“tyrants” by raz ohara is an album that is rich and diverse in its sonic palette, ranging from harshly distorted synth-peaks, cinematic soundscapes, all the way to avant-garde contemporary classical, and jazz music.
a shuffling mix of acoustic guitar riffs, licks, natural percussion and of course razs well known melancholic vocal lines all come together to generate a country folk feeling of the 60s. a dampened kick drives the energy deep and harmonicas seep into our minds and set our soul on fire. a fresh track for a hot summer day on the lake. acid pauli takes the track and acidizes it by adding, yep, acid lines and a very direct kick. the track gains more of a main time vibe, heightened energy and deeper bass allow this track to hold its own in a variety of set styles. the final mix is an open air anthem delivered from the sorry entertainers m. rux and lotti. using percussion of the same natural flavor and incorporating dirty synth lines, the two produce a heavier mix worthy of both dancefloors and home listening.
raz ohara brings his unique style to kindisch, in the form of the >see it coming< ep. raz holds true to his style of layering ghostly vocals with haunting melodies coupled with ambient percussive elements. we begin the ep with its title track >see it coming<, a colorful blend of melancholic tones on a chilled canvas of percussion. as a perpetual melody drives, delicately laid vocals narrate the journey to the subconscious. next up we get >deeper<, as raz brings out the bass on this one. dissonance and vocal chops harmonize over a heavy kick
raz ohara and his odd orchestra return for their second album for get physical. >ii< is the follow up album to the critically acclaimed self titled raz ohara & the odd orchestra cd that is considered being one of the album highlights in 2008. its a warm, organic collection of avant-garde, open-hearted pop music which positively teems with life, a forest of pleasures and possibilities which youll want to lose yourself in indefinitely.
>ii< is certainly less melancholic than its predecessor – its imbued with good feeling, energised by the rhythms and cadences of summer and the great outdoors - but its not euphoric, there is an underlying note of caution, of trepidation. this emotional mix is what makes the record so powerful, especially when allied to a similarly ambiguous musical mix: which imperceptibly melds folk, classic pop, electro-acoustic experimentation and modernist electronics. 10 beautiful songs plus a special download (code included in the artwork) of the single >miracle< make this album a perfect journey through the winter days.
remixes by kollektiv turmstrasse, noze & apparat !! raz ohara and the odd orchestra received critical acclaim for their self titled album released earlier this year. they may have not been the inventors of their unique style, but the danish patrick rasmussen and his german cohort oliver doerell have certainly helped to redefined the idea of what an electronic musical album can, could and should be. just as artists such as bjork, portishead and booka shade have done so before them. following up their first album single, kisses, this is offering with four other tracks from the album that get the remix treatment courtesy of apparat, kollektiv turmstrasse, nôze and raz himself. it was only a matter of time before one of razs tracks got the 4x4 treatment. kollektiv turmstrasse have showed respect and kept the spirit of the original alive. keeping the original guitar and vocal arrangement intact while simply adding a little bump and shake to the mix. raz shows us that things can be better the second time around, as he continues to proclaim his, love for mrs. rhodes. although he does not trade in his melodies for a kick and snare, they are certainly more prevalent in this dramatized mix complete with arpeggiated synths and additional sound effects. hopefully, this time he will win her heart
superb minimal electronic techhouse with raz ohara vocals very similar to prince !! , plus hot remixes by jayrope s soultiger !!, pier bucci & smash tv!!
OUTRO TEMPO II - ELECTRONIC AND CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FROM BRAZIL 1984-1996 (2LP)
2x12 Inch 27.05.19
outro tempo ii: electronic and contemporary music from brazil, 1984-1996 is the second installment of music from memorys brazilian series. this volume picks up where the first outro tempo left off, shedding light on a new wave of experimentalism that emerged in brazil in the late 1980s and 1990s. the twenty tracks collected uncover another area of brazilian music that looked to the future for inspiration. this time it drifts beyond the rainforest and into the pulsating heart of brazil’s great cities, where it meets a generation of young artists eager to radically change the face of contemporary brazilian music. in outro tempo ii the avant garde and pop worlds meld in a haze of percussion and electronics. it presents another uncompromising and magnetic reinterpretation of the limits of brazilian music. outro tempo ii is compiled again by john gómez and features original artwork by alice quaresma.
after putting the band on the map with their first ep two years ago, the band feathered sun has grown into a life of its own. the more live sets they have played, the better they have defined their style. they are spearheading a brand of sound healing music abstractly narrative, always poetic, sometimes flirting with darkness but always perfectly produced to carry the audience into their own world. feathered sun are the collaborative experiment of nu, jo.ke, raz ohara, chris schwarzwaelder, iannis ritter and acid pauli johannes laumer. each have active and flourishing solo artist careers, albeit still have time to collaborate with one another. the six-strong collective are a close-knit troupe who are primarily based in berlin and lima, peru. live improvisation is ultimately what brought the feathered sun project to life - they are open about their laidback, impromptu approach and this is apparent throughout this ep. side a was primarily crafted in peru by chris schwarzwaelder and jo.ke with raz ohara’s mesmerising vocals. the end material was then sent to nu in berlin who crafted two tracks out of it. the ‘bulbo’ ep shows a willingness to explore different approaches within the collective and the music showcases their long-standing affiliation. it is a downtempo ep that has immaculate instrumentation, dreamy pads and brooding vocals throughout. this is intertwined with organic sounds and moody atmospheric melodies, gives the release a timeless and emotive ambience.
