this is a stunning journey into soulful house music

this is the first time this ground-breaking release has been available on 12inch for four decades. that instantly recognizable bassline, the cosmic guitar and then that vocal / flute combo expansions is one of those glorious jazz funk records that really does expand your mind.

debut single breakthrough introduced the insanely catchy but deeply soulful blend of synths and groove, but here on the album that is explored to the fullest with longer breakdowns and more expansive, experimental solos. pocket 5 displays the, possibly unexpected, influences of broken beat and almost combative rhythm playing - particularly in the complex guitar and keys breakdown where koor and o keefe layer conflicting time signatures and battle to ride it out to the heavy drum return.

drawing influences from herbie hancock, idris muhammad and grover washington. the single version of breakthrough is a unique, single-take arrangement of the full-length track from the forthcoming lp murmuration. a backbone of hip-hop-breaks influenced beats, accompanied by a jazz-funk infused sound played by some of the most in-demand players in the country.

ny/nj house producer jihad muhammad, whos previously had releases on west end records, easy street and iwanai out of canada, bestows us with a very special 3 song instrumental ep, 2 of which can be found on this october 2007 sampler. the piano mix of ascension is a gorgeous 124.5 bpm affair with plenty of plucky strings, a deep but not heavy balearic kick & bass drum, bouncy bassline, intermittent synth, & distinctive jazzy piano riffs that ll get the head nodding and hips swaying. expansions is another lovely instrumental but with more of an afro cuban percussive production whle keeping all of the dreamy piano chords and riffs intact and alive. feel the flow and head for the dancefloor…
