july sees radio slave’s rekids invite britain’s renowned swayzak to the roster with a cold war themed release entitled ‘odessa calling’ ep. a name associated with quality, swayzak’s ability to retain their signature sound whilst producing across various sub-genres has cemented them a solid reputation since their humble beginnings in the 90s. their impressive back catalogue includes six studio albums and appearances on labels like k7, m_nus, curle, ellum and swayzak’s own label 240 volts, which was relaunched in 2017. originally a duo comprised of david brown and james taylor, brown has been helming the project solo since 2012. he now joins respected berlin-based imprint rekids with two inspired productions. ‘odessa calling’ is a mysterious track with hypnotic synths, mesmerising pads and enigmatic vocals that combine together to create a celestial aesthetic. on the flipside, ‘numbers station’ continues with the otherworldly feel employing shimmering percussion that wanders alongside a brooding bassline for a well refined finish to the package.

amsterdam based luuk van dijk is welcomed into the hot creations fold this july with his heavy-hitting parallax e.p. chicago production wizard dj skull is also on board to rework the b-side. title track parallax is set to cause a serious stir at festivals and clubs alike this summer. the smattering of high-hats elevate the track as the space-like beeps and blips add another facet. on the flip, dimension applies an ominous vocal stab as the bass rumbles — perfect for low ceiling basement raves. on the remix, dj skull adds a touch of chicago class via some softer vocals, dubby chords and a pounding bass. at the tender age of 22, luuk van dijk has been signed to acclaimed labels such as viva music, roush, food music, sanity and lost records. championed by stalwarts such as steve lawler and eats everything, he has taken his sound to some of the world’s most prestigious events. ron maney aka dj skull became known for being one of the first djs to play the new sound coming out of chicago, honing his craft at the infamous music box and power plant. releasing records since the early 90s, he later launched his own labels hypnotic tones and wax candy records. recent releases have appeared on chiwax, domina trxxx and mentha records.

this new chicago based label is runned by steve poindexter and traxman. the first release comes also from the label heads. track a2. is an remarkeble co-production between steve poindexter and legendary armando. on b2. traxman remixed armandos -snare yo azz off-. must have - not only for all chicago house fans!

luv dancin’ is an absolutely essential record. the underground solution was one of the monikers for roger sanchez, one of the most prolific house music producers in the 90s. this 1990 anthem luv dancin is a nyc deep house benchmark. based on arthur russell’s disco classic is it all over my face and with elements of the bottle interspersed with a deep, rolling garage bassline, dreamy keys and pads, the “s” man crafted a timeless piece of dance music that still inspires today and is often imitated yet obviously never bettered! a side is the remix version featuring jasmine on vocals, while the b side is the sought after “in deep mix” from the original 12”. as with all our ny house classics, first time available on 7”.

if peace, love, unity and freedom are some of the pillars of house music “follow me” is a call to action. this vocal driven cut instantly become an anthem and one house music’s most revered songs. although they did not release more than a dozen singles, aly-us made their greatest impact with the 1992 single -follow me.- produced by kyle smith and written by smith with vocalists eddie -super- lewis and william -kaylin-x- jennings, the deep and uplifting track became an early- 90s house classic and continues to be one of the most memorable tracks out of the vast strictly rhythm catalog. original mix on the a, and dub on the b-side. available for the first time as a 7”.

hailing from the mists of the early 90s uk techno scene, ramjac corporation s -cameroon massif!- epitomises everything great about the anything goes spirit of the scene prior to firm genre boundaries being established. emotional rescue have done the right thing and brought the vintage curio back to light, and what a return it is. while it shows its age, it sounds in fine fettle, all rolling breaks, trancey zaps and mysterious vocal hooks that positively draw you into a transcendental rave headspace. both the -massive- and -massing- mixes are essential, but then you also get the added bonus of a live version from a reunion gig back in 2009.

arthur baker and murk are two of the most iconic brands in electronic music. arthur baker’s career started in boston, and then hit its stride while he was living in new york city in the 80s and 90s, and he now spends much of his time in miami. oscar g and ralph falcon aka murk were born, raised, and lived their entire lives in miami. this new single is a culmination of the three artists spending time together in miami, and djing on the weekly murk monday events at renowned miami location coyo taco (delicious tacos up front, beats in a secret club in the back). coyo combines the tribal house percussion that murk is known for with the party-driven synths, vocals and instrumentation that is arthur baker’s trademark.

the music of brendon anderegg is a hall of mirrors, multilayered and self-obscuring. largely filtered through mountains, his pioneering electronic project with koen holtkamp, anderegg emerged as a solo artist in the late ‘90s. in recent years, anderegg has become sought after for his film scoring and audio work with his studio telescope audio, contributing to emmy-nominated films 102 minutes that changed america and 9/11: the days after for the history channel, and working with clients from espn to laura poitras’ praxis films. he returns now with june on thrill jockey.

instincts just a feeling is the pure embodiment of an early 90s detroit techno record. originally released in 1992 on instincts decisive record , not many copies managed to get outside of the city of detroit. within the melodic strings, 808s, and loosely swung samples - you can feel the spirit of these early days and of this young producer finding his sound. meticulously remastered by josh bonati from the master tapes for this 2018 issue.

mathias schaffhauser, founder of german label ware records debuts on third ear with a 3 track 12inch. this is big-sky, expansive, driving techno even the beatless version of grad minus 12. mathias schaffhaeusers ware records had a very recognisable sound. it was one of the defining labels of the cologne sound, most associated with kompakt these days. but in the 90s and early 00s, ware was as significant a label, especially for djs. this release is very much a good example of that sound, still sounding fresh and bristling with good energy.

some crate-digging compilations are often the result of someone hand-picking their choice favourites from another country’s musical history, perhaps unaware or uninvolved with its cultural lineage in the process. on this release - a treasure trove of synth jams, pop, samba boogie, balearic and electro from 1980 & ‘90s brazil - the tracks are picked by millos kaiser, one half of the brazilian duo selvagem, who are at the helm of throwing some of the country’s best dance parties. it’s a rare compilation that offers brazilian music actually picked by a brazilian.
this collection of sixteen tracks doesn’t comprise tracks scoured from deeply in-demand records, the rare sort that sell for eye-watering sums and that collectors spend years tracking down. they are the sort you’d find for a few quid should you come across but, as kaiser says, “the problem is finding them. they aren’t rare because everyone wants a copy but because no one wants them, not even the dealers.”

after a wildly successful collaboration on thatmanmonkzs turn it out from the lp, columbus-ing, dave aju suggested they should continue their production streak for a new percussive tracks project. at the same time, aju had finally kept his word to legendary bay area club/underground mc and personality, foxxee aka foxxee brown aka lawrence petty, to work on a track together as well. petty being a core part of the infamous ya mamas house radio show on 106 kmel alongside pete avila and david harness that introduced legions of young bay area djs to real house music, includ-ing aju, in the early 90s.

tadd mullinix, who s best known for the hip-hop he makes as dabrye and the acid-tinged house and techno under jtc, has added yet another alias to his repertoire, and it might be his most inventive project to date. x-altera and its debut album, the eponymous x-altera, were born from a fit of rediscovery. all at once, the ann arbor-based producer reconnected with the jungle he produced in the late 90s as half of soundmurderer & sk-1, revisited the forgotten b-sides of his drum & bass record collection, and fell back in love with the deep, melodic techno of detroit and london.

emmanuel top has been releasing belter records ever since he first emerged in the early 90s. in recent times the paris based artist has done several heavy hitting singles with a number of respected labels. m10 is a special 2 track record that has two version of the sought after “festival suicide” record that popped up in many dj sets over the last year. while the closing night mix (a-side) is a gloomy, yet staggering work of low-down techno, the opening night mix (b-side) is a based on a soaring lead sound that serves as the back bone of this anticipated 12”.

powerpill promises nothing but good times from an unknown source, from the day glo label art to the playful, upfront techno cut into the wax. this is no nonsense club stuff, leading in with the chirpy acid strut of -track 1- before getting tangled up in the modulating electro lines of -track 2-. -track 3- has a more overtly 90s vibe to it, calling to mind the early uk techno scene in its bleeping leads and dubby undercurrents. -track 4- finishes the record off with the toughest jam of the lot, but it s still a nimble affair that shuns the trend towards pitch-black techno and instead embraces a spread of melodic threads throughout the track.

following a string of tour dates with his good friend joy orbison and setting up his own well st records imprint, fold returns to aus with the ‘aegean sea ep. rob glassett aka fold delivers three 90s peacefrog inspired deep percussive house jams, accompanied by a big room broken beat mall grab remix.

on a mission is exactly that, a mission of love, a mission of peace . the positive vocals hark back to those of early 90s house tracks, which created unity through music and clubbing. the rhythmic beat of the drum is determined, as percussive layers build and the vocals bleed into the synths. francois k provides two variations of the track. his remix features more prominent drumbeats driven by a growling bassline. on his rockers dub version, francois goes all out and dubs us into the stratosphere. up next is the michael mayer remix, with a more electronic take on the original with driving synths and a whirring, throbbing bass-line.

limited repress. for the last 20 and something years, matt thibideau has been involved in making electronic music. in the mid 90s he dove into making ambient and techno music after experiencing some of canadas underground parties. this lead to several releases on blue recordings with matts moniker at the time - >altitude<. under this alias he produced several dub techno classics, but he stopped using it about 15 years ago to work with new german labels. we are happy that after making a comeback on labels like assemble music or helena, matt decided to open the new color series on vade mecum, which focuses on 10inch dub techno styled vinyl.

camea&#700,,,,s latest release on her imprint neverwhere pays homage to her hometown seattle&#700,,,,s original underground rave warehouse, naf studios, where she went dancing in the late 90s and began her journey that ultimately landed her in berlin. also where nirvanna&#700,,,,s “smells like teen spirit” video was filmed (and ironically now a catholic publishing house), the hedonistic venue is legendary to those who picked up rave flyers scattered on the streets of seattle and took a chance on an emerging new electronic music scene. both originals reflect the raw warehouse vibe of this era, and matrixxman and markus suckut have weighed in with heavy remixes. markus puts his signature on the naf 97 original with a deep space atmospheric techno banger, and matrixxman reworks the original 303 recordings in jack u, sending it into another dimension - and even further.

erotek is back with his first ep since 2004 with a hybrid ghetto electro ep. “double time”, co produced with the anxious beat director, and “this i know” have been produced in recent times whereas the other 2 tracks “4mo” and “twisted truths” are archival projects from the end of the 90s. varying from 4/4 beats to broken patterns and electroid rhythms, this ep presents different facets of one of the classic detroit ghettotek producers.

in 2013 casey tucker was thrust into the limelight after 15 years in the shadows. never truly getting the recognition for is detroit influenced and post rave sound in the 90s, for those that knoe reissued some of caseys classic material and unearthed some gems on dat in 2013. fast forward to the current day and a recent treasure trove was uncovered and some fresh dats untouched since the late 90s were discovered! ben promptly bought a dat player on ebay and shipped it to casey s home for the un-dusting to commence. fttk has worked with casey to present another round of authentic material for this final installment (maybe) of his classic productions

having pinned to perfection the sonics of the adriatic, croatias love international festival bottles up their blissed out rhythms and sunrise sessions for the inauguration of love international recordings, fittingly, with a first release from uk producer begin. bringing the love international feel to wax and digital, the label will encapsulate the range of music the festival’s secluded party paradise has become renowned for. all the way from the balearic tinges of this first release, to the meatier house, techno and electro selections on show at barbarellas. begin aka james holroyd has a long history with love international. dating back to the early 2000s, holroyd was one of the first guest djs at the old garden festival on the former festival site in petrcane. long serving chemical brothers tour dj, back to basics resident since the 90s and bugged out co founder, begin has long paid his paid his dues to the scene. in the words of dave harvey: hes been an absolute workhorse in dance music for time. love international 001s tracks seemingly fit the festivals own daily lifecycle. from the docile guitar picking of meditative ep opener wood trees to the slow daybreak funk of‘daypulse where synths pierce through the track like sun rays through the adriatic dusk, the ep is a holistic reflection of what one might hear at one of the festivals fabled sunrise sessions. garden interlude ushers in a fresh burst of energy, with the revitalizing sounds of piano house, paired with warming neo soul vocals. into the fun is a self fulfilling prophecy, closing the ep on a quintessentially balearic note.

field of dreams are field theorys chris kentish and dj al mackenzie. field theory have recently had tracks on respected labels such as futureboogie and secret life gaining rave reviews and even garnering plays on bbc radio 6 music. al has been a dj since the late 80s, now resident at birminghams great outdoors. he s made numerous records over the years but will probably be remembered primarily for his 90s band d:ream making number one all over the world and remixing for emf and duran duran amongst others. bumping into each other in the street one dayand realising they lived opposite each other, they seized upon the chance to combine their favourite passions, making music and drinking.

suction records is proud to present ii - a new, archival ep release by italian duo d’arcangelo. we like to think of ii as an imaginary sequel to the duos classic 1996 debut ep on aphex twins legendary, now-defunct rephlex records (also reissued on suction last year). just like their debut ep, the material on ii was recorded in the ‘90s using hardware synths, samplers, and fx. also like their debut, ii similarly features fierce, crunchy industrialized electronix on side a, backed with melodic, robotic electro (the darcangelo brothers call these tracks their diagrams) on side b. four of the six tracks are previously unreleased, while aom2 (an absolute monster rephlex-style distorted beat track) and diagram ix (a timeless slice of early-human league-style synth pop) come from long-out-of-print 90s vinyl comps on eclectic records and suction records, respectively.
