of course the acid rebirth is the masterpiece here, in a sense. a bloody good reprise, totally replayed with hardware of the rebirth from jones and stenfenson on bonzai. finishing on a big frustration: still some work for the dj! but also with the interstellar delivery, mr gasmask brings a superb techno trance tune. at least afx fans will enjoy the last tune, the arboria tribute:a superb acid broken stuff, in the pure oldschool tradition of this owesome style. 200 copy limited!

remastered reissue featuring three fantastic hard-to-find classic rump shakers from hamilton bohannon. bohannon was one of the key forces in disco in the seventies and this is him at his best - his instantly recognisable sound is pure uncut boogie mixing riffing guitars, bad-ass funky bass and pounding drum tracks. first up is the super-rare long 12 inch version of me & the gang a superbly funky track popular with everyone from tony humphries to carl craig with its great chunky beats & a killer piano groove later sampled by paul johnson for his hit get get down, followed by the groove i feel - a monstrously good floor-filling gem unearthed from his 76 album dance your ass off. on the flip you get the awesome full 12:45 minute version of maybe you can dance another slamming disco-funk stomper only ever available as an elusive 1977 12 inch promo. quality stuff!

a yawning desert covers and oppresses a distant daemon-sphere pregnant with the stuff of a thousand earths. clouds of the same hue and attitude as the infinite sands gradually dominate the sky, possessed of a malign intelligence. a trans-generational caravan cuts an unforgiving line through the dunes in a fruitless mission to close its great mad circle, forever missing by just miles. it is a roving, innumerable harem in liege to an unsexed tyrant who sings them this song, reproduced here by resonant hole emissaries jeanne vomit-terror and ed sunspot, as the caravan commits the abominable act of transgressing the horizon into the infant sky-desert “above.” carl calm’s “gulf of night” mix is a monster, as is the great mike simonetti’s perverse interpretation!

another round of wonderful eclectic delights from balearica. side a features the in demand *tonys song* by tony g. originally released back in 88, this floorfilling electro-tinged house classic features an incredibly catchy piano riff, phat bassline and some spoken vocals taken from al pacinos *scarface*. a massive hit both at amnesia in ibiza as well as at manchesters hacienda and at the early acid house parties, this track still sounds super fresh. next up is the dope vocoder-laden groove of escape from new yorks *slow beat* - a brilliant balearic chugger that features high on many most-wanted lists. on the flipside, we get the much desired slo-mo disco of steve benders *the final thing* - a moog-heavy groover that hit big at both the balearic parties and on italys cosmic scene. then finally, to round off this great compilation is the extended instrumental version of bowie & methanys *this is not america* - a favourite of everyone from alfredo to theo parrish. quality stuff!

the e.p kicks off with she can dance, a slow burning acid number that has elements of deep, grooving house from the detroit school. in fact, the second cut low control bares the influence of detroit too, with its murky, dubbed-out chords ala luke hess moving into a punchy bassline with minimal but functional drum patterns. proceedings get a bit more bouncy on the smoking hat, a quirky acid romp on the less daft side of ceephax, and the perfect soundtrack to accompany a feature-length documentary about.... a smoking hat. finishing up the e.p is fudge fingas remix of low control, the only man qualified to make an already deep as fuck track even deeper. theres been some on-point criticisms about a lot recent deep stuff getting lost in noodly jazz territory, but we are in no danger of that nonsense with fudge fingas at the controls: accomplished a musician he may be, hes never been one to lose the way, and this mix proves his deft and subtle remix talents. dabj done done it again, and hopefully this is the first in a long line of productions from vernon.

john heckle (undisputed king of da real scouse house and fast becoming one of the most prolific young techno producers from the uk) deviates ever so slighty from his trademark sound to paddle his little raft down the mersey and run wild with the wolves. the result is epic and mystic (and 100% organic) and opens a doorway into a mythical world of wicker men, hill figures, druids, witch covens and early 90s sunrises off the m25, when ever-e-thing seemed possible. excellent new artwork as well by godspill, who is also into naked chicks that float and stuff. a deadly combination!

in their own words, like a radio-controlled mechanical, electro-mechanical and multifunctional musical instrument, berliner ring build up relentless and relentlessly different grooves in a characteristically non-direct way. as if playing around without focus they layer their tracks and slowly position them into form. the tracks featured here were originally released on cd on the art yard label. melodies are fragmented, often even sparse, the groove never stops, but does so with intervals and while changing focus. berliner ring references similar bands in the krautrock and post-rock genre, but it s subtlety, the originality of their self-built instruments and their songs that shift from downright groovy to more atmospheric explorations of ambience and texture guarantee them a unique voice and perspective. essential stuff.

dj nature aka milo steps uponce again to the indispensable golf channel label, with his eagerly awaited debut artist album comprising all original material. a founding member of legendary bristol sound-system collective the wild bunch (which spawned massive attack, tricky and much more), nature made nyc his home in the early 90s & went on to collaborate with the major force crew in japan, before hooking up with gc boss phil south, who thankfully persuaded him to don his production cap once again. there followed a series of acclaimed 12 inch releases through gc which developed a trademark sound, a sound he’s fully realised on >return of the savage<. natures unique take on modern black music is somewhere between the bass heavy sound system cuts on which he cut his teeth and the more nuanced vibe of peers like theo parrish. irresistible, low slung and beautifully structured yet raw club pieces make up this outstanding selection - a superbly packaged gatefold double lp, complete with download codes for individual tracks as well as the mixed version.

this release again shows the early house mastery of elbee bad as well as his diversity. the keith, kat & blondie shows his deep, eerie side, his freestyle vibe on the wizard & the prince track (which became an early uk warehouse/breakbeat hit) and his hip hop roots on the lord kcb track.
again, a fine example of the formative years of nyc house music. unmissable!

edux return from a winter hibernation and summer of partying with some more essential wax. machete savane is their latest signing, aka studio supremo saul richards & andy bainbridge, an integral part on well respected and notoriously raucous party people bad passion andy has perfectly distilled what drives the bad passion dancefloor in the excellent >elysian fields<, and who better to put a unique stamp on the track than their main resident guest felix dickinson. he takes the track into bolder, dubbed out and altogether more acid house territory, while keeping the live elements to the fore. finally mid op amps up the drum machinery, and lays out another corking balearic with balls workout. quality stuff as always.

this is n eight track release series built of four remixes and its previously released originals now in form of a re-issue to complete the series. successful tracks like lufts >in high spirits< or even more secret gems like livu grozas no love are brought back on stage by being amazingly remixed by other raoul artists or friends of the label. the first edition features remixes and originals from: luft, crowdpleaser, liviu groza, digitaline, emilie nana and dollar mambo. the vinyl edition includes only the new remixes.

for signal life #03, we teamed up two young vigorous south londoners: mr. louis carnell, known by his moniker visionist, and mr. marco giuliani, who works under the alias last japan. >control this< by visionist combines his background in south london grime with his signature drum machine template and lo-fi vocal excerpts into a coherent mesh. our favourite visionist track to date! when we first heard >storm trooper< by last japan, it was the tension we got caught up in. the song is focused with a clear direction, uncommon in most young talent, armed with a driving snare-fill rhythm reminiscent of south rap and all that exiting stuff in the 160 bpm. i believe murky is the correct term. we predict interesting things for mr. giuliani.

the black madonna hits home taping hard with her first release on the label >alright this morning<. coming from the middle of nowhere, but now based in the attic of a house in chicago that used to be the home of over 50 dance labels, she likes her music to do the talking and admires the anonymity and musical militancy of acts like underground resistance. having being brought up working in the music industry as an apprentice doing this, that and everything and helping to run labels, she actually refused to let anyone hear her work for years with masters gathering dust and never seeing the light of day. until now when, after the encouragement of a producer friend to get her stuff out there and a chance find by home taping of a few tracks online one day, she has now found a place where she feels at home. the first of a string of releases on home taping sees the jubilant and heavily chicago-influenced >alright this morning< released along with a remix by one of her favourite new producers, nicholas from italy. the rest is history and up to you ...
