeats. both tracks feature rolling basslines tuned for maximum soundsystem pressure.

no bad days is back for round 2. �in the galleria� slides in with dreamlike pads and a real euphoric feel to the whole track. just right for those balearic sunsets. second on the a side is �celestial bodies� - a melodic freestyle jam that makes us feel like we�re down at the arcade playing �out run� on a dusty mega drive.
over to the flip we start off with the title track, �lunar waves� beginning with a tougher feel it hints at a hardware acid workout... but half way in roberto hits you with those dreamy pads again and just has us in his hands for that synth solo at the end! rounding off the ep perfectly is �when u come around�, a real �end of summer sitting down at the park with your mates� kind of track...mmm...

oddball space disco tracks compiled from library tracks composed between 1975 and 1978. big tip!! from the early 70s to the mid-80s, this self-taught musician composed about twenty albums of production and library music with generic cover art and titles (out of the way, magical ring, keys of the future, pulsations, more and more, etc.) that evoke interstellar travel. these experimental discs, made with love, humility and rudimentary means, had no ambition other than to accompany other peoples images. by exhuming these obscurities from the dustbin of history, born bad have decided otherwise. archaeologists with an agenda, they seek to give jean pierre decerf the renown he deserves: that of an innovator whose rhythmic, synthetic compositions inspired the harbingers of the french touch (air comes to mind), not to mention some east coast rappers.

polish wunderkind selvy inaugurates no bad days with the pops ep, four tracks of tropical & grandiose house music. pops opens up with a bold statement in �wishing well�, a peak­time epic with the sort of disney­via­john carpenter sweeping flourishes. following that is �basics�, perhaps the most playful of all the tracks: all bouncy synth melody, groovy bassline and dreamy pads. on the flip, �bump pump� is arguably the most energetic helping on the ep, a percussive workout with gongs and all. if crash bandicoot was to make house music, this is close to how he�d sound. rounding the release off is the title track �pops�, perhaps the most original and subtle track with colourful vhs synths and strange sounds pinging across the mix.

almost 25 years have past since his first release, yet >the true story of house music< is the first time elbee bads catalog gets compiled for re-release. although the best and most prolific part of his catalog is his late 80s and early 90s output, booker never stopped producing (and djing). he is currently residing in berlin, from which he still manages his studio and travels throughout europe to dj.

raf pisani and marco conte, aka audiomatiques, have long been involved in techno but its since they began working together as audiomatiques that everything began to click. together with roberto capuano, an artist who has already released for loose, claque musique, monique musique and suara, the duo have delivered 3 sterling tracks, which are backed by a remix from rino cerrone, for loose. cerrone takes full advantage of his position as label boss and places his remix of >so bad< in pole. its a walloping but low slung affair riddled with hypnotic rises and false drops which build incredible tension. in original form, >so bad< is a pounding affair. the focus is centred around an unholy bass heavy kick with just the minimum of percussive flourishes and vocal effects doing the rest with aplomb. >mind trip<, while equally as heavy, is fluid and slick. swinging tribal vibes and some clever effects work paired with an airtight arrangement makes for a surefire club burner. finally, the bizarre yet compelling leads of the aptly titled >crazy synth< close proceedings with a fever-dream fervour. original and memorable, this is a genuinely anthemic cut.
