a burning desire to just fuckin rhyme. on my last couple of albums i challenged myself with regard to formats, trying to push the envelope as far as what exactly constitutes a rap record. talking (bleep) and problems were my last two lead singles, both markedly unconventional. i adore both of those songs and i adore both of those albums specifcally for the new creative fulfllment i enjoyed while making them. there’s much more of that to come, but after spending 3 years outside of the box i was left with a burning desire to just fuckin rhyme. thats veins. - homeboy sandman

there arent many artists that can lay claim to having put out records on labels as divergent as rough trade and john talabot’s hivern discs. perhaps this is because few artists express such genuine diversity in their musical tastes and creative explorations as david kitt. since the turn of the decade as new jackson he has mined a seam of driving, ghostly house to run parallel with his solo strand of ambient folk electronica. his debut release in 2011 the night mail on pogo channeled early record collection heroes aphex twin and orbital through to drexciya and projekt pm but had one foot firmly in the 21st century beaming in like some futuristic cyberballad. on the flip side hussle free had that mix of house and boogie sensibilities with dark and dusty synths and vocoder that would become a signature. this was followed by acclaimed releases on hivern, permanent vacation, major problems, apartment and most recently cin cin. his debut album set for release on all city in may was recorded in kitt’s bedroom studio overlooking dublin bay, its nocturnal hues very much a product of the nightshift often working on headphones with the rest of his housemates fast asleep. it takes full advantage of the scope of the lp format, ebbing and flowing between deep house club ready gems and more restrained and meditative beatless moments for the morning after. the recording process yielded many eureka moments with kitt finally nailing sounds that had hitherto proved elusive. a key moment was getting a bank loan to buy an sp 1200 sampler

the visionary musician and record producer augustus pablo made some of the most unique and individual recordings in the history of reggae. as with his friend and mentor, jackie mittoo, the man born horace swaby was of mixed indian and african heritage, and although his middleclass background might have pointed him in a very different direction, the lure of jamaica’s sound system culture captured him at a young age, particularly after debilitating health problems saw him drop out of school. he began recording as a session keyboardist as the 60s gave way to the 70s, but everything changed when a schoolfriend introduced him to the melodica, a small plastic keyboard operated by a mouthpiece, which he used on seminal recordings for producer herman chin-loy, credited to augustus pablo on release. during the early 1970s, pablo crafted melodica instrumentals for all of the leading reggae producers, scoring ‘best instrumental’ for ‘java’ in 1973, and launching the rockers label to showcase self-produced work at the same time. this multifaceted compilation, first issued on bunny lee’s attack label in 2005, compiles memorable melodica interpretations of some of lee’s greatest productions, recorded over dub cuts of immortal numbers such as cornell campbell’s ‘queen of the minstrel’ and john holt’s ‘my desire.’ reissued on lp and cd with bonus tracks!

nathan bartell grew up in a little town called ashburn, georgia but soon moved to atlanta georgia where he began to perform in the night clubs. in 1973 he released “top going down, bottom going up” on the soul-po-tion label. bartell remembers: “at the time i was having family problems. my wife didn’t want me and i was deep in love. i felt at that time that i was at the bottom of the pit and i wanted to rise up out of that mess because my wife made me feel that i was a nobody. i was not good enough for her - nobody wants you when you are down and out. she felt that she were on the top and i was on the bottom. this song was a message at that time.” there is nothing for us to add except that we are delighted to bring this little beauty back to new life.

this release - a collaboration between ali x (alphonse from azari & iii) and mexicos theus mago - turns the heat up all the way to on and just leaves it there. the lyrical content of the title track would lead many to use descriptors like sexy, sleazy, and steamy like you wouldnt even believe, and while the music also bears that out its important to remember not to stigmatize something that almost everyone does at least a couple of times a week. vision, meanwhile, offers the perfect b-side accompaniment, a sci-fi techno workout where you dont even have to think about sex if you dont want to. the ep features dub versions of both tracks for more stripped-down club sets aimed at people who understandably have problems with the sound of the human voice. it also includes a remix by curses, whom we recently bumped into (he says cornered) in berlin and asked if hed provide one of his trademark eerie downtempo excursions. long story short: he said yes.

mannheim duo ho do ri s lost in betty s ford is an exercise in restraint with the ep delving into the deeper realms of house music. elotrans kick things off with its shuffling percussion lending the track more of a jacking vibe. high level boost ups the energy whilst still retaining a distinctly left field vibe whilst k for the models delves into murkier realms in a superbly wonky way. back problems rounds things off with a sub-aquatic ride reminiscent of baby ford at his most coherent.

despite the renewed interest in music from kenyas past, finding these tracks and their rights holders hasnt become any easier. only a handful of music archives around the world harbour collections of kenyan music, and just a few private collectors in kenya and abroad have been sharing catalogue info online or privately. one of the problems with east african music of this era is that much of it was originally released only on 45 rpm, seven-inch vinyl singles, many of which were only ever produced in tiny runs of a few hundred. 45s with their thin, paper sleeves do not age as well as lps and are often far more susceptible to the elements

among all the aliases used by the great piero umiliani, m. zalla is perhaps his most rich and surprisingly multifarious: mainly used to produce experimental records that had little commercial appeal, this ‘nom de plume’ (along with moggi) is tied to memorable episodes of his career, releases such as “problemi d’oggi” (literally “today’s problems”), “mondo inquieto” (i.e. “an unsettling world”), and also “suspense”, now reissued by schema records. the vinyl release includes a cd-copy of the album.

materia ep is the second installment of ruhig s double ep, inaugurated with particles ep in january 2016. originally the records were supposed to be out in the same period, but due to problems with our ex-distribution, materia ep got postponed of few months. the release starts with the transcendent trento, respecting ruhig s tradition of broken beats idm deep techno leaning openers. consecutive cut the vector is a thumping mixtures of drones and heavyweight hihats designed with some attention for dancefloor. the slow-burner materia delivers some powerful mist-shrouded kicks on the b-side, that wraps up with sciame, a massive droning wave of electro wasps, which still keeps some classy chilled out elements somewhere in the background, behind the thunderous main drums. vinyl unfortunately left no space for the extra only digital track 1870, this last one is percussive retro-futuristic jam of psychedelic mouth arp and huge mallets drums. the track will be available for free download in the same period of the vinyl

willie burns (the trilogy tapes/wt records/ l.i.e.s. records) complements this unusual walk in the woods by absorbing it into his warehouse banger signature. burns rework focuses on micro events of the original to create a sort of granular house version out of them. the adventure continues on a somewhat melancholic turn with we have been here before and sometimes as the b side. while we have been before is a more dancefloor-oriented take to krautrocks signature synthline layering, sometimes is norwells venture into a more techno universe than he’s mostly associated with to come out with a soothing, yet banging work. as digital bonuses, norwell offers glimpse a short but catchy synth jam riddled with different layers of complexity. this piece is then taken into obscurity by farbwechsel records boss s olbricht for a ride into a 80s-cyberpunk club where people are trying to dance their problems away in a dystopian world.

this new strand release on lowriders, maleza is a very personal take on bass music, juke, west coast hiphop, jamaican music, prepared pianos, old detuned synths, odd time signatures and huge live reverbs. the idea of the record came when i was going through a lot of personal struggle and i was not able to get out of it. in the same period i decided to run in the woods near my home early in the morning. i ran every day, and ran and ran. eventually i got out of my problems. so i left the maleza away. this is a very personal record, each sound has a deep meaning about me and my loved ones. maleza means bad herbs, weeds, undergrowth in spanish.

earlier on this year andy stott found himself playing on the same bill as new york heavy metal hoarders batillus. despite operating in completely different spheres, batillus had been playing luxury problems, stotts most recent album, on their tourbus and suggested a remix. the result is pressed up on this one-sided 12inch, a deadly reduction that pitches the original down into the abyss. andy stott will be back in 2014 with new material.

hot on the heels of dj deeps inaugural kern mix for tresor comes *kern vol.2*, selected and mixed by gigolos boss dj hell. the second 12 inch – the rarities – is a precious collection of forgotten early 90s grooves. on the a-side, none other than mr. daniel bell contributes to this special kern vol.2 with a track that has never seen the light of day since its year of production, 1992 – the chicago style version of his legendary blip title. a collectors piece. the b-side starts with nyc 90s lenny dee and ralphie dees (aka major problems) overdose, a 1990 relentless number originally released on nu groove. back to 92 with sub-cultures - dreams released on hayden browns own imprint strobe. all mixes on the original and rare 12 inch are simply excellent, and dj hell chooses here the forgotten tribal life mix.

it is no secret that ben watt has chosen to close his acclaimed label buzzin fly to new music after ten great years as one of the uks leading dance independents. but the label has chosen to go out with a bang with one final single. unearthed from the vaults are two dazzling tracks from cornerstone artists, rodamaal, and manoo and francios a. rodamaals fortune was originally completed back in 2007 but scheduling problems prevented it from being released at the time. produced by the franco-portuguese trio (rocco, darkmountaingroups alex santos and manoo) it is a stark but emotionally-charged deep-techno masterpiece, that deserves its place alongside their other classics for the label, musica feliz and insomnia. on the flip, and originally produced in 2005, is other places a long-lost track by manoo and francois a. full of summer shimmer and heavy bass tones, it was produced by the duo during their heyday at the label, and was a secret favourite of label boss, ben watt. two perfect swansongs. buzz buzz.

this is what we call european union. a greek (mr.statik / bpitch) and two italian guys (cosmic cowboys / musik gewinnt freunde) team up for doing this record on the german rotary cocktail label and a french girl (molly / rex club, rekids) and a german gentleman (marc schneider / circus company) are doing great remixes of it. if the politicans would deliver such a good work there would be no problems around!

san francisco electronic/techno pioneer kit clayton as the first in a series of new electronica releases under the banner microsolutions for mega problems. kit clayton has been releasing music on labels such as mille plateaux, seventh city, plug research for the last few years as well as his own orthlorng musork label. he is the producer of the current left-field hip-hop faves gold chains which is also released on his label in the us. kit clayton is at the front of a movement of lap-top electronic artists such as herbert, bola, sutekh, pole etc. these two tracks are firmly in the electronic dance field and have been specially recorded for soul jazz records.
