Fun Boy Three wurde von Terry Hall, Lynval Golding und Nevile Staples gegründet, nachdem sie im Sommer 1981 The Specials verlassen hatten.
Die Band wandte sich mehr dem Pop zu und veröffentlichte ihre Debüt-Single "The Lunatics (Have Taken Over The Asylum)", die im Oktober 1981 Platz 20 in den britischen Charts erreichte.
Die Ausdauer des Titels wirkt bis heute nach und führte dazu, dass die reformierten Specials mit Terry und Lynval den Titel für ihr Comeback-Album 2019 neu aufnahmen.
