with a career spanning over 20 years worth of djing, production and label work, shlomi aber has gradually cemented his position as one of the scene’s cornerstones. his first outing for figure sees the now barcelona-based artist drawing on his many influences to deliver a tastefully rounded three- tracker. under two worlds grooves sublty aong a funky acid riff, while anthemic synths longilgy recall bygone moments of grandeur. this unique aber-ability, creating a composition that is as elegantly understated as it is undoubtedly epic, also comes through on the record’s b-side. paced only at half-time and drenched in dubby reverb, the weighing beats of ‚rumbles’ engage with delicately shapedhead sounds for some seriously spaced-out head nods. matrix is an tightly woven mesh of machinery insides, which aber nevertheless manages to channel into a fairly straight forward kinetic energy.

fur coat launch new label oddity which aims to showcase a darker, more tripped out techno sound. the first release kicks off with their genesis ep, which features two original tracks and a remix by scottish techno veterans slam. the venezuelan duo of sergio munoz and israel sunshine have released on labels like watergate, crosstown rebels, bpitch control and balance. the genesis eps artwork comes courtesy of barcelona based, colombian born artists lina bassiouny and maria paula quiva.

one of the current techno scene’s ‘hidden treasures’, bristol based a sagittariun has discretely released a wide breadth of music over the last five years for labels like secretsundaze, hypercolour and his own elastic dreams label. two highly acclaimed albums in “dream ritual” and “elasticity” as well as fifteen eps have appealed to those who like their techno without frontiers, taking in blistering 140bpm techno, breakbeat idm and ambient dub with ease. his second release for hypercolour displays signs of crossover appeal at long last… lead track “vanishing point” has already been receiving early plays from the likes of laurent garnier (dropping it in his recent timewarp germany set), spencer parker and len faki. big pumping beats and spiralling fx fall aside to a lone breakbeat that ushers in one pretty special breakdown section. the childlike keys and fathoms deep synth stabs (straight out of the john carpenter school of fathoms deep synth stabs) have already drawn comparisons to the retro 80s vibes to be heard on the american sci-fi horror series stranger things. it’s a breakdown that takes the listener to an uncharted dimension, bookended by slammin’ beats that acts as a perfect mood changer in any set. watch this one soar! “the pathway” keeps things on an all together straighter tip, an incessant tribal loop weaves and filters around a thunderous kick and shuffling hats, ebbing and flowing all the way in what might be a sagittariun’s most club-centric and stripped back production yet. matrixxman (dekmantel/spectral sound) is on hold to deliver a superb remix, pushing the original down a long dark tunnel for a growling and reverberating techno overhaul

time for a little neck bulging, slimy skin hip-slinking summer fun as a true craftsman steps from the studio shadows: jay shepheard, who’s back with a track that’s so infectious if you licked its back you’d trip for weeks. prepare yourselves for ‘bullfrogging’: wry funk, warmth and humanised technoid soul. taking a vocal texture then processing, harmonising and splicing the spawn out of it, jay’s precision balance of electronic hustle and anthromorphised action has all the hallmarks for a summer anthem. ‘early doors’ follows suit and there’s a massive clue in the title… soft-focused, warm, rolling and laced with textured chimes, it’s definitely tailored for those key transitions between warm-up and second gear. deep, trippy but coded with a hookiness that grabs rather than soothes, once again it’s classic shepheard but with a revitalised 2017 twist. hey, he didn’t lock himself away in the studio for twelve months for nothing, right? neither did jay’s long-time friend and neighbour mark henning, a man who hasn’t taken on a remix since the early 2010s. his return to the remix game is as poignant and powerful as jay’s return to releases as he removes around 70 percent of the frog and maximises the bullishness of the elements, creating a relentless tribal slammer of a version that still retains the warmth and soul of jay’s original. two returns to action, three killer tracks, one label you can always count on as your friend and no frogs harmed during the whole process. we’re pulling out some serious stops here.

gidge is a production duo consisting of jonatan nilsson and ludvig stolterman. based in the northern parts of sweden, gidge quickly built a solid fan base with releases of their albums autumn bells, lnlnn and lulin. the music of gidge seems to affect their audience in an emotional way, which eventually resulted in the duo taking the top spot as best new artist at xlr8rs readers poll, as well as having the 3lps ending up on numerous end of year lists. their main source of inspiration is the vast, snow-covered woodlands of the north. gidge have for instance recorded all of their percussions in the forest, using only the sticks and rocks that can be found there. for seoul though came about after the duo went on a trip through asia, and spent a number of days in the south korean capital. they fell in love with seoul, and later on created this two-part hymn for the giant city. applescal created a remix for the track, which you can listen on the b side.

after the success of the first release, we play the music we love strikes again with a new massive ep made by a mysterious but well known artist duo: tdj. after many releases on their label hpty, the analogue guys decided to release on wptmwl02 lights go out, a strong refine ep made to satisfy both dancefloors and polished listeners as well. lights go out is a techno track with dark and rave influences perfect for the big room. lapien, from artefakt project and dvs1 mistress recording, reconstructs the track and trasform the mood. the result is a very deep techno gem. exclusive vinyl. must have!

the album attains a unique harmony while drawing from a myriad of beliefs and practices. syncretism appears not only in the name but in the artwork and the music itself. the independent tonal passages draw on aspects of varied genres while creating a remarkably coherent yet homogeneous work. lvis mejía explores in his second album, topics of the christian religion and the history of man. deftly placed style and tempo contrasts express the various antagonisms found in this discourse. with the use of contemporary music in combination with hints of jazz, mejía designs spherical soundscapes, therefore allowing for musical deformations, hence the title aforma. the result is an experience that evokes abstract musical impressions. a reference to christianity is also embedded in the track order as the first piece patefactio opens the musical event much like a christian mass. the travel proceeds through the lurking clerical chants of aeternus-the final trial, whilst the bells are then calling us to mass with the track in dissonata apocalypse and continuing with the ontological concept of belief in in ghost we trust. everything comes full circle with the history of homo errata as a conglomerate of human errors. this final piece serves also as a link to the second part of the album anthropology of amnesia a musical description of repression and forgetting as a condition of life, which has emerged as a theme of human existence since the beginning of recorded history. with this opening piece artist and musician lvis mejía has created a magical musical experience, leaving us eager for its sequel.

quantum collage is the latest pseudonym of olaf gutbrod aka ohm-g. having built a reputation around his long list of chill out tracks produced while resident in ibiza, this release on martin gretschmann (acid pauli, console) and nico stojan’s ouïe sees him dive into some more electronic textures. ‘lucid dreaming’ is a chugging, groovy trip built around a shuffling beat and dubbed out percussion and horns, tapping into gutbrod’s talent for amplifying the vibe. ‘afrika im weltraum’ adds a little more tempo - a swirling, driving drum loop provides the basis for layers of extra percussion and spacey synths and various chants and radio broadcasts. her beauty certainly draws on some the mastery gutbrod showed in his releases on café del mar and hotel costes cds - a chilled out groover with the sunset / sunrise seemingly in mind.

nice price deal !!! fresh from a big 2010 that saw corrosion become many peoples candidate for album of the year, and a follow up 12inch with remixes from autechre and the black dog that brought even greater attention to the project, the next job for anodyne (colin cloughley) is to now release what is bizarrely his debut solo 12inch. while corrosion showed colins love for early black dog and warp records, this ep starts off with the more growling intent of destruction - a thundering techno/dubstep hybrid that brings together the rawest elements of both genres, punctuated by suitably eerie undertones and venomous bass-heavy snarl - a true club monster if ever there was one. a2 is a straight hitting acid/hoover attack that descends into all sorts of chaos - reminiscent of the power of polygon window coupled with the madness of spiral tribe, this is a track that quickly brings things into disrepute. on the b-side menace 808 revisits the electro/breakbeat rave sound with all sorts of twists and turns that eventually drops into a pure unashamed hands in the air breakdown, one for the fields and festivals this summer? you know it is. closing with the pacy, glitched up breaks of talon, anodyne proves once again that when it comes to haunting yet majestically uplifting dancefloor music, there are few better in the game.
