the best r&b songwriter and soul singer that most people have never heard of, sam dees has written songs for countless artists, including gladys knight, aretha franklin, whitney houston, george benson, the temptations, teddy pendergrass, millie jackson, jackie wilson, the manhattans, regina belle, kc & the sunshine band, willie clayton, and many others. he’s also a pretty fine singer, having recorded for the chess, atlantic, polydor, and sss labels, and he had a nice string of his own hits in the 1970s.
his 1975 atlantic album “the show must go on” has long been regarded by southern soul aficionados as one of the best of the genre. sounding a bit like a deeper-voiced curtis mayfield (in both style and theme), dees sings with assurance, wisdom, passion, and a whole lot of soul here. songs like “child of the streets”, “troubled child”, & “what’s it gonna be”, share mayfield’s commitment to social commentary, and dees knows his way around a love song, too.

as second release daphian launch the first chapter of a larger series of various artists named -shadow plays-. the meaning behind it s to build a record that mix different shades of sounds with house flow as common denominator, which is at the moment the soul of the label. moreover, the result is suitable for differents kinds of dancefloors. in the a side there are two tracks with dark and hypnotic textures, whereas the b side mark out enchanting and warmth sounds.

wild is the most complete musical work by nuage up to date. following a thought-out plan from beginning to finish, with a real introduction, development, and conclusion, the album is influenced foremost by the sun, sea and tropics. the music slowly evolves from warm and uplifting songs towards colder and more mysterious realms. . taking a full year to finish the album, including the entire change of season from summer to winter, memories of trips to mexico, the mountains, and the seaside fade away and are replaced by days at home and in the studio in cold st. petersburg. at the same time the music itself goes through a very personal development from outgoing moments to parts of personal reflection. without adding too much weight or philosophy to the music, the album is an easy and natural listening experience that explores contrasting and at times contradicting themes between summer and winter, cold and warm, introverted and extroverted and many layers in between, while also harmonizing the musical past, present and future of nuage.

this is the third record of the modern house quintet. this new one features one house/deep house track (a side) and a more “detroit-atmosphere” cut on the b-side. “belle-ile” opens with a filtered piano organ which responds to a massive bassline. the second part of the track introduces gradually a flute line, a trumpet sample and a layered pad.“fountain” starts with a pad which is progressively defiltered and quickly joined by a bassline. the break introduces an acid bassline, supported by a string chord. all these elements blend together to create a detroit atmospheric vibe.

formed by snow patrols gary lightbody as an outlet for his fascination with country music, tired pony began taking shape in may 2009. by october, the solo project had grown into a full-fledged supergroup featuring another snow patrol veteran, iain archer, his wife miriam kaufmann, producer/musician jacknife lee, belle & sebastian percussionist richard colburn, auxiliary r.e.m. member scott mccaughey, and troy stewart. peter buck joined several months later, and tired pony traveled to portland in early 2010 to record the debut album. featuring guest appearances by zooey deschanel, m. ward, and editors frontman tom smith, >the place we ran from< was finished in one week and released later that year.
