nils frahm, born in 1982, had an early introduction to music. during his childhood he was taught to play piano by nahum brodski – a student of the last scholar of tschaikowski. it was through this that nils began to immerse himself in the styles of the classical pianists before him as well as contemporary composers. today nils frahm works as an accomplished composer and producer in berlin. in early 2008 he founded durton studio, where he has worked with peter broderick and dustin o’halloran amongst other fellow musicians.
the three instrumentals, which make up his debut release wintermusik are piano led pieces, coloured with occasional celeste and reed organ parts. the record’s equal measures of sorrowful refrains and uplifting passages, combined with a real intimacy that makes for an album you’ll want to return to again and again. the songs were originally intended as a christmas present for friends and family, hence its winter release on erased tapes. the vinyl release includes a download code.

célia regina cruz recorded four self-titled albums for continental between 1971 and 1977, ‘amor’ in 1982 plus several more before she sadly passed away late in 2017. célia was a brazilian vocalist who worked frequently with master arranger-composer arthur verocai in her early years and many other heavyweights over the course of her extensive career.. this, her second self-titled lp from 1972, features an all-star line up including arthur verocai, erasmo carlos, roberto carlos, marcos valle, antonio carlos jobim, nonato buzar and vinicius de moraes amongst others. célia’s version of ‘na boca do sol’ – taken from this album – is arguably her most well-known and well-loved song. an incredible take on verocai’s original, featuring waling fuzz guitars, strings, piano, horns and drums.

first official reissue of the extremely rare full-length album by lagos-based bandleader shina williams. clean copies of the original currently sell for up to £500. the record was born in 1979 when shina put biddy wright, fred fisher, saliu alabi, prince bola, tutu shoronmu, tunde willimas and several other decorated nigerian musicians – who played with the likes of fela kuti, sjob movement, sonny okoson, king bucknor amongst others – together to record. the result is ‘african dances’, a timeless fusion of afrobeat, electronics, boogie and disco. includes his most well-known song, ‘agboju logun’ that williams knew was ground breaking – “i want to show the whole wide world that africa is alive with modern musicians to reckon with anywhere,”. this album version is a different mix to the two-track 12” that came out under on earthworks, rough trade in 1984. official mr bongo reissue. replica original artwork. licensed direct from shina williams.

with »redsuperstructure«, robert lippok created a new foundation for his musical endeavors. now – 7 years later – this system properly comes to life on »applied autonomy«. the title of the new album is a clear indicator as to what the berlin-based producer has been up to during the last couple of years, both on a conceptual level as well as how he molds his ideas into tracks. »applied autonomy« orchestrates a certain state of frantic standstill, which occurs once a structure is set. has this state been reached, the artist is free to focus on other equally important aspects, balancing the various shades, pushing ideas even further to really make them shine and blossom in their self-declared autonomy. the more light one lets in, the more layers become visible. layers are key when it comes to understanding »applied autonomy«. big chunks of the material with which the album has been produced derive from sketches specifically made for a club performance. rather than meticulously devising each and every detail, lippok focussed instead on recording as many fragments as possible in a short period of time, elements which he could later combine and layer on stage. based on this material and his experience experimenting with it in a live environment, the album slowly began to shape. an album culminating in a collaboration with klara lewis, with whom lippok spent 2 days at the ems studios in stockholm, approaching the idea of autonomy from yet another angle. during the session, both musicians played and performed simultaneously, yet not explicitly together, lost in their own thoughts and ideas, only subconsciously taking in what the other one was coming up with. the result is »samtal«, 14 minutes of a constantly evolving state of poise, magically connecting all the dots lippok had already defined as »applied autonomy«. the artwork for »applied autonomy« has been created by the berlin-based argentinian artist luca gutierrez. over the last couple of years, he has made a name for himself with his spectacular av performances.

in our most private moments, we have often thought of multi culti as an educational enterprise: as you listen to our music and stare at our artwork, you are absorbing information in a way that might conceivably be defined as -learning.- our latest release brings this theoretically reasonable fantasy one step closer to fruition, as we welcome hamburg-based musician and composer andi otto (ph.d) to our roster of artists. a deep listening experience focused on repetition and timbre, bow wave was made using rare and unique instruments such as a special sensor bow for cello (and other string instruments) known as the -fello,- which otto developed during his residencies at the steim research centre in amsterdam. the album also features vocals from award-winning indian playback singer, actor, and tv anchor m.d. pallavi, a frequent otto collaborator, recorded while the two were touring japan. the digital edition of bow wave includes 10 tracks, while the six-track vinyl adds remixes by ecuadorian folklorica wizard nicola cruz and parisian adult disco purveyor golden bug, both of which will be released separately in a digital remix pack alongside reworks from brazil s ricardo vincenzo and norway s center of the universe. you are free to purchase all of them.

recorded in philadelphia in 1969, the deirdre wilson tabac’s sole album is a beautiful blend of funk, jazz and soulful pop. possessing the complex grooves, thrilling breaks and ethereal weirdness that the rotary connection pedalled so brilliantly, the lp failed to connect with audiences upon its original release.
in the decades since, it has deservedly attracted a considerable cult following. however, almost inevitably, it has become increasingly tricky to pick up a copy in good condition for anything less than eye-watering sums. as such, we’re delighted to present the first officially licensed vinyl reissue of this undoubted masterpiece of freaky funk-rock, limited to just 500 copies.

danny mclewin (psychemagik) and jamie cruisey have a new label of original signed artists called spirits. the first release is from mexican hotness lokier of she made monster and jason greer aka the machine, one of the californian undergrounds best kept secrets. they met in 2015 at a festival in london and after spending a few days together, became musically obsessed with each other. that summer, as jason bounced around europe, he stayed with lokier in barcelona for some weeks and after long night walks, some tapas and absinthe bars they came up with their first ep together.

lithuanian based label sodai started its journey in 2016, making it a label still in its infancy but making a big impression. owned by artist gardens of god, who started the label to create his own no limits platform for his experimental sounds and projects. while at the same time a platform to give other artists the chance to also have freedom with art and music. with releases from raxon, few nolder and alex krell under their belt, they can announce the exciting debut from uk producer third son this april. ive been an admirer of gardens of gods music for a long time, when he asked me if i could do something for his imprint, i was more than thrilled! adds joseph. syncopes synths spread far and wide, making this a journey of a track, modulating and panning in and out, pushing and pulling along a percussive drive. his broad musical range can be felt in this mix, with its slightly hypnotic tones. irony has a punctuated low end, which creates a deep and dark groove. the synthetic elements in this track gain in attitude, on top of ambient pads, leading nicely into bach to close out the release. its driving and determined bass makes the backbone of the track, with a modulating hook line, along building and expanding frequency ranges. the whole package makes for a very strong first release from third son, and sodai are excited to be welcoming him to the family.

it was vladimir ivkovic who introduced me to the world of rex ilusivii. a world where the spirit of a genius holds sway. i remember spending an entire night at vladimir s house in germany, listening to all those recovered pieces, and feeling like i had entered another space-time. mitar tragically left us, one november night in 1999 in brazil, leaving behind an extensive body of work consisting of more than 500 pieces, for the most part never released. being submerged in such a unique universe, so singular, brought me happiness. it also filled me with hope, because i tell myself that today there must be many other outstanding musicians who produce in the shadow of the traditional circuit, just for the pleasure of making music. listening to the music of mitar suboti&#263,, makes you part of his world. he did not stop producing from 1983 to 1999, in different styles, but with an instantly recognizable touch.his music also marries the evolution of recording techniques with new instruments that have appeared over this time, from the tr808 to the digital samplers. it took me more than two years to select the music for this record, as each time i listened to the material it revealed other details and other possibilities. i am extremely happy and honored to present this record to you, in which i try to do justice to the different, versatile- facets of suba.

field of dreams are field theorys chris kentish and dj al mackenzie. field theory have recently had tracks on respected labels such as futureboogie and secret life gaining rave reviews and even garnering plays on bbc radio 6 music. al has been a dj since the late 80s, now resident at birminghams great outdoors. he s made numerous records over the years but will probably be remembered primarily for his 90s band d:ream making number one all over the world and remixing for emf and duran duran amongst others. bumping into each other in the street one dayand realising they lived opposite each other, they seized upon the chance to combine their favourite passions, making music and drinking.

it s time for a fresh new release from the apollonia stable, and this time around we unveil four groovy gems from shonky and tolga fidan working together for the first time, giving us a winning combination and one which is sure to satisfy fans of both artists. the first track dynamo sets the tone for the ep, the bassline has a deadly groove, while playful effects dance around at the top end creating an immersive atmosphere. intergalactic vibes. after that comes bastille , which features a similarly jaunty rhythm with a variety of bleeps, chirps and twangs layered on top on each other to give the track its depth and character, while a menacing b-line does its dirty work in the low end.on the flip we get micro-ondes , a mysterious into the undiscovered lands of planet funk. you feel as though you ve been transported to another world, where warped creatures lurk, calling out for your attention. as for the bass, its rhythm is utterly contagious. finally americana completes the collection, maintaining the unusual use of sound prevalent throughout the ep it utilises a myriad distorted instruments. support in the low end comes via a tough, punchy bass riff.

unità psicofisica isn’t just an ordinary label, it is the coming together of passionate and inspired artists. with the aim of gathering young and rising artists, the label unites various forms of art, from producers and photographers to illustrators and video makers. the purpose is to create a platform where artists can express true emotion and creativity by concocting an artistic “unity”, mainly focused on generating a new form of art by combining music and all sorts of art.
the first act of the label - assioma - was created by the founder and owner manent, the release contains two of his original tracks and two remixed versions. the first remix was composed by the spanish refracted, the other from the italian mod21.

for phonicas landmark 20th release on the main label we go back to a classic from the same year the shop opened stereofuses casino ep, originally released on berlin label salo in 2003. the casino ep marked the first collaboration between martin wörner & thorsten diegel as stereofuse. they followed it up with a string of other 12inches for other labels but its this initial 12inch that has been fetching high prices second-hand as one of the most sought after releases on salo and for very good reason. a timeless ep sitting somewhere between house and techno (before tech-house became a disputed tag-line!) with the likes of ricardo villalobos & craig richards playing it regularly in their sets.

the artist run gallery schloss, inhabiting the space of a defunct porsche repair shop in oslo, has birthed a record label under the same name. run by the visual artist ida ekblad and the dj/ producer karima furuseth. the first release is by londoner max fowler,who has a certain affinity for ageing samplers and dusty samples.the b-side features a remix by stockholm mainstay and, among other, the trilogy tapes-affiliate samo dj. mixed and mastered by matt karmil.

transit valley is the debut release by joe coghill, a multi-disciplinary artist, musician and experimental publisher based in edinburgh. his practice incorporates sound, video, performance, social sculpture, facilitation and media distribution. borrowing from multiple spheres of influence, his scattered output operates from a liminal position. coghill works in an improvised and often haphazard way, incorporating disparate field recordings, modular synthesis and other sonic ambiences to create unpredictable and ephemeral multi-layer audio-visual performances. alongside this coghill has been producing music recreationally in his various bedroom studios over the past 14 years

mihai popescu kicks off a new label, steppin motion records, with two of his own brilliant tracks. the romanian artist has been a key part of the scene since 2012, releasing on labels like soulsity, rora and bass culture. he has a slick electronic sound that is here for all to here on these two new cuts.

steppin motion is a record label based in paris and managed by swoop. it aims to promote music as an art, as something beautiful that gets your body and soul in motion. this first ep is in two parts, showcasing both sides of the label: the first part is the most dance oriented, whereas the second part will be more soul / beauty oriented. the amazing artwork comes from vesod, who is an italian street-artist painter from turin.

selfsuficient is first and is ten minutes of slippery house music with lovely chords and melodies all making for a warm and infectious groove. it is colourful, loose and rhythmic stuff that oozes a futuristic sense of soul. neasteptat is deeper, with rubbery drums and woodpecker like sounds all weaving round each other to cast a spell on those who hear it.

these are two terrific tracks that connoisseurs of minimal house are going to lap up.

joseph white aka joe white is a foundation of jamaican music. he started singing in the late 50 s and did his first recordings for duke reid in the early 60 s. while disco sound was bumping into jamaican people mind, he formed the group roots, trunks & branches to release several tracks on the label splendour heights. “rising / power disco power” is taken from the album the weak will be strong released in 1978. a beautiful extended disco reggae tune mainly played by joe white (drums, piano, vocal). this issue was fully remastered on a disco 45 vinyl record to give respect to the dynamic. on the other side you will get the reggae lovers roots rock tune “ain t no way / the monster”, an extended version with deep dubwise. you ve got it!

following afrobeat makers vol.1 (sold out), comet is pleased to announce the second volume of the afrobeat makers collection, due for release in june this year: the tony allen’ original afrobeat patterns revisited by few of the best international dj/producers, with among them: doctor l (paris), thiago franca (sao paulo), mps pilot (amsterdam), or gnowee (paris) tony allen has spread afrobeat to the corners of the globe, a perfect synthesis of tradition and sophistication – his various collaborations with great artists from all genres and styles are a truly proof of his openness. doctor l, paris based music producer, is a sound activist going through the musical galaxies, fusioning from 80’s punk rock, to hip-hop, electronica and afrobeat ... in 2000, already on comet records, he brought lagos afrobeat towards the third millennium with the album black voices by tony allen, and even send it to the moon, with his other project, psyco on da bus. since 2002, dj/producer mps pilot (nl) has immersed himself in the cutting-edge tropical bass scene. in every possible direction and slippage between all different genres, mps pilot maps the crosspollination and divergence of contemporary music. he performed on 3 continents, both in remote desert or major festivals. thiago franca is a producer, musician and saxophonist from são paulo arts scene, this year with his power afro-punk trio meta meta, they released for the first time in europe (mais um discos -uk), their debut album metal metal. thiago is meanwhile developping his african rooted solo outfit, sambanzo, and was also in criolo’s touring band for two years, where he met tony allen, which led to two collaborations on the the afrobeat makers and meta meta’ albums.

for the third volume of compilations curated by confirmed crate diggers, spacetalk invites you to take a trip to the magical mediterranean resort of club meduse in the company of beachfreaks records co-founder charles bals.
a creative director, designer and curator by trade, bals spends the majority of his spare time searching for superb, unknown, small-run music releases made between the 1970s and 1990s. while some of these are made available for other enthusiasts to buy via beachfreaks’ mail-order service, many more make it into the racks of bals’ private collection. with club meduse, bals is sharing rare, hard-to-find and just plain brilliant gems from his personal stash for the very first time.
for club meduse, bals was inspired by countless magic childhood summers spent playing amongst the rocks, beaches and warm seas of the cote d’azur. the compilation, then, is a soundtrack to the greatest soft-focus, sunlit teenage summer holiday you’ve never had, with a gaggle of forgotten musicians and overlooked artists for company.

after the release of brazilian disco boogie sounds (fvr098), favorite recordings follows-up, this time focusing on its homeland language. helped by a close connoisseur friend, dj and collector charles maurice presents a fine selection of what he thinks represent best the amazing energy of this specific movement and period. with 10 rare titles, all produced between 1975 and 1984, he shows a perfect picture of what you could find in french record stores at that time, on one hand, tracks by overdrive, marché noir, didier makaga or france-lise, were produced by underground artists and labels from the french caribbean and african community and also filled with the raw spirit of this tropical stamping. on the other hand, tracks by beckie bell, kelly, le club, or bernard guyvan, were released by major labels such as trëma, carrere, disques vogue, or pathé marconi, thanks to confirmed independent producers, acting not only in france, but also in canada and the us. today, favorite recordings and charles maurice are very proud to shed some light again on these gems, and hopefully offer them a new life on your turntable

we are happy to welcome two new artists to rose records on our first real split record. rose 12 brings two pieces from chassé. the duo from belgium adds round bass and piano to send two deep and warm tracks into the game. on the other side, which is rose 13, you find two more crazy tracks which unite funky vocals with guitars – both from gledd a recent nice and surprising discovery for us from italy. we feel that the combination of both sides represent rose perfectly – a deep and funky mix.

marseille-based producer grant returns to his self-released white label series with an ever more expansive ep of deep, rolling house. with a firm grasp for 80’s chicago and detroit house tased with 90’s deep house tropes, grant004 finds him on deepest ever form, with swirling luscious pads, snippet vocals and thudding percussion sinking us further down into the depths.

next up on baum is no other than mike schommer of deepchord fame who is back after a 15 year break, with a three track ep. his first release after his break was out on steve o sullivans mosaic records, and now his second one is released on baum records. mike s sound does not need any introduction, the music speaks for it self, but one thing to say, dub techno does not get any better than this!

farron gets back on shaw cuts with his fourth record, invincible shaolin a tale of double-dealing, rivalry, royalty and bad blood. manchu general pus evil quest to eradicate the shaolin tradition unfolds, cunningly pitting north and south shaolins against each other. spring break ya neck opens the clash with its rhythmic shifts and whirling synth pads. the northern masters prevail. after pus henchmen secretly kill the southern shaolin, the general blames the masters from the north, unleashing chaos. cosmicaph restores order, its pounding drums and floating melodies giving new strength to the southern shaolin. revenge must be taken. to prepare for conquer, the southern master sends three of his disciples to three masters to learn their secret weapons. sir hatch sets the pace with rolling punches, dirty synths and sharp percussion as the three disciples transform into lethal fighting machines. just before the final encounter between the shaolin, leibniz lands on the scene with his fresh interpretation of spring break ya neck, revealing to both schools that they have been deceived. joining forces, north and south battle the general and his men, led by leibnizs funky drum patterns and turbulent synth action. and the shaolin spirit lives on
