following on from his long awaited album ku:palm in november of last year, we now see its lead track pyramid get a vinyl release on photeks own label, photek productions. the eastern instrumentation and spacey beats may not be apt for every dance floor, but for fans of modus operandi era photek, pyramid is an essential tune. on the flip we have oshun, another track from ku:palm this time remixed by beneath, a producer that began making waves last year with a series of 12 inches on his own label, no symbols and a cracking mix for fact mag. he has gone on to release the illusions ep on dusk & blackdowns keysound recordings, as well as a 12 inch on pinchs influential tectonic recordings. mixing the darkest elements of funky, dub and syncopated grime with a distinctly uk edge, beneaths complex layered beats result in a truly unique sound that is a perfect matched to remix fellow experimentalist photek. a young producer that clearly knows his shit, beneath is a breath of fresh air.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. dope me / does caroline know? is a slightly clubbier affair-less sun ra and more soul capsule-but still possesses the air of strangeness that makes the duo so unique. each artist leaves his mark within the first few measure of dope me. the steady high-hats and flawless kick drum are straight out of dazes playbook, while the nervous piano and 3 chairs-style claps are unmistakably bruno. as for the slurred vocal pleading >dope me..dope me<, thats anyones guess. the track carries on for a solid nine minutes as half-melodies and quasi-hooks slide in and out of the mix. the b-side, does caroline know?, takes us deeper and darker. the drums are plodding, the mood is ominous, and a series of dreamlike flourishes add to an already eerie groove. like the a-side, its a surrealistic style of house that only these two could deliver. the artwork, as usual, is done by daze maxim.
