1954 is the fifth vinyl release on the modern cathedrals label by recent detroit export altstadt echo. staying true to the themes of the the “year series” that began with the 1913 ep and was followed by the 1905 ep, the artist continues to explore somber, broken beat techno with an eroded, highly-textured percussive focus. in the previous two eps from this series, altstadt echo was joined by varg, abdulla rashim, stave, and evigt morker on remix duty. for the 1954 ep, he’s commissioned uk artist szare, who delivers a highly danceable revision that combines the ghostly vocals of the original with highly frenetic percussive injections. the artwork of the ep is aligned with the label’s greyscale documentation of detroit, this time featuring the stunning architecture of the new center district of the city. the photos were taken by the artist prior to his move to berlin in fall 2017.
exhumed tapes i is the first in a multi-artist series of cassette releases on the modern cathedrals label. with label art featuring small details of “important graves,” the series will dig into eery, broken beat techno with gritty textures. the first cassette begins in a natural place: with altstadt echo crafting four works presented with an image depicting the grave-side rubble of his often-referenced inspiration albert camus. it will be limited to 50 hand-numbered physical copies. copyright: modern cathedrals 2018 mastered by tim xavier @ manmade mastering, berlin
the second outing on his midnight themes imprint, marlon hoffstadt touches on featherlight acid, proto trance and jacking house across three tracks, also brimming with sub and dub. fresh from recent releases on hot haus, ransom note records and his own retrograde, marlon hoffstadt is reemerging as a defiant staple of dancefloors far and wide. with his newest release, the berlin producer encourages listeners to engage with the music without the parasitic interferences of 21st century life. so for the next 20 or so minutes - screens off and blinds down to enjoy some pure awareness.
marlon hoffstadt is a rising star as both a dj and producer, effortlessly joining the dots between classic rave and the future of techno. taking a break from running his retrograde label, marlon has cooked up observing the known for ransom note records. over three tracks of warm synths, bubbly acid and emotional chord progressions, the ep sees marlon reimagining house music for todays dancefloor, taking the passion and energy of ‘80s chicago and giving it the production heft of 2017 berlin. opener ‘floating’ is a piano house classic, shot through with chimes and 303 gurgles, nostalgic for a golden age whilst optimistically looking forward. this is peak time house for dancefloors with heart. it’s followed by the computerised funk of ‘arp+’, an acid house roller that teams jacking 303 bass with mournful strings, as sorrowful as it is uplifting. b-side opener ‘batavus’ is a driving tribute to detroit, kevin saunderson-esque keys stabbing over soaring washes of synth, the sound of late nights and starry eyes. london-based scott fraser has added a remix of arp+ that takes marlons classic techno to darker lands, with snapping electro drums and deliberately seasick bass pressure ramping up the claustrophobia. this mix has already been causing huge damage when dropped on dubplate at fraser’s feted body hammer night.

the berlin-based techno and house producer and dj oliver koletzki has fully committed himself to his roots for this album. they can be traced back to pop music of the 80ies and 90ies, while his productions still manage to transport the fresh energy of today’s electronic music productions. großstadtmärchen is a perfect example for a producers album: oliver koletzki has created a musically compact long player while working together with many different singers. both established artists like mieze katz from the german electro-pop outfit mia., the hot german pop-rock-singer axel bosse, critically acclaimed indie band kate mosh as well as newcomers such as fran, pyur and juli holz have contributed to the album. the result are ten songs that easily fluctuate between catchy pop tracks, modern house grooves and 80ies synthesizer pop yet still maintaining a very own koletzkieske sound dynamic. großstadtmärchen, which translates as the tale of the big city starts off with this is leisure. famous pop singer mieze katz has put down her sexy voice on a guitar-based song pattern that functions as an ideal introduction into the craziness of the big city tales. after hearing this, the listener is directly fully drawn into this world when hearing juli holzs softly whispering voice singing about the dilemmas of love in the big city on zuckerwatte (single release date: 7.9.09). this is a very fine electro-pop tune. coming up next oliver koletzki and axel bosse board an underground train that takes them around the berlin u-bahn system and back.

the fifth modern cathedrals release by altstadt echo seeks to exhume genuine, complex, and often contradictory human emotion from dead samples and broken beat structures. throughout the 1905 ep, the artist crafts melodies that embody a tension between nostalgia and frustration, supported by carefully textured and relatively functional percussion. the remix of dry despair by abdulla rashim (ar) strips the original of its lofty chords, instead pursuing a focused and bone-dry experimental techno approach. in contrast, the remix by stave combines elements of the original’s drifting atmosphere with violent industrial percussion.

mid november will see retrograde co-founder marlon hoffstadt pair up with paris brightledge for shattered. following a run of releases for his retrograde label and a track featured on the 100 dirt crew compilation berlin based dj and producer marlon hoffstadt continues his upwards trajectory, once again enlisting the services of legendary chicago vocalist paris brightledge who recently collaborated with paranoid london on their paris dub 1 & 2 records. stepping up first is the original mix of shattered with hoffstadt and brightledge delivered a raw, experimental house feel via broken drums breaks, sweeping synth chords and acidic bass chops, whilst paris vocal stylings add a soulful edge to the record.

the second release on modern cathedrals includes an original mix by altstadt echo supplemented with remixes crafted by donor, luigi tozzi, and asop. the inclusion of donor’s remix represents a continued effort to link together the detroit and brooklyn scenes, while the luigi tozzi remix connects modern cathedrals to the ghastly, dark styles of techno that italian artists have become so respected for. as a core member of the modern cathedrals team and a primary force behind the label’s event series, asop’s remix is the very first public release of work by this incredible new detroit-based artist. but while the artist names change from record to record, the philosophy does not. we continue in a desperate attempt to generate meaning during the short spasm of a lifetime we are given in a world that seems to conspire to prevent this effort’s realization. this situation might be inescapable, but through the rejection of complacency and dogma, we can approach our end with the bitter comfort that we were at least willing to be honest about our situation.
this compilation comes on four lp s with a total of sixteen tracks. more than twenty artists in the electronic music scene surrounding the neustadtmusik label participated on this project. new artist collaborations were formed, knowledge exchanged and experiments tried. these sixteen tracks are as diverse and interesting as they are to us a valuable outcome of the project. from chillout to rather straight techno, there is a wide variety of electronic music styles represented on the lp s. hence it is worth to take a listen to that compilation for all lovers of electronic music.
neustadtmusik, with great pleasure, presents two excellent new tracks. dietrich & strolch have created an exquisite, smooth piece of music. the two brothers, who are known for their live sets that take their audience on a journey, have combined their passion for percussions and wicked synth sound perfectly. this track takes you to a deep underground techno dance floor where you find yourself dancing with your eyes closed and drifting away into another dimension, to the ocean, the sun and warm sand between your feet and back. sous sol s track on this release has it all, including a sense of delight that brings out a smile on your face. the rolling bass line brings in mind the siberian express rolling through the cold winter landscape of russia while at the same time there is warmth and the heart gets filled with these warm elements. this rolls parallel to a consistent build up throughout the whole track that makes this composition just perfect.
stadtrandlichter vereint die charmante unvollkommenheit von -weit weg- mit der wohligen wärme von -so sehr dabei- und klingt dabei trotzdem reifer, vollkommener, eine stufe weiter. dass es dieses album gibt, ist nicht selbstverständlich. nach -an und für sich- hatte sich bei clueso unzufriedenheit breit gemacht. er wusste, dass sich etwas ändern musste - konnte aber nicht genau benennen was. einzig logische konsequenz: eine pause, auszeit auf unbestimmte zeit. statt fristen einzuhalten und anderen gerecht zu werden, ließ er sich treiben, gründete mit freunden das label text und ton und probierte mit aufnahme- und mixingtools herum. unbemerkt begannen die ersten stadtrandlichter zu leuchten ... * stadtrandlichter* ist ein bauchalbum, ein spielerisches sammeln von momentaufnahmen. und vor allem die geschichte einer neu entflammten liebe zur musik.
