sync 24 aka phil bolland is taking a break from his cultivated electronics label to get some well deserved binary treatment. starting out on andrea parker’s uk electro imprint touchin’ bass, phil has consistently produced electro of the highest caliber, be it his solo efforts or remixes for morphology and exaltics to name a few. twilight zones - 4 tracks of raw electro with an experimental approach, pushing the genre into what can only be described as ice cold circuit bent funk.

cultivated electronics presents the first in new series of collaboration eps which sees ce label head sync 24 joining forces with other artists. the first instalment is with the the dark electro purveyor the exaltics (bunker, clone, trust, solar one etc). together they serve up 4 moody yet diverse electro tracks synonymous with the style you would expect from both of these producers.

cultivated electronics is proud to present its 5th release of the year with a remix ep of electro legend carl a finlow aka silicon scally. the track >process< was originally featured cultivated electronics ep 004 and is now re-worked by label head sync 24 and electros flavour of the moment, finish duo morphology. sync 24 opens up the ep with a dark techy interpretation of the original track. chopped up voices, quirky analogue bass lines and spooky atmospheres rolling along at 135 bpm are the order of the day. hot on the heels of two storming eps on abstract forms and an impending long player on zyntax motor city, morphology (aka crc) turn in an analogue machine funk remix combining dark and trippy tones with subtle melodies, sharp beats and tight sequences.

hot on the heels of sync 24s >we rock non-stop< ep cultivated electronics continues into 2010 with its second release for the year. ce006 sees miami meeting london via cuba, with interdimensional transmissions alpha 606 and cultivated label head sync 24 teaming up for their first full release. these two bubbly analogue electro jams follow up their 2009 debut on the touchin bass complilation >geometry<. the a sides >lunar passport< is a minimal, linear affair with stripped down 606 beats, rolling subs, clicky bass and a spooky lead line finished off with spacious pads. the flip sides >forest communication< leans more to the funky side with deep 808 kick drums, quirky sound effects and wet wobbly bass lines. watch out for various realeses from sync 24 this year on cultivated electronics including remixes from scape one, ed chamberlain and plant 43. as well as alpha 606s first long player on interdimensional transmissions scheduled for later in the year.

the ep kicks off with the title track >we rock non-stop<. tight kick drums layered with pitched 808 subs set the basis of the track. chopped up machine and voice samples are then layered with smooth pads and delays to complete the track. the second track of the ep >solvent abuse< sees sync 24 sticking to his dark roots. distorted vocals, haunting pads, trippy sequences and dirty bass combined with rolling beats and subs!
the reverse side of the 12 inch is slightly deeper, techy affair. >chosen module< is a spacious wash of delays and pads mixed with robotic bass and crisp round beats. the final track >marios mushroom< carries on the spaced out trippy theme of the side with more spooky pads, bubbly bass lines and hypnotic rhythms.

m-twelve is a new collaboration between tortured and electrix label owner, billy nasty and nick dunton of surface records, 65d mavericks fame and more recently, poverty is violence label. taking their name, m-twelve, from the iconic fred perry t-shirt, the pair decided to combine forces based on a love of techno and electro, their strong friendship and many late night conversations in the back rooms of various nightclubs. they started recording together last year and the ‘apocalypse in paradise ep’ is the first signs of their monthly meetings at what’s been dubbed, “dunton abbey studios”. the ep features their two original cuts of beautifully crafted emotional electro, the warm and glittering ‘all the things’ and ‘time spent’ with it’s deep narrative and tough machine groove. in addition, remixes of ‘time spent’ come from sync 24 (scand / cultivated electronics) who delivers an energetically fuelled reworking and electro veterans, transparent sound with a stripped and stomping acidic version. billy and nick have also just started work on remixes for tracks by london modular alliance and mr velcro fastener, so expect to hear more of their m-twelve work over the coming months.

when i first stumbled across mix tapes out of hamburgs seminal front club (with klaus stockhausen and boris dlugosch at the helm) during the glorious and carefree early days of the popularized internet, there were certain tracks on them that struck a chord. in fact there was one specifically, i couldnt stop listening to. the mixture of an infectious bass line, a super sharp snare, music and harmony vocal snippets, happy claps and synths lines that evoked pictures of a convertible going down a coastline, and - to top it all off - a tribal chant, was irresistible. after some intensive track-id-hunting pre-shazam, i found out that the heaven-sent hymn was music by an act called syncbeat. originally released in 1984 during the craze that was called uk electro via street sounds resp. streetwave and later licensed to german omnivore zyx records. a joint venture between the electro-funk mastermind,dj pioneer and edit maestro greg wilson as well as manchester musicians martin jackson & andy connell, it is exactly that type of dance track that eludes any classification - as you can see from my description above. or to cite greg wilson himself from one of his essays on the subject of uk electro: the track that received the best response was music by syncbeat, which was full of good vibes and could have easily been re-vamped down the line as a house track.

lybes dimem is a project by visual artist and musician lukas rehm. with elaborate beat structures and the use of error, the music plays with cognitive phenomena and abstraction while maintaining an emotional refuge. lybes dimem is presented in formats ranging from spatial sound experiences to synesthetic shows complementing the auditive layers with visualizations of realtime data, computer graphics and moving image. lukas rehms installative art, and compositions have been internationally presented and awarded with multiple emerging arts prices. syncleft chronem is the first album released by lybes dimem in both digital and vinyl for-mat and accompanied by a moving image artwork. the title reflects the projects interest in the potential of difference, cognitive frictions and exertion: sync variability in the processing of auditive and visual signals, syncleft the synaptic cleft, which is a crucial empty spa- ce in biological neural networks, chronem the chroneme as a theoretical unit to measure the time of an articulated sound. mathematically clean sounds juxtapose patterns and transitions familiar from the realm of organic acoustics. multi-layered noise textures ex- plore the simulated space. a tem- porary continuity is provided by percussive and melodic elements, right until the next escalation, eventually awaiting a concluding resolution. the visual language explores different phenomena and techniques of cognition inspired by the rhetorics of big science (computer graphics, discontinuity of material, pop cultural references).

the first release of -syncretism- is a strong declaration of techno made by cressida. the ep includes 4 tracks, 3 written and produced by cressida and 1 additional mix is made by uvb. all the tracks have got a solid raw sound, an excursion between the hardest industrial, the classic uk acid sounds and new wave. the first track, toxic masculinity, is a punching tune characterized by raw drums, rough synth and break sequencies. second track, the uvb testosterone mix, represents the masculinity killer track, with a screaming human being in a dark environment. third track, snakecharmer, is the anthem killer track characterized by acid and big room sounds. neurotic x represents the other side of the label where the artist experiments his tone bringing you in a post industrial and wave scenario.

the artists and inventors, along with the many other notable composers present on this 2lp compilation, are the true innovators in the sounds and science of electronic music and its production. they are the ones responsible for the dawn of a much revered genre, the originators of the musical concepts that have since developed into what we now know as electronica and dance. these are the true pioneers of electronic music.

in 2011, julia thompson (dj black b1tch) gave me a tdk sa90 tape of a spontaneous live jam by insync recorded in her flat in forest hill, south london in march 1991. she had found it in a drawer when clearing out stuff. she gave it to me to listen to simply thinking i might be interested in hearing it. of course i was, particularly because the date on the tape immediately told me that the session was recorded more than a year before the release of insyncs debut, the seminal storm on irdial discs.
