back in soviet times when the official local music market was controlled by the biggest record monopoly in history melodiya, many local musicians who wanted to express themselves in actual form, released tapes themselves and spread it through a big underground market network called magnitizdat (short of magnetic tape release). it began in the 60s with soviet rock movement and illegal copies of foreign music which got through border with tourists, seamen and diplomats. in the late 80s you could find there many different shades of music from underground protest rock, post punk, avant-garde to a lot of electronic pop, local kind of italo disco and dj s mixtapes with a personal rap on top of it. plus seven records begins a sublable series of remastered edits which narrate about dance part of this story.

dont touch my sister is romain azzaros rouge mécanique début album. cinematic hazy instrumentals and a heady mix of post-punk, italo disco, ambient and noise shine through azzaros dedication to his signature telecaster slide-guitar, bringing acoustic life to electronica. citing the visual realm as a strong influence on his music, rouge mécaniques releases are often accompanied by short films and hand picked design. the prelude video for dont touch my sister was born of a collaboration between romain azzaro and the film maker louis vignat, as inspired by the cover artwork of les beaux arts de paris artist jeanne briand.

two and a half minutes of drums rolling under a whirlwind of cranky guitars and vocals arguing from the bottom of a 1990’s boom box, that’s 51 black super. 11 tracks and 30 minutes to cross the usa, from california with pavement and weezer to ohio with guided by voices and the raspberries. 51 black super isnt a band to get lost on its way, or in futilities. written, composed, recorded in an emergency, with short and intense sessions, the debut album by 51 black super is made in the image of its creators: spontaneous and eager to get things out there. sounds like the strokes with less cocaine and more facial hair, said a californian rock critic after listening the two first few tracks.

what sam kdc has achieved here is nothing short of genius. this is a very filmic visual lp and will take you away to another world. this also shows that sam’s production skills are very thoughtful and mindful of the potential listeners that should flock on mass to this chilled out and wonderfully crafted lp. if you like the deeper side of music and all things ambient, then this is a no brainer, it’s from the top drawer of the quality cupboard. if you just want something mellow as an alternative then this is the one for you.

after a short break, 200 records is back with sebastian habbens solo debut >inner city<. habben, based in cologne, is one half of the producer and dj duo raucherecke who have released three eps on our label so far. lately, sebastian has concentrated on his own label >im in love< and his solo career. quite recently he released his tracks >nebel< on chilean imprint drumma records.

the original version is nothing short of a classic, but its as if the song had never been invited to a louie vega post-midnight global extravaganza. was the song not aware that spellbound dancing and high bpms were the standard for house music? normally, such a blaring disregard for nightlife decorum would relegate a song to the pits of sonic hell, but we’re talking about george clinton here! the original opens up with a g-funk groove that screams westside and lowriders. the listener is then blessed with clinton as he adds his sage, soulful and pimpadelic vocals, complemented by funkadelic singers asking him about the pains of the funk. the semblance of a beat that could drive the dancefloor into the morning hours is there, but in no way has it blossomed into its full glory. enter louie vega.

nicolas villebrun, half of society of silence and acid square dance, is putting out his first solo album on fragil musique, accurately titled « snare roll lp ». villebrun only needed a couple of recording sessions during a short period of time, to put the whole thing out from a unique set up. although an accomplished musician, tite seems to leave his technical skills aside when crafting his music, embracing all the spontaneity one would expect from a techno producer. listening to the lp, the title starts to make sense. when the snares are not rolling, the smooth basslines take over, strongly dragging bodies towards the dance floor. hungry man, move into hell, a white track, and the amazing the bell glides are among those. basslines curved as a horse s behind, subtly swifting through the air, are playing around with smartly spread out rhythms and textures. tite comes up with nine commonly grounded tracks, but with the necessary talent and sharpness to produce a resolutely fine, homogeneous, and yet diversified techno lp.
