london-based psych-folk outfit the hanging stars release their much anticipated debut album over the silvery lake in march 2016 via the great pop supplement. blending folky, pastoralism with swampy 60s americana, they sound like the missing link between the california desert sun and the grey skies of london town. the album was recorded between la, nashville and walthamstow, with each of these vastly different places leaving an indelible mark on the songs.

lake ruth’s sound is rooted in 1960’s sonic experimentation, and skillfully blends elements of chamber pop, psych, kraut, jazz and electronic music. cinematic a-side ‘the inconsolable jean-claude’, an imagined portrait of french composer jean-claude vannier, may appeal to fans of his work, along with those of serge gainsbourg and margo guryan. b-side ‘the prisoner’s dilemma’ evokes pentangle and the left banke, with its baroque instrumentation and atmospheric vocals.
