peter croce has been making some noise lately with his rocksteady disco party and record label, and here he brings his burgeoning rework sensibilities to rnt with a varied pack of revisions straight from detroit! on the ecstatic uptempo face-melting tip, we have spirit dance and get up and boogie, either of which are sure to burn down any disco. then there s the hard-working, grown-ass groove of proletariat blues, and made in china, a beautiful slow-burner for those early evening spins or late-night comedowns.

along with his rival, cornell campbell, johnny clarke was one of the most esteemed singers of the roots reggae era. having grown up next door to a popular sound system on waltham park road in western kingston, clarke s early fascination with music led him to hang out at studio one with jacob miller while still at school. he then made the rounds of talent shows with barry brown, sugar minott and the diamonds, which led to a debut recording in 1973, for the pianist glen stair, which remains unreleased. an early effort for clancy eccles, ‘god made the sea and sun,’ was not promoted properly, though ‘everyday wondering,’ for rupie edwards, impacted in britain, ‘golden snake’ for stamma houghton and a cover of smokey robinson’s ‘you really got a hold on me’ for glen brown were also false starts. the breakthrough finally came in 1975 when clarke linked with bunny lee, who had him voice the rastafari landmark ‘none shall escape the judgement’ (written by earl zero, who failed to muster a credible take), which kick-started the ‘flying cymbal’ craze. clarke’s resultant debut album, enter into his gates with praise, mixed hard-hitting rastafari devotional material with sympathetic cover versions of classics by the likes of the paragons, slim smith and delroy wilson, along with a few reggae renditions of some vintage american r&b.

new band name, new lp, the former max graef band toured and worked on new music all year. musical progress, and the impression of not enough edge and rawness in a lot of recent music, inspired and motivated a majority of the recording. the band has grown as a unit and wrote a lot of material together this year in late night sessions. during 2 weeks of recording the new songs in the studio the goal was to try all sorts of instruments, amps and effects and be open to any combination of sounds. furthermore, they and engineer lutz fahrenkrog-petersen tried to capture and maintain the raw feeling of the live recordings using almost exclusively analog pedals and racks as well as keeping the editing of the recordings to a minimum. although bands like et cetera (wolfgang dauner), embryo or xhol have heavily infuenced max graef and his band, the result turned out very original ranging from distorted jazz-rock to experimental soul, electronic percussion workouts to free sound experiments and psychedelic rock. with some tracks being around 14 minutes long, it is better to let the music speak for itself though.

reaching our 100th release seems surreal. i started it with 50 bucks and a defiant attitude to release music i felt wasn’t repped elsewhere. the label has grown into a renegade family, and worldwide techno brand. proud of every single achievement and mistake we have made, we felt it fitting to gather a selection of our favorite artists and showcase our vision on the current state of classic modern techno. here s to another 10000. octopus for life.

adam port and jimpster have had a special kind of ‘virtual’ relationship the last few years with a mutual respect for each others productions and output of their respective labels. keinemusik, which adam runs alongside rampa, &me and reznik, has grown into one of the most consistent and hottest out there right now with every release creating a big splash and bringing magic to so many dancefloors around the world. adam recently remixed jimpster’s eel pie island to devastating effect bringing his own deep, late night atmospherics to the original and creating one of 2016’s underground hits in the process. so now we’re very pleased to welcome adam port (alongside legendary uk artists stereo mc’s) for a full release on freerange in the form of changes. opening the release we have adam’s own remix which sets the tone with a subtle and gently building groove providing the perfect backdrop for the stereo mc’s esoteric vocal. this lesson in restraint shows why adam’s productions work so well on big systems, letting all the focus shine firmly on the vocal creating an intense atmosphere with not a single huge breakdown in sight! next up we have the original of changes which takes a more electro approach with a simple bassline and crisp hats and once again allowing the vocal space to take centre stage for a deep and memorable track with a message. finally we have a remix from our own jimpster opts to push in a completely different direction. shuffling up the groove and laying down a repeating rhodes riff we’re treated to an altogether more soulful and less stark version making the perfect compliment to the the package. this one makes us think of his remix of osunlade’s momma’s groove which is no bad thing we feel! enjoy!

the pathway traxx journey continues! following the storming success of the killer pt06 from dj w!ld we welcome a stomping, home grown, 4 track ep from the pathway label owner niko maxen. this ep has been over 3 years in the making, since the early days of pt01 when niko produced the original tracks for the label. it has been an intention to follow that release with a solo ep, and that time has now come. true to form, niko’s ep delivers a hard dose of raw house, seductive vocals, slamming kick drums, and skippy hats.
2017 is set to be a big year for niko as he lines us several big releases and another 4 track vinyl ep all in the early half of the year. it seems now is the perfect time for this in-form artist to come out from the shadows and into the limelight.

silvia trix is a dj-producer grown up in rome s underground scene, beginning her professional career in spring 2007.

with this ep best works records would like to pre-sent a new artist - luis junior. no stranger to the game! madrid-based luis junior has been a dj and music producer for more than 20 years. in 1993 he re-leased his first 12-inches starting to build a disco-graphy of genre-defying music that pushes forever forward, designing new stylistic frameworks and breaking new artistic ground with each successive production. luis has grown into one of the most cut-ting edge and inspiring artists in spanish electronic music. his versatile production skills are clearly displayed here from soulful and folkloristic influences to techno. the first track on the ep “don’t give up on me” fea-tures singer sobi thurairatnam with sultry vocals and a stong pop-appeal. d-nox and beckers tranform it into a club burner for the early hours. floidos on the back-side is more of techno-orientated banger and with pasion luis junior manages to integrate some spanish flamenco sounds without getting to obvious.

vinyl only , the inaugural release comes from sandro kuhne, resident and owner of sbz and sbr, he provides two cuts for the genetic impression ep, two tech house grooves, subtle in their arrangement but powerful in the low end, effective dance floor movers. providing the remix is romanian duo livio & roby, who need little introduction and deliver a solid mix, true to their name. sunday breakfast records: sunday breakfast zurich has firmly established its name as a recognised clubbing event in the european house and techno scene, over the past years it has steadily built up its brand around a strong sound with quality line ups and a resident roster of exceptional home grown talent, that continues to raise the bar with each of its unique events. sunday breakfast records is an extension of this by where its resident artists are put forward to showcase the sbz sound that has become synonymous with their parties. each release will carry the signature sound from a member of the roster as well as from some of the regular guest djs who have played with the party label over the years.
