vor exakt 15 jahren wurde yann tiersen für seinen soundtrack zum spielfilm -die wunderbare welt der amelie- gefeiert. yann tiersen machte deutlich, wie man mit reduzierten musikalischen mitteln eine maximale emotionale wirkung entfaltet. und auch wenn die letzten drei alben -infinity- (2014), -skyline- (2011) und -dust lane- (2010) eine erweiterte musiksprache nutzen, die eine band mit einschloss, so ist yann tiersens tiefe und sein musikalischer mut auch in diesem zusammenhang zu spüren. -eusa- kehrt nun zum zeitgenössischen minimalismus zurück. ursprünglich wurde -eusa- als notenbuch für klavier veröffentlicht. als yann tiersen die stücke auf einer tournee vorstellte, bekam er lust diese für ein album aufzunehmen. neben der klavier-einspielung, die in den londoner abbey road studios entstand, unternahm tiersen auf ouessant field recordings. sie geben eindrücke von den verschiedenen plätzen auf der insel wieder, fangen das meeresrauschen, den wind, tierlaute und andere klänge ein.

rhythm büro is a new record label based out of kiev, ukraine started by dj and promoter igor glushko. the büro first began as a local party series organised by igor, alexander pavlenko (aka na nich, widely known in the drum’n’bass world as sunchase) and vera logdanidi (aka vero). since the party’s beginning in march 2015, rhythm büro has hosted such greats as zadig, abdulla rashim, etapp kyle, eric cloutier, woo york, artefakt, acronym, steve bicknell and actress all at different non-club warehouse-like locations around kiev. a peculiar aspect of the rhythm büro team’s objective has been to maintain secrecy about the exact location of the party until a day prior to the event, when ticket buyers are then informed about the location via text message or email. the label was started to be the logical and progressive extension to what rhythm büro has established itself to be locally: one of ukraine’s prominent techno initiatives. for the first release of the label, na nich and vero have contributed two joint-produced tracks that are to become their first publicly available material under their current aliases. while a1 leans itself to the soundscape that is more or less typical for rhythm büro parties: trippy, hypnotic and transportive techno, a2 hits the floor with refreshing zeal, bringing an electro-esque break-beat under deep and emotive synth layers. the b side contains two remixes of the title track, one of which is thoroughly tailored by the dutch-born-berlin-based-duo, artefakt (mostly known for their releases on delsin, prologue and field) as well as a strong and heady remix by semantica records’ mastermind, svreca.

the omnibus band was founded by jarda zajpt and petr dikan in 1979 in czechoslovakia. having met at the electronic high school, electronics was their field of expertise. over time, petr dikan constructed several sound devices such as the Šílený fridrich (Šf, crazy frederick) keyboard and the vsd (všude samý dráty/wires everywhere) generator which he operated during the recordings and also at concerts. at that time, heavily influenced by brian eno and robert fripp from the king crimson band, jarda zajpt played the guitars, using all kinds of effects, pre-recorded tapes, and one or more interconnected tape recorders. the first record, “israels”, was produced between 1980 and 1982. in 1985, jarda zajpt swapped a guitar for a keyboard and a new member arrived – pavel zvolenský – who programmed and played the automatic percussions. martin bauer, playing the bass guitar, completed the trio. they have produced a second album, “rhythmus”, in this assembly. remastered from unreleased tape recordings. this is the first release in the framework of the project jupiter 08 – archeology of the slavic electronic sound.

federico leocata is an italian audio-visual artist who has exhibited in athens, thessaloniki and catania. later expanding his art into the field of sound based analysis of the human psyche. first discovered by heinrich mueller (dopplereffekt, drexciya), federico released his first ep in 2010 for the belgian imprint wemè records, attracting further interest from labels like frustrated funk and last known trajectory.

damien lynch enjoys countryside a drive in the twilight hour. this is his second offering for the esp institute. on side a, brunette opens with a straight-ahead techno thump of hi-hats and a pulsating 16th-note bassline—a subtle playing field composed solely with a rare 1970’s italian machine, the godwin drummaker 32, unearthed from the secret back room of a music shop in rural ireland where it hid among wonderful vintage russian synths and oddball electronics. this elegant track drips with warm and phasing pads, gentle staccato keys and beautifully simple arpeggios that blur every now and then—all affirming damien’s less-is-more ideology. with side b’s forced relax, damien continues to exercise his restraint, arranging his instruments in a band-like fashion, affording each player the sonic space to project their individual qualities whilst supporting an overall dialogue. there is a soft ebb and flow to every machine’s role, whether the swelling of bass or the interplay of percussive keys, but when these characters arrive in one place, the result is a tranquil euphoria. these two songs will accept you for who you truly are.

the experimental italian composer returns to pan with a new lp, titled ‘clonic earth’. his ongoing output for the label has long-presented his electroacoustic sound compositions where since the mid-’00s, he has utilized analogue live sampling and real-time editing of field and studio recordings by means of manipulation of 1/4 inch tape.

testarossa is third studio album by brinstaar. he says that this album is dedicated to redheaded blue-skinned goddess. this work is reflecting brinstaar’s deep and emotional chase for the elusive moment of infinite bliss that keeps him alive and conscious.
while using mainly processed guitars for infotswetock and synths for mielisss, brinstaar uses a lot of acoustic instruments and field recorded sounds in testarossa now, thus creates much more intimate compositions. of course, his specialty mesmerizing synth parts and precisely constructed guitar timbres are still here too.

one of the most accomplished and celebrated bands in the field of contemporary, unclassified pop music. almamegretta are masters in combining a wide range of elements such as dub, funk, reggae, world and electronica, all filtered through their own deep southern italian roots. the band from naples is now back with a new album, mixed by the dub master adrian sherwood, who had already been involved in their mid-nineties masterpiece “sanacore”. this new work consists of ten tracks, nine originals plus a well chosen cover of an old neapolitan hit by nino d’angelo transformed into a lovers rock style song. almamegretta’s original line up of gennaro t tesone, paolo polcari and raiz is augmented by a great list of collaborators and the result is a strong and multi layered set made of afro-funk numbers, reggae ballads, and other riddims, while the british dub influence remains central within the group’s wide sound palette. the title “ennenne”, which means no name, is inspired by the acronym used for those who are born from unknown parents. the right title for such a highly dense picture based on the combination of contemporary sounds and social topics.

the ep originally released on raster-noton in 2001, it never been released on vinyl till now. and finally available again briefly on japanese label flau s raum series. new pressing now available on clear vinyl. open close open, the title of robert lippok s release, can obviously be seen in the context of daily maxims: instructions you can find on packagings, household appliances, stereo systems and other operating instructions. neverthelesss, open close open also stands in connection with making things like space and perception accessible to yourself - and therefore with the opening of a fictious memory. on this release, analogue field recordings, digital remains and cultural fragments are condensed into an accoustic space. the call of crows and door slamming noises meet looped sound pieces from a minidisc recorder and samples from a mahler symphony.

andre lodemann is a highly regarded producer from berlin whose debut release dropped in 2004 on mike grant s legendary moods & grooves label. last year saw andre lodemann release his innervisions debut leaving the comfort zone ep. he has remixed for labels such as innervisions, buzzin fly, poker flat and rebirth. squares is a brand new side-project from fish go deep, focusing on completely hardware-based productions and slightly more experimental, left field deep house. tony lionni continues to impress following his osgut ton smash found a place (which continues to drive dance floors into a frenzy worldwide) with releases on versatile, mule, wave and madhouse.

hidhawk is the musical alter ego of haydeé jiménez. the mexican-based artist and cultural entrepreneur is running a busy life organizing events and cultural projects alongside the border of mexico and the us. during the night, bedtime stories like alpagain evolve from the field recordings she is collecting on her various journeys. alpagain consists of recordings from istanbul, tijuana, berlin and salzburg, featuring sounds of alpine instruments such as the alphorn, ocarina and hammered dulcimer (hackbrett). the 15 minutes track is brought to the club context on the b-side of the record with a driving remix by gerald peklar and a dub retreatment by analog solutions mastermind eduardo de la calle.

quite a few months have passed since adam port released his last original material on keinemusik. it’s been almost too long. but then again, every expert will confirm, you won’t see a “sonnenfinsternis” every other week. port’s new ep is going under the name of that very astronomical curiosity and accordingly, the like-titled cut on a can only be the result of a rare cosmic constellation. it starts with a spoken word field recording. could it be, someone secretly recorded parts of the internal pre-release labelmeeting? we’ll leave that to your imagination. but then, all solid facts. a forceful beat, decorated with hihat-hiss, stoically pounding synthbass, rattling snare-staccato and space-opening synth-layers. finally, some siren’s wailing, just in case someone didn’t get the immediacy of this material. classy floor substance, that is, with the scarcity value of an eclipse. “working for it”, as the first track on the flipside, is rather going for the deeper realms. this coproduction with jennifer touch, a singer/producer that just moved from leipzig to berlin, is built up on a cosy, warm synth-priming, that touch congenially contrasts with her undercooled wavy vocals. an emotional rollercoaster, if you will.

ritornell’s richard eigner & abby lee tee originally teamed up to provide the score for a collaboration with filmmaker andreea sasaran and illustrator katja seifert entitled »melting sphere«. sharing a passion for the combination of filigree electronics with playful timbres of diverse acoustic instruments and odd utensils, the cooperation of the two producers was a logical choice.
»melting sphere« merges subsonic bass, kalimba rhythms, accordion sounds and toy bells, all framed by eavesdropping recordings of abby lee tee’s cat, bathroom squeaks for five minutes of organic downbeat bliss.
»tired dancers« on the flipside offers a melancholy tale of seduction relayed from the shadows, with field recordings of nightly city noise, a reversed music box melody, hypnotic chords and meticulous percussion. delicate, celestial cello (by lukas lauermann) and contrabass flute emerge as counterpoint to this rhythmic hypnosis.
this record is as shimmering as you would expect.

sebastian mullaert is of course first of all known as half of minilogue, a duo so influential in the hypnotic field of techno that korg recently named a synthesizer after them. lately, sebastian has focused on his solo path under the wa wu we moniker, releasing stripped back and personal music on his own wa wu we label, the cryptic s.e.l.f label and now on kontra-musik. on the title track travellers, sebastian mullaert uses a straight up techno formula that may surprise listeners who haven t followed his move into wa wu we territory. you almost get the impression sebastian buried a recording destined for a rigid techno label in a deep forest back in the 90 s and has now decided to uncover it again, finding that the track has matured under the black soil.
