fushara aka thushara goonewardene is a london based electronic musician working with breakbeats, samples and synthesiser. a constant theme for his music is urban decay. from the late 90s fushara has been involved with the london scene as a raver, dj, and producer. he has produced experimental work for labels such as pineconemoonshine, mjazz and more recently scientific recordings. in 2015 he set up an imprint lone foundation to showcase experimental bass music collaborating with daat and others. more recently he has made a return to work with breakbeat collaborating with infest for one of his tracks on his debut on criterion records and has signed to flex recordings for a forthcoming ep. here he makes his bow on 7th storey projects with two amen-driven monsters - the a side features ascension , an epic roller with industrial atmospherics and haunting vocal snatches. this is backed up with nerve on the b side, a nine and a half minute militant amenistic assault that hits hard, just the way we like it! we re delighted to welcome fushara to our roster of talent, we are sure you will be hearing plenty more from the man going forward!

nice price deal !!! the ever-prolific curtis lynch strikes again with this new reggae roots dub series, access denied. trinidad & tobago born franz job lends his vocals to the n side of this sound system killer with a tune called >i used to<. franz describes how he used to be afraid to speak his mind but now he is a rebel for the cause. the second track on this side is from curtis lynch who plays steel pans across the rip roaring dub.
the m side features another rising reggae star, massicker, originally from jamaica and currently residing in boston. massicker is a superb writer and this tune is his calling card as he explains the decline of personal interaction due to the rise of social network sites and mobile phones. the second track on this side is the customary heavy grynch dub, with plenty of echo, reverb, drum and, of course, a devastating bassline. sure to please all lovers of roots music as well as flavours to spice the jungle and dubstep crews.

following a run of local transmissions from a sagittariun, crump, rob smith and atki2, idle hands turns its attention to berlin and the straight-up, no-nonsense techno thrust of johanna knutsson and hans berg. both respected artists and djs in their own right, the pair have been turning out 12inches together for the free spirit society, klasse and crime city disco over the past few years, but most importantly they ve been steering the excellent ufo station recordings as a vessel for their punchy, primal techno tracks. the sound on this ep taps into the pure form of stern, dark dancefloor tackle favoured at idle hands – no extraneous filler, plenty of space in the mix, but equally built with warmth and personality rather than monochrome functionality. if you need further proof, just look to the fact the ep is named after a swedish soap opera from the 90s. the bleeps and bass tones that pulse through -taggen- are so finely crafted they need not skip and dance around the arrangement. the melodic interplay on -klimax- is subtle but ultimately uplifting and optimistic where so much techno concerns itself with oppressive gloom. -bimbo- finds the pair embracing a more psychedelic approach, but even here the modulating effects processes are kept within certain boundaries so as to not dilute the impact on the floor. after all, this is music to dance to, to be felt over a large system (where possible). moving from leftfield bass excursions to minimalist 2-step, uk techno and now onto this much more continental sound, themälarviken ep continues to widen the range of idle hands musical tastes without losing sight of the complete picture.

mr. k returns to the 12inch format for the latest in his series of edits for most excellent unlimited, making the most of the long-playing wax with two contrasting cuts. first up is ike strongs boogie land, an obscure side that was originally released in 1981 and saw plenty of action at the paradise garage. krivit s edit is inspired by larry levan s technique in running the tune, focusing as larry did on the late-song breakdown before dropping into a stripped-down rendition of the undulating main groove, a boogie bomb to be sure! don t let the name fool you the enigmatic boogie man orchestra, stars of the flip side, are all about disco. the instrumental lady, lady, lady first appeared in dj sets in the summer of 75, the prime breakout year for disco, making its way from chicago all the way to clubs on both coasts despite having no national distribution. pre-dating the introduction of the 12-inch single, the song never saw release on the larger format, until now. krivit s edit takes advantage of the extended playing time by easing into the philly-style orchestral groove and letting it breath for a dramatic, building dancefloor moment.

having kicked the label off back in 2014 and been intermittent in releasing music since, cartulis music is back with the label boss at the controls for another intriguing dive into the realm of leftfield techno and electro. there s a playful bent to the snagging beat and squelchy synths on -horton- that call to mind the wobbly electro of metamatics et al, while -125 blacksmith- takes a slightly darker path without losing that acidic punch. -nael- finishes the ep off on a more experimental tip, allowing the sounds plenty of space to loll about in a dazed reverie that shares the unconventional nature of the more dancefloor-minded tracks.

londons chocky joins the dessous recordings label and shares four tracks of sublime house music on steve bugs imprint. self knowledge is a deep, techy roller clocking it at nearly 10 mins plenty of space to expand into its full potential the groove grows ever more hypnotic and engaging as the track unfolds. next up is ‘a reefa - a non too subtle reference to a certain herb that might have inspired this loose yet highly funky deep house jam. casa de estrela changes the vibe up with a more direct and jacking track even though it would work at prime time, chockys feel for space and drama make sure the track will be heard in many diverse surrounding and sets this year.

al zanders makes his debut on phonica’s main label after a sold-out release on sister label karakul and also wolf music, blind jack’s journey and his own az label. the double a-side kicks off with ‘there is rhythm’, a percussive house anthem with plenty of momemtum, a tom-tom bassline and ‘rhythm’ vocal samples and that’s even before the sun-soaked pads and euphoric synth stabs come in.

nazare is a balearic house which has been left on the slo cooker all day. with a nagging baseline and lush pads a plenty. max essa takes us on a moody balearic tropical ride for his remix.
walpole is another slice of balearic house with a throbbing bassline and trips arms. this time the remix picks up the pace a little for a more dance floor, norwegian disco-esque groove from edsc’s very own neil diablo.

london based disco outfit faze action team up with celebrated anglo/brazilian artist, nina miranda for proto house crossover. faze action have always managed to take different musical traditions and blend them to create sounds that are somehow familiar whilst simultaneously containing the unexpected. last year s mangwana, featured long time faze action collaborator, zeke manyika, singing in his native zimbabwean shona over faze action s infectious disco production. this time, british/brazilian singer, artist and all round creative force de majeur, nina miranda, takes things further with her invitation to vamos pintar or let s paint, in portuguese. on the surface there is the familiar faze action restyled proto house but it soon becomes apparent that the brothers have appropriated more than just a brazilian vocal. punchy 808 drums and fizzy synths are infused with brazilian caixa and pandaro as if they had always been designed to co-exist. the remixes come from the illustrious max essa, whose british born/tokyo resident background chimes well with the international nature of this latest offering. his slo-mo bubble dub simmers with mediterranean sun that reclines into romantic piano flourishes and dubbed out vocals, whilst the extended dub manages to draw out the original elements at their original tempo. faze action s own paradise 90 dub closes the package by keeping close to the original arrangement with added economy and plenty of dub delay of course.

composed of members buckshot, 5ft, and dj evil dee, black moon simultaneously kicked off and defined the rap renaissance of new york with the release of enta da stage in 1993. whereas plenty of earlier groups had spit rage-flled rhymes to tear down the world’s unjust establishments, no one had evoked brooding pathos or introspective anger quite like black moon.

stephen laubner never fails to deliver the goods, whether on his own label something or elsewhere. having recently popped up on the untold stories, this time around hes dropping his uniquely crusty compositions on synthetic gold. after a quietly disconcerting ambient opening, the leftfield grind of the taphead pushes an uncompromising agenda of ragged bass and an unrelenting groove. october sunrise by way of contrast is a more intimate, sweet natured affair. syntax error too taps into the softer side of laubner s craft in a most mesmerizing of ways, but for the die hard fans fear not, there s also plenty of locked groove loops included to keep you tripping into infinity.

canada’s fastest moving and hardest working collective are back with one of their finest albums to date, a brand new journey into tropical, soul and jazz styles on their scorching new release, “under burning skies”. turbulent times call for strong voices and the souljazz orchestra’s new set packs a suitably heavy lyrical punch, with wry observations and an urge for progressive change. musically, the band continue to push the limits, dusting off 80s vintage synthesizers and early drum machines for the first time, bringing lo fi disco, boogie and electro touches to their trademark horn arrangements and earthy analogue sound. the fruits are a-plenty and the group sound at their confident and versatile best from start to finish. opener “dog eat dog” powers in with mabinuori idowu and philippe lafreniÞre lambasting the powerful and the corrupt over an infectious afro-disco groove, “lufunki” takes the group right back to their b-boy roots, bringing the afro vibes to beat street and “is yeelyel” delivers a killer rework of an obscure original by somalian super-group dur-dur band.

during the mid-80s and early 90s movin’ records defined the new jersey sound. a skate-shop-turned-record-store run by the so-called “fairy godmother of house” abigail adams, movin’s first output was ‘i’ve got the music’ by boyd jarvis in 1987, followed by music from game changers blaze, kerri chandler, tony humphries and smack, straight up “jersey jams” that producers are still attempting to replicate to this day. still the movin’ records catalogue throws up gems that sound super fresh along with plenty of lightbulb moments of musical discovery.
for the most part movin’ records focused on soulful vocal tracks but they peppered a few deeper tracks into the catalogue too. this is one of those releases and one of the rarer titles to find from the label. produced by steve kelly and steve ‘lucky’ benson as 3 a.m., this was the only single under that group name, although they were involved in other productions from new jersey. deep chords, a heavy kick and a low-end bass form the backing for the repeated vocal line “i love this place”. the ‘place of worship’ mix brings an uplifting piano line to the forefront, whilst an organ line jams out through the track with a jazzy walking bassline holding the groove together.

commonly found lurking around l.i.e.s., technicolour and w.t. records, florian kupfer has plenty of credentials in the noisier end of the hardware house and techno scene, so it makes perfect sense to find him sidling up to valcron video in collaborative moder with torn hawk. the results are predictably excellent, from the gnarled emotional wrangles of -fake blood to the blown out ambience of hungry for candy. sweet tooth comes on like a dishevelled club workout, and then manipulation rounds the record off with a tongue in cheek spoken word and ambience piece that packs some serious music underneath the irreverent chit chat.

vinyl only! resista welcomes toby tobias to the family. toby has been behind plenty of widely regarded records over the past decade, putting his hand to a large number of releases for labels such as rekids, delusion of degradeur, more music, lats play house and more. needless to say, toby knows his way around the studio but hes also equally adet when it comes to cutting and splicing , as you can hear on the title track of this special 12 inch for resista re-editing and embelishing this slice of pure sunshine.

dubtraxx is new on the scene, as is their label rhythm n vibe, but don t let that lull you into a false sense of security this is seriously heavyweight gear. soundbwoy request is especially dangerous, working plenty of dub, reggae and jungle motifs into a rugged garage structure and sounding utterly ruff in the process. towards 99 is no slouch either, albeit on a slightly housier tip than the raucous a-side. the 2000 tribute mix of next millenium meanwhile sneaks out a few of the eerie tones you d expect to hear around the time that dubstep first started to emerge.

naoki e-jima s disc shop zero record store in tokyo holds a special place in our hearts. since before idle hands was even established, when rooted records was king, the cosy, liberally stocked shop has served as a sympathetic outpost for bristol s rich culture of soundsystem music. over the years, naoki has championed all the best music to come from our fair city, from smith & mighty through to pinch and pev and on to the output from our own humble label. it s been a vital connection to help our music reach the right heads on the other side of the world, in turn providing a platform for our most treasured artists to gig and further the cause of the music we love. as a thank you for all the support naoki has shown bristol music over the years, idle hands has put together a special tribute 10inch of tracks that chime with his particular musical tastes, shining a light on some complementary gems that might have otherwise never seen the light of day. its also a chance to fill in the missing idle013 catalogue number – fortunately, the number 13 does not represent bad luck in japanese culture. on the a-side, the mighty (pun intended) rob smith takes to a track from outboxx s debut album, originally intended for a remix 12inch that never came to be. in his learned hands, lost soul becomes a shimmering stepper marked out by beautiful cascading arpeggios and of course plenty of fulsome bass, with arresting fragments of vocal drifting in and out of the mix for good measure. rob s status as a true legend of bristol music needs no explanation, but his presence here is furthermore because naoki is such a fan of his music. on the b-side, atki2 makes a welcome return to the label after bringing a classic ray of sunshine to idle hands on the second single we ever put out. as well as being a big release for us, it was apparently huge at disc shop zero, so it feels right to bring the effervescent hes royal to this 10inch release. with a sunny disposition at heart, these two tracks make sense sharing a 10inch, but it s even more fitting that they sit side by side as we doff our caps to a true hero of the global underground. thanks, naoki.

the imprint of the french man lazare hoche returns with some super hot cuts
little is known about medicis, other than he last appeared back in 2015 on lazare hoche alongside voltery. on this, his second 12-, he strikes out on his own for the parisian deep house stable with some of that refined, head-tweaking groove fodder that has broadly defined the label since it started. -vilaroel- features shimmering tones that call to mind point g at his dubbiest, while -dissfreq- takes a sweeter route into dreamy pads and lightly shuffling drums. -carrier- is a darker, techier affair with plenty of hypnotic elements spinning in the mix, and then mdecisi old friend voltery lands a hand on the downtempo delights of -guda-.

from 4lux to ten thousand yen, earl jeffers has been serving up plenty of upfront good time house music over the past few years, as well as steering the equally on point chesus alias. now he sidles over to the new melange label with byron the aquarius in tow, and the sun kissed vibes are positively pouring out of the record grooves. eira is where byron flexes some on-point melodic input, laying down ludicrously rich keys to ramp up the soul status of this damn fine garage-y bumper. the demo mix of eira resides on the flip and shows off a more stripped down, raw version that s no less satisfying on the ears.

senso sounds collects together two of the key tracks from bossman oliver huntemann’s new propaganda album for this 12 inch release. senso has established itself as a key label in the techno scene and huntemanns ear for quality remains as sharp as ever. rotlicht is a precision-honed instrument of techno weaponry - hard as nails and featuring epic and mind-bending breakdowns. additionally the egyptian dj and producer raxon reworks the track into a deep and solid groover with plenty of attitude. ‘poltergeist’ is a journey into huntemann’s feel for sound design and space in a club context, beguiling with its seeming simplicity, before hitting home with shifting, evolving grooves and haunting synth blasts. the young russian maksim dark adds his own interpretation of poltergeist to the release, edging up the darkness a little more and producing a growling, tough techno workout that will go over big on a lot of floors this year.

key uk house player richy ahmed is next up on play it say it with a standout twotrack ep that proves just why he is such an essential talent. ahmed is currently in the headlines for his four thirty two label, which has put out some of his own great music and will a&r plenty from his peers in the future. it has also spawned a big party in ibiza at privilege, and has hosted events from glasgow’s sub club to leeds’ mint club. all this comes after years of richy headlining all over the world and working with labels like hot creations and crosstown rebels. now really into his stride as a producer, his latest is sure to rock floors worldwide. up first is the big and bombastic kimalaya with its tribal tinged and jumbled beats and big woodblock hits. wordless chants also join the groove, and the looseness of the whole thing is what will ensure it really gets the dancefloor going. add in diving bass notes and some clever breakdowns and you have a sure-fire recipe for success. just as infectious is come with us, a more nimble and peak time tune with lively synths darting and jumping about above techno leaning drums. its a freaky cut with inventive synth patterns that really get under your skin as it rumbles on. with these latest tracks richy ahmed once again offers up some truly fresh house perspectives

the crisp tech house machinations of constant sound continue apace with this excellent transmission from the ever rising michael james. -the story unfolds- leads the way with a set of slick and slender rhythms locked into a quintessential minimal house swing, with plenty of subtle micro sampling bubbling away between the beats. -vshl- has a chunkier disposition, using bolder percussive strokes that punch in unison with the wobbly synth lines. -perseid- is a trippy affair loaded with zippy effects and dubby effects, and then -h15- rounds the ep out with a resolutely deep 4/4 meditation

the owl returns for 003 after two sell-out opening releases. there is a bit more sample trickery on this release with beefed up drums and smooth chords added to the original material. the opening track being a clever disco-house take . the drums are chunkier and the groove is tight! donny hathaway s little ghetto boy gets more or the straight up edit treatment with all the good parts looped for a dj friendly mix. hustle is a very clever rework with plenty of new parts added to give the original a much needed dance floor boost. rounding the release off with a simple yet effective re-do of fred wesley s classic house party .

d marc cantu is a don when it comes to warm, rich synth-laden house and techno, with a sprinkling of electro sprinkled over his approach for good measure. now he comes to altered moods with an album that finds him in a particularly mellow mood, not least on sultry opener -always on my mind-. there s space for experimentation, as the offbeat snare patter of -blanket statement- demonstrates, but by and large this is all about undulating house delights. -mozaic- is a particular highlight with its captivating synth design and dreamy demeanour, while -steamfunk- revels in skippy broken beats that flirt with twinkling leads and lashings of delayed bass. plenty varied but consistent in tone, this is a damn fine album from a seasoned pro.

ian blevins has been busy making a name for himself on esp institute and futureboogie, but now he comes to not an animal with a slightly different approach that still speaks to the skills the upstart producer has in his sonic arsenal. -the birds- is a focused, steady-tracking cut for the deeper end of the night, but there s some serious weight in those drums and the heavily processed vocal snippets pack plenty of malaise. man power then step up with a -tropical bastard- remix of the original, cracking the curtains to allow a little light into the mix but stopping short of over-cooking the mood. -locate yourself- on the flip finds blevins in tracky techno mode, and it turns out it s a style he can nail just as easily as the more organic tones he s known for.

helena hauff s label continues to subvert all expectations by celebrating the truly underground and ignoring all expectations to provide obvious club material in line with her dj sets. instead we get treated to blood sport, a daring post punk band with a whiff of the pop group in their frenzied, messy style and plenty of sonic trickery occurring in between the intricate playing. -harsh realm- has the textural finish of earliest cabaret voltaire, but with a little more deft playing from the intensely talented players. -boiled in dust- meanwhile has a distinctly afrobeat-meets-industrial spirit that makes for striking, original material that should appeal to lovers of the truly alternative side of british music culture.

hamid s h+ (hpls) label continues to plough a furrow into the freakiest corners of the minimal scene, keeping the spirit of labels like telegraph and minibar alive with off-kilter beats, freaky sampling and wayward synth work from lesser known operators. g76 is up on the a side with the wonky wonders of -father-, packing some seriously squelchy monosynth bass and plenty of beat trickery to wriggle under the skin of the most deviant dancers. h+dk (hamid and denis kaznacheev) tackle the b-side with -tachtagol connection-, keeping the drums as slender as possible and using a sweet but subtle pad as the focus of the track. it s a simple approach, but utterly effective.

the third release on the emergent dreamtime label finds bobby bricks and miskotom sharing precious wax space with their own takes on laid back balearic house. bricks is up first, laying down a laid back house chugger propelled by fluttering synth lines that have spent time soaking up plenty of vitamin d. amazon blue does away with the drums for much of the tune, letting the new age synth tones do all the work before a mellow set of percussion comes loping in. miskotom has a more nocturnal feel at work on star master, but it s no less plush in its execution, while ad lucem ramps up fretless bass licks and plastic flute tones for another blissful excursion onto the astral plane.

green village is a label operating out of jersey city that deals in all manner of sounds from rugged house to scuffed up techno, but with a distinct bent towards broken rhythms and plenty of bass. this various artists 12- plies a diverse trade, with all tracks bound together by their ruffness. theft & toyc bring some loud and lurid bass synths to their snaking slice of oddball club music -atlantic-, while bd1982 places focus on dense layers of choppy drums and needlepoint acid arpeggios. eighth ruin delivers a truly head turning beat with the appropriately named -whip-, and then etch pays tribute to a classic movie with the excellent breakbeat science of -predator-.

primitive trust is the coming together of two experienced musical minds. in one corner is will saul of the influential aus music empire, and in the other is tom mangan, aka tee mango, the producer who started millionhands record and clothing label. the pair met many moons ago and reconnected recently at a festival in morocco. they bonded over music, lunch and shared family travails - and as they both now live in somerset decided a little local studio collaboration seemed all but essential. between them, these consumate country gentlemen have seen plenty a musical styles come and go, so decided their best route forward would be to make music to please themselves. to that end, they holed themselves up in tee mangos woodshed studio with the following ground rules: they would make music only with the gear they had (mpc 2000, ableton, roland 101, juno, fender rhodes, various fx pedals) they would trust their instincts and go with first feelings they would embrace the joy of randomness if in doubt they would ask what would carl do? with that, you have the simple but effective mo of primitive trust. these sessions have resulted in a series of three eps to be released over the course of four months. each ep will feature 2 or 3 original tracks and one fresh remix, with unique artwork and an illustration by all-around visual auteur geoff mcfetridge. using the building blocks of house, and classic techno primitive trust can do zoned out and romantic, as much as driving and heady, but with an ease that comes from experience, years in the making. while tipping their proverbial hats to the past they also look to the future with their sound, mixing samples, wigged out synthwork and propulsive rhythms to create something honest and heartfelt that will stand the test of time

ahead of a full-length album coming on glitterbox recordings, the king of disco re-edits dr packer presents four of his versions of soulful dancefloor favourites old and new, giving a flavour of what’s to come from the lp. different strokes kicks off with a re-rub of the mk-produced latrece i want to thank you, itself a house cover of alicia myers soul classic from 1981. dr packer pulls back on the tempo, making way for keyboards that echo the vocal melody and enhanced percussion. next, he remixes still in love by shuya okino, a contemporary nu-disco classic with gorgeous string instrumentation and a tight guitar riff. in true dr packer style, his version has plenty of extra funk, fleshing out the bassline to suit a dynamic disco set. a remix of atfcs bad habit is next, again given the effortlessly laidback, groove-laden dr packer treatment. finally its soul rebels ill be good, a vocal house classic from the mid-noughties, reinterpreted masterfully for todays glitterbox dancefloor

creme organization s latest missive comes from fabio monesi, an italian with a gritty house sound that is aimed squarely at the club. he s served up punchy beats on labels like russian torrent versions as well as his own wilson records before now and has a simple but effective sound. riot kicks us off with rock slid kicks and lithe synth stabs fleshing out the macho groove. clever vocal samples bring some steaminess and ensure this one will do plenty of damage on the floor. last friday is a raw and lo-fi affair with rattling, sharp edged hits and hissing synths all softened with jazzy chords. house drums and rolling bass prop it up in groovy fashion, then reduction is a frazzled brew of spiting hits, jerking machine grooves and busted frequencies that is as raw and tough as you like. last of all, the excellent ozyork rounds us out with punchy drum programming, intoxicating and off kilter chords and brain frying sonic imperfections that are perfectly imperfect. add in a deep acid line and you have a surefire house bomb with real meat in its bones.

never one to rest, our pal the revenge has been busy as always. his latest lp as 6th borough project find your rhythm recently dropped on roar groove, he created a beautifully delicate remix of auntie flos waiting for a (woman), had a change of scenery relocating from scotland to denmark and his collab ep with dirt crew, flush with nachtbraker remixes was one of our biggest records of 2016! amongst the action he’s taken the time and a more in yer face approach to write us his latest ep, a four-tracker of proper club tracks. every night brims with raucous disco energy. the french filter house reminiscent gems strings shimmer and funk horns hit heavy, a jam destined to wear holes in shoes. grit attends to the easy-going disco grooves we love so much from the revenge, plenty of shake and soul its overflowing with good-mood energy. b-side opener never learn gives us a glimpse of the darker end of the revenge’s spectrum. subby toms rumble, tweaked out synths bleep and slide and delayed key stabs shift the party into smoke hazed, underground rave mode. the closing track krokodille brings that bass n electro gritty booming sound! the acidic lead wraps around sturdy drums. straight forward with plenty of kick, what an ending to a high quality ep!

following releases on detroit underground, nachtstrom schallplatten, planet rhythm and blueprint records, gotshell releases his first ep on atrophic society. the colombian aficionado has been making waves across the world for his uncompromising take on the darker side of techno. his new ep ‘quarkcima’ is no different, with a thick slice of bass-heavy machine music made for late night body moving. ‘quarkcima’ follows a bleepy lead with layers of bass, building to a satisfying and tasteful crescendo, which steers clear of the tropes and uses frequencies to their fullest. it invokes a dark and foreboding atmosphere like a creeping black fog. first on remix duty is xhin, who takes the bleepy synth lead and twists it into a heavy-but-funky robotic jam, stark and cold on the surface but with plenty of heat underneath. jeff derringer takes the reins for the second remix, wielding the original parts masterfully into a dense, bassline-driven triplet groove that takes the vibe up a few notches. finally, label head vohkinne adds punch and percussion to his charged and clanging remix, which rounds out a fierce package in style. ‘quarkcima’ is four cuts of essential techno that will never leave your crate.

arvid whetman has plenty going for him at the moment. as sexazoid he s dropping all kinds of off-kilter machine beats on excellent labels like born free, while as your planet is next he builds on appearances on junk yard connections, waving hands, opal tapes, studio barnhus and klasse to deliver this chirpy four-tracker to acid waxa. from the twee vocals to the playful synths and straight up drums, this is club music crafted for an immediate hit. whetman makes this approach work magnificently though, liberally applying his musical personality to lo-fi deep house and roughshod acid, with heartbreaker being a firm favourite thanks to its fulsome 303 bassline and hooky vocal mantras.

lyon-based beatsmith ethyène has patented a certain style of mid-tempo house music applying a french touch aesthetic to disco, r&b and hip-hop sample references. through releases on longtime underground favorite kolour ltd and upstart labels like kyoku, as well as contributions to his own moonrise hill material, the frenchman has quickly built a sought after discography. his collaboration with better listen comes at an interesting time, as he seems to really be refining his sound, maturing sonically and honing the synthesis of the aforementioned influences to something nicely unique. the playin with fire ep is a deliciously bittersweet four track affair. the a1 slot sees e joining forces with his homie, the much acclaimed folamour, for the superlative why my love. meanwhile, loneliness of the shadow dancer- continues the r&b cream vibes, combining a classic head-nodding hip-hop flip with a soul chorus. the b-side gets a bit moodier, with the title track climatically building on hypnotically deep riffs and vocals and i sold yayo to buy kicks serving as the bob james-esque closer. the package is a cohesive reflection of a pensive and slightly anguished mindstate, with boom bap cultural influences and his familiar philadelphia streets functioning as the canvas. dont be surprised if this record serves as a point of stylistic elevation for the young producer, with plenty more of this new ammunition in the chamber. and you know the saying: if you play with fire, you might turn into a scorching hot phoenix.

j.a.k.a.m is japanese artist takashige miyawaki, a long standing producer commonly found on crosspoint records. on this release for the ever intriguing malka tuti label miyawaki draws on a thrilling spread of influences to make a truly soul-stirring track. at times the vocals lean towards a middle eastern lilt while the saxophone burns with the fire of the post punk era. with monolithic drum hits, yearning violin and plenty more besides, wabi sabi is a many-headed beast of a track. moscoman takes the original and simmers it down to a more focused but no less exotic tribal house workout.
