as tresor celebrates its 25th anniversary with this work of artists from the us, germany, china, france, austria, italy and the uk, it is worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed detroit techno – economic neglect and broken industry – were mirrored by the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification east berlin, where techno found new, vigorous expression.

thats desire/here we are ep is a 12inch vinyl and digital release by fragile, wolfgang tillmans evolving band project that spans from early recordings in 1986 with bert leßmann to a full band ensemble made up of a group of musicians in new york in 2016. the double a-side ep opens with thats desire, a collaboration with the new york rapper ash b. the song evokes associations with dfa, daf and a queer talking heads. in a spontaneous action ash b. takes over the mic and raps over tillmans heartfelt lyrics, originally written in 1985, combined with a funky bass line by thomas roach. the experiment results in a driving indie-dance sensation about the pleasure and pain of getting lost in ones own desire.

there’s much to be said for chance meetings. vitruvians – in their words, “a meeting of minds, cultures, styles and experiences, powered by music, and designed by faith” – owe their very existence to once such random encounter.
in the summer of 2014, producers frankie valentine and thomas “t-ash” sciurpa bumped into each other in a london shoe shop. over a fine selection of brogues and loafers, the conversation drifted onto music. the duo quickly realized they had much in common, and a plan began to form: they would get together and make music as vitruvians, using the alias as a vehicle for their collaborative work.

sydney based swede adam stromstedt returns for the second release on lyssna, which he co-runs with partners out of stockholm and amsterdam. he s previously done stuff on bristol s banoffee pies and local imprint junk yard connections, mr. tophat s label. his offering on the a side entitled -sinbad- is a dusty and hypnotic deep house jam, that will appeal to fans of thomas melchior or more recently rene audiard. on the flip, there s label co-owner flord king, who just so happens to be the aforementioned connection in amsterdam. his contribution -dapper- is another excursion in subtle trance induction with rolling bass, immaculately programmed rhythm and woozy pads for added effect.

next on version is a remix set by the legend that is benny ill of horsepower productions. on the a-side you will find a stunning techno steppers rendition of orson’s -rise 6-. check the b-side for orson & hops -dread drumz- getting benny’s unique jungle treatment. both sides are tried and tested in the dance and have been rinsed on radio by respected djs such as kode9 and n-type. version 006 - the benny ill remixes - is a true soundsystem weapon and will be a killer in any serious selector’s war box.
