the remarkable second album, “indigo”, from singer and pianist kandace springs is a 13-track lp of originals and choice covers that showcases the full breadth of kandace’s artistry from smoldering r&b (“piece of me”) to gorgeous jazz ballads (“unsophisticated” featuring roy hargrove) to the pop songcraft of “breakdown” and “don’t need the real thing,” the album’s lead single which is out today. all but two tracks are produced by drummer/producer karriem riggins (common, erykah badu) with additional production by jamie hartman (rag n bone man), jimmy hogarth (amy winehouse, corinne bailey rae), jimmy harry (madonna, p!nk) and evan rogers and carl sturken (rihanna).
lock yourself into the beat, but don’t become prisoner to it. the techno pioneer jeff mills understands that only too well. in his quest to liberate himself from the tyranny of the sequencer, mills couldn’t wish for a better partner than the father of afrobeat.

blue note is pleased to announce the release of legendary nigerian drummer tony allens new ep, a tribute to art blakey and the jazz messengers. the 4 titles featured in the ep moanin, the drum thunder suite, night in tunisia, politely provide a preview of his forthcoming first album for blue note (currently scheduled for release in autumn 2017) on which tony allen pays tribute to his longstanding idol, american jazz drummer art blakey.the ep s four titles and the other tracks that make up the album were recorded over three days in paris at the midilive studios, the former facility of the vogue label. the sessions were done in live conditions that saw tony allen and his 8-piece band together in the same room, with the sound channelled through 12 separate mikes onto 2-tape via a sony mci-jh24 analogue multi-track recorder.
josé james is reborn as a powerful voice in contemporary r&b on “love in a time of madness”. even for an artist as creatively restless as james, “love in a time of madness” is something new: an r&b focused foray into moody soul, electronic pop, and trap-addled beats, with the occasional influence of african folk, american gospel and minneapolitan funk. and though james’ voice is no less agile and his ear no less adventurous, this is also his most relatable, daresay sexiest work yet, detailing love’s ups and downs without holding back an ounce of emotion.
as we welcome another talented artist to our family we asked viken about the first part of a two part release and he told us it s really important to understand that this ep is a series of pictures telling a story. combining the names of all the tracks one gets this interesting and dreamy sentence, on a blue road a white shadow feels the winter. to translate these pictures into music, i needed a very particular sound. since i am a huge fan of jazz music i took one of my favorite records, used a lot of samples and reworked them in my own way. from the technical aspect, i decided to reconnect with my first love: analog machines. i love working with sound textures. i stayed away from my laptop and all my vst/plugins as i felt the need to compose these tracks in an unusual way: i wanted the sound to be really pure. that s the reason why this process was so essential for me. for me, this ep is the first one to sound like this. this is the first of two releases from a deeply talented soul. a patient collage of house, jazz, acid squiggles and deep emotion. played and loved all summer long by lee burridge at all day i dream, these tracks will stay with you through winter and into next summer.
norah jones has come full circle with day breaks, her remarkable sixth album which finds her returning to her jazz roots while also proving her to be this era’s quintessential american artist, the purveyor of an unmistakably unique sound that weaves together the threads of several bedrock styles of american music: country, folk, rock, soul, jazz. day breaks is a kindred spirit to come away with me, though it is unquestionably the work of a mature artist who has lived life and grown immensely in her craft. the album features jazz luminaries including shorter, smith, and blade, who played drums on norah’s debut and became the backbone (and backbeat) of the new album.
the vinyl lp comes in a gefold sleeve with download code included.

not too late is norah jones highly anticipated third album. made up of 13 songs - all of which were written or co written by norah - the album was produced by lee alexander, norahs long time song writing partner/bass player. the album features distinct traces of dusty in memphis style southern soul, as well as the kind of sleepy, sultry vocals that have been ubiquitous in coffee houses all over the world since the release of her 20+ million selling 2002 debut album, come away with me.
