the songs, the words, the melodies in this album, they all matter to me because they represent the real time outworking of my own trauma, pain and discovery of joy and peace. but there is a life inside this record equally important to all of the above, which is also trying to be communicated. it’s almost like how listening to a song in a foreign language doesn’t hinder you from absorbing what the song is communicating. in listening closely as i expose myself to myself, that is where the art is. maybe every time we have the courage to unabashedly be true in ourselves, the courage to do the same is received by someone else.

songs about the unity of sudan, peace between muslims and christians and the fate of war orphans, backed by grooves equally taking influence from arabic sounds, american funk as well as neighboring ethiopia. kamal keila was among the first artist we met in sudan during our two trips to khartoum and omdurman last year. he is one of the key figures of the sudanese jazz scene that was a vital part of the musical culture in sudan from the mid 1960s until the islamist revolution in the late 1980s. when we meet kamal he luckily presented us with two mold covered studio reels. each tape included five tracks. one with english lyrics and another with arabic ones. musically you can hear the influence of neighboring ethiopia much more than on other sudanese recordings of the time, as well as references to fela and american funk and soul. his lyrics, at least when he sings in english which gave him more freedom from censorship, are very political. a brave statement in the political climate of sudan of the last decades, preaching for the unity of sudan, peace between muslims and christians and singing the blues about the fate of war orphans called shmasha. a note inside one of the boxes specified the track titles, durations and the fact that the sessions were recorded on the 12th of august 1992. both sessions stand as a hearable testament how kamal keila stuck to a sound aesthetic from decades ago, while incorporating current events into his lyrics. kamal keilas album is the first in a series of releases covering the sudanese jazz scene on habibi funk. be on the lookout for albums by the scorpions and sharhabeel coming soon.

as one of the most prolific hip hop producers of all time madlib collaborated with different artists and recorded own songs under different pseudonyms. during his outstanding year 2003 he released the crown on his work, the remix album shades of blue. the album untinted contains the source material for the project and is a fantastic intro to compare all the material from both recordings. it s a great dose of jazz in which madlib focuses on the soul and jazz stuff he used for the recordings. with songs by among others herbie hancock, horace silver and donald byrd the 12-track album gives you an indication of the way madlib created his pieces. pressing on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

on a mission is exactly that, a mission of love, a mission of peace . the positive vocals hark back to those of early 90s house tracks, which created unity through music and clubbing. the rhythmic beat of the drum is determined, as percussive layers build and the vocals bleed into the synths. francois k provides two variations of the track. his remix features more prominent drumbeats driven by a growling bassline. on his rockers dub version, francois goes all out and dubs us into the stratosphere. up next is the michael mayer remix, with a more electronic take on the original with driving synths and a whirring, throbbing bass-line.

klas henrik lindblad better known as sasse or freestyle man has been a friend of our label for many years and also released together with dorian for our raum musik compilation in 2005. soul sounds without any doubt still is one of his absolute masterpieces and he was never willing to do anything with it and just let it rest in peace until the idea came up to re release it for our label. usually we are not licensing or re releasing anything but sasse and especially this track of him definitely deserve it. as it is also our 20 years anniversary we got one of our key artists on board that has been playing the track again a lot recently and that also immediately liked the idea of remixing this track and this is the result now. we are happy to present you the original track of sasse plus two remixes by our dear friend ricardo villalobos and label head dorian paic together. enjoy !

dark entries is honored to re-issue one of the greatest and most overlooked albums of the 1970s. time actor was the result of a collaboration between legendary crazy world & kingdom come visionary arthur brown and german synthesizer and ambient genius klaus schulze, recording under the pseudonym of his alter-ego richard wahnfried. richard is the name of klaus son born in 1979, and the first name of the german composer wagner. wahnfried is the name of richard wagners house, from the german -wähnen frieden fand (that his search and hopes will find peace). the album was a unique fusion of brown s eccentric musical vision and schulze s mastery of synthesis. the album was originally released in 1979 on the german innovative communication label. time actor stands out amongst schulze s massive catalog as a masterwork of avant garde new age. schulze helms the project on electronics, and guests include michael shrieve on percussion, vincent crane on keyboards, and vocalist arthur brown, who sings – or should we say, speaks – on top of it all. schulze describes the wahnfried project in the liner notes as “the collective pseudonym of an idea: time-electronic, an experiment between avantgarde and muzak: utility-music for sound-covered environment, in which a new generation grows up: richard wahnfried is this generation: music between genius and nonsense: new ideas transported by an old medium to your ear.” this newly re-mastered reissue expands the original 60 minutes of music across a double lp to help with playback and distortion experienced on original pressings. we’ve added a bonus track in the form of a cosmic 12-minute extended remix by italian producer and dj maurizio delvecchio from 1983. all songs have been remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. housed in a gatefold jacket with original album artwork featuring a surreal painting by german artist peter nagel plus lyrics and notes. “i wish you plenty of time” - klaus schulze
