the 4th meters album marked their departure from josie records and was released on the reprise label in 1972. cabbage alley once again proved that the meters were one of the finest, rawest funk groups around. hailing from the soggy streets of new orleans, the meters essentially invented the second line groove, influencing funk music like no other artist (ok, aside from a singer by the name of james brown). these cats are essentially one unified rhythm section, with expertly timed drum breaks, bass driven grooves, bluesy chicken scratch guitars and southern singalong choruses.

just as magnified record grooves reveal dust constellations and lunar landscapes, so too does godblesscomputers’ third album. “solchi” is a deep search into previous moments in lorenzo nada’s lifetime, influenced by the presence and power of music. his process began with the recovery of some old cassettes, mixtapes nearly forgotten, audio recording of voices from his childhood, and lots of dusty jazz, soul, and hip-hop records. as the starting point of this travel merge with its end, past and present combine to form gbc’s current sound. warm electronic production rooted by grooving bass lines form the core of a kaleidoscope of sixteen tracks, colored by synthesizers, guitar echoes, scratches, samples, fading voices and kalimba. the album is a collection of sixteen stories, sixteen soundscapes, each of them gbc’s tribute to the path taken thus far, an homage to his love for music. the recording and studio work took place over a year, with the adding and subtracting of many elements. for this project, gbc invited several musicians into his home studio, both old friends and new. they helped to recreate the sounds of the original recovered recording, as well as add fresh ideas to the project.

in 1999, the duo of dj t-rock & squashy nice formed in atlanta. squashy nice is an accomplished beats producer, and dj t-rock is a scratch-master responsible for battle records on the likes of bomb hip-hop records, stereo-type, and replicant music trading corp. together they released three party-ready instrumental hip hop albums for new zealand’s why records label. now based from coast-to-coast (squashy nice in new york and dj t-rock in los angeles), the duo has joined the cold busted family for their fourth album, the satisfying seventeen track back to the essence. showcasing the variety and breadth that squashy nices beats and samples and dj t-rocks scratches can provide, the tracks on back to the essence swerve from party rockers to soulful, thoughtful numbers featuring vocals from new zealand vocalist miss glue. among the standouts are the opening hit the breaks, combining harmonica, 60s style fuzz guitar, heavy beats, and some crucial vocal scratches, let them be, with miss glues lovely vocals providing a counterpoint to acoustic guitar cut-ups, and watch the clouds, featuring gentle piano, a loungey string section breakdown, and wistful vocals from squashy nice. back to the essence should be ingested whole, as its plentiful tracks radiate fun, funk, and good vibes. its like a virtual block party dropping down wherever its cuts are playing.

austin-based musician eliot lipp delivers “skywave”, an album lipp has been working on for the past several months. with influences from sci-fi soundtracks and 70s and 80s funk, he channels a collection of weird, high-definition, melodic beats. in these nine songs lipp feels he “might have everything i want to say in one moment.” recreating key musical moments in a current and relatable way was the goal in producing skywave and giving himself permission to take some risks as well. with a versatile approach, lipp has created opportunities to connect with some of the artists he first looked up to, playing in cities across america and abroad always returning to his hometown in the pacific northwest. collaboration plays a role in all his albums. he’s been a fan of emancipator for a years now and was beyond excited to get his “not quite awake” remix. he asked dmc champ chris karns to scratch on ‘joyride’. in addition to doing cuts, chris ended up playing live drums and layering unique vocal samples. ‘reflection’ came from a jam session with gibbz and cherub in their nashville studio. one of lipp’s biggest musical influences last year came from a group of producers from seattle that call themselves fish tank friends. most of them had a hand in the early stages of ‘spiders’. with monthly trips planned from texas back to washington, he anticipates more evenings surrounded by friends, fans, and new listeners where he brings everyone together through the touch of a button.
