the kurl project started in the summer of 2014 where the primary concept was to sonically encompass the various influences of a twenty-year musical journey. the essence of kurls sound is mainly deep dub with hints of house groove that create a very unique sound environment connecting the listener to his lifestyle and movement. at the root of “sacred fire” is a very special love story. kurl started an emotional partnership, a genuine brotherhood with mj white, one of the pioneers of the soulful house music sound of the new york ’90s. marshall james white appeared on many hits in the nyc club scene including scandalous still irresistible just to name one. he tragically passed away in november 2015. mj white gives soul to sacred fire by writing the lyrics and interpreting it with so much passion that kurl was able to transform this track into an eternal love song. for kurl, mj white will remain the angel with a heavenly voice, and above all, a memory that will mark his internal and musical journey for the rest of his days in the words of mj white music has a huge heart that beats inside all of us.

these songs were made over the past 2 and a half years by uchi: luna (january 2016), was named after a talking cat. it s kind of a sad story. you will find some synth sounds, three different kick drums, and a couple hi-hats. it s kind of moody. you can take it as it is, or not. pride is poison (july 2014) ironically, it s titled after experiencing dosages of unhealthy relationships, though it might be the one people like the most. it s sad-ish, noisy, bouncie, and bassie? that about sums it up. inc (february 2016) is titled after the international noise conference, where it was recorded. actually it s a 3 part spliced zoom room recording of a 25min long improvisation, made in a punk bar. the argument here holds, is it really worth it to make perfect music? where is the concept of -live- in techno anyways? it doesn t matter. it s just a semi-distorted recording of a moment that meant nothing to almost no one, and yet it lives.

midi deux entertainment is proud to present you the first ep of theo muller. this maxi starts with the shadowy atmospherics of « turbo drift ». then « focus » lays down a murky techno beat alongside trippy synths. on the other side, theo collaborates with steaward to deliver a massive big room track « en vadrouille ». the ep is closed by a slow tempo techno « yo low » with warm bass and heavy-hitting tones. a promising dubbed-out essay.

cosi002 further documents an emerging, ex-germanic theory of perth dance music, typified by tracks built on techno’s stern compositional logic, but poly-functional and cross-disciplinary, wearing the stripes given to them by this most nonpareil of electronic music ecosystems.
the ep has both dance floor heft and mood-focused flexes. “the hunt” is a solarised, laser-sharpened and hi-hat driven garage/big room hybrid. 8-minute “m is for audio” is a workhorse techno slow burner with all the red-eyed melancholy of greats like “acid eiffel” and “deep burnt”, acid burnt and stinging at the mid-range. conversely, “rube” abounds with percussive warmth and ear-dancing patterns, as does “freshness and convenience”, a bastard union of dusty breaks and a hard funk bassline. the ep ends with ambient cyber walkabout “freetown”, peripatetic, matte-toned and pulsing with vital signs.

with its tenth dmt release, philippe petit drops energovill, a big room techno bomb driven by a repetitive synth pad and a dreamy distorted saxophone line that will leave nobody indifferent. philippe then strips down the track even more to deliver a dub oriented, beat-heavy version of the track. on the other side, ubx127, from the figure stable, is on remix duties: he takes the key elements from philippe s versions and turns the title track into an unforgiving minimal techno attack. philippe closes the ep and reworks energovill once again, this time into a melodic, atmospheric and dreamy beatless version.

blaring and unnerving, yyyy s intention of mortal gets revisited with a remix package featuring lucy, varg, ascion and yyyy themselves, resulting in a barrage of arpeggiated behaviour and regimented soundscapes. a force pushing forward creativity with on-point refinement, lucy immediately veers in with his visceral power of sound. an avalanche of intricate and experimental arrangement soon meets a series of astute percussion and typical foreboding energy, retaining a certain texture-over-beat throughout. yyyy s depth of music imagination & influence is heard in this highly charged, awestricken ensemble for their rework of intention of mortal . unfolding a mixture of fear and complication, this track keeps you thinking as well as moving. an almost endless supply of plucked synth rhythm keeps the chaos taut and throughout. ascion s remix of stone relief of gods faces credits the release with clean kicks, industrial clanks and atmospheric keys. this no-nonsense approach to production is not to be underestimated, a dream-state sequence of induced electronic abstraction. the first and most immediate observation of b2 is vargs take on reach for forgiveness - a menacing, pin-sharp account of the visceral power of techno, dialling in to both tense and euphoric. the ambiguity of each track lends itself to its success, meticulous in detail and curated with passion. a release that divulges the mysterious sonic world and deviates from the expected.

after a split release with chambray on ben sims’ hardgroove in 2016 greek-producer george tounisidis is set to drop a new 12” for symbolism in november entitled ‘solidarity’. with his first two cuts for the british dj’s imprint picking up support from the likes of dvs1, jackmaster and anthony parasole it’s unsurprising sims has tapped him for a full release on symbolism. since signing, tracks from ‘solidarity’ have also featured in both ben sims’ boiler room and run it red radio shows, resulting in a barrage of requests for release details which tees up the ep nicely. musically, ‘solidarity’ moves between scattered sequences and stabs (‘three clicks left’ & ‘solidarity’), muted hypnotics (‘nekyia’) and fractured acid (‘workers’) while all retaining the distinct sense of movement and dynamism that typifies symbolism releases.

lord of the isles, a.k.a. neil mcdonald, has spent the better part of a decade steadily producing and releasing beautiful music. the esp institute has always wholeheartedly believed in neil’s work ethic and his journey as an artist who constantly refines his vision, and when we inevitably approached in hopes of working together, we were enamoured by the sheer breadth and depth of work he had in progress’. there are two types of artists. one internalises their process, endlessly perfecting their work while finding the endpoint a massive hurdle, in turn they produce immaculate yet very little art. the other is continuously inspired, so full of ideas they can barely work fast enough to articulate them all. the art becomes by-product of their larger trajectory and not just a collection of endpoints. lord of the isles seems to be both, always in an evolving state of process where the work is constantly shed to make way for the new layer growing beneath, yet he holds his cards closely, cherry picking when and with whom he releases his art into the world. neil is simply prolific. he shared with us a vast catalog of unheard beauty, which over a long span of time was collaboratively shaped into his debut album “in waves”. the title speaks to neil’s process both intimately and from afar, it speaks to the emotional ebb and flow of the music itself, and ultimately it speaks to the listener. ahead of the album’s release, we are proud to share with you the single ‘weh-in’, a mesmerizing arpeggio melody that opens and closes, purrs and barks, and plays nicely with its percussive accompaniment over more than 10 minutes. this lengthy single version of the track is joined by a dark and stormy, exclusive non-album cut entitled ‘pik’, as well as a big room rave remix by esp institute resident ian blevins, which take us to a slightly more frantic place while retaining the euphoric essence of the original.

nice price deal !!! it s been a big shock for all of us to hear the sad news that our good friend andreas gehm passed away this year. his last big project is the -worldwide electronics- - series on his own label -cologne underground- which brings his friends from all over the world together. the idea of „worldwide electronics“ is to combine music from all over the world on one album (in fact, there will be a vol.2 too). the second idea was to combine well known artist with newcomer. when gehm, who runs cologne underground together with dbh distribution, ask the artist for tracks, he don’t ask for any specific style. the artist were free to deliver whatever they want. so at the end it ended up from deep house (oldschool definition, not edm definition) to acid. „worldwide electronics vol.1“ contains one track from greece (dimdj), germany (hardfloor), netherlands (baz reznik), england (perseus traxx), columbia(s.valencia) 2 tracks from japan (takeshi kouzuki and jin-cromanyon) and the first of hopefully a row of collaboration tracks from legowelt (netherlands) and elec pt.1 (germany) as „gehm & wolfers).

laura jones unveiled her new label sensoramic in may with sam and karousel cutting the opening tape in appropriate style. for the second release laura delivers her first ep since 2014. after taking time out to experiment in the studio and refine her style, the why question marks an evolution in the uk producer s output delivering two incendiary underground club cuts ably remixed by trevino and u-more. two veterans working under aliases, trevino is of course better known as legendary drum n bass producer marcus intalex who has more recently found a home for his 4/4 output on klockworks, the nothing special and his own label, birdie. u-more is italian veteran and berliner, ivan iacobucci, fresh from releasing on apollonia and a slew of underground minimalist labels who delivers a late night acid laden afterhours workout to compliment trevino s big room counterpart.

growing more deeply into raars punk ethos, maelstrom and louisahhh s tracks on the labels fourth release are as much about process as end product. several days of one-room, one-take live sessions involving guitar feedback, machine cacophony and endless growling and shouting resulted in hurry and listen. these song were molded into work that is at once unconventional and club-ready with much effort in preserving the feral qualities of the original material.

why making a techno record in 2016? in the vast stream of new releases and the everlasting quest of new musical boundaries, blint002 tries to focus on the essentials of pattern-based clubmusic. both tracks started as late night studio jams, using only a drummaschine, a synth and some pedals. while 92 avenue ended up being a straightfoward technotrack, including a massive breakdown for everybody still awake and dancing, you have i dont have is incorporating some boomy hiphop aesthetic without loosing its connection to the dancefloor. both tracks are linked by their unresting synthlines, straying around, trapped in a noisey room full of smoke and distortion. bouncing back to the inital question, the answer with this record seems pretty clear: techno is still nothing but pure dark fun.
