während malermeister ihr fachgebiet über ihr lebenswerk definieren, definieren kevin martin und dylan carlson aka the bug respektive earth ihr genre jeweils seit mehr als 20 jahren selbst. dabei verbindet sie ihre gemeinsames interesse fast schon die besessenheit für das extreme. sie begeben sich auf die suche, begutachten und brechen mit vorherrschenden grenzen zwischen dem schönen und unschönen, dem minimum und maximum, dem licht und der dunkelheit und machen dabei musik, die aufregender nicht sein könnte. earth und sein gründer dylan carlson, tauchten in den frühen neunzigern das erste mal mit ihrem sub pop release -earth 2- auf der bildfläche auf. mit langsamen, verzerrten, dumpfen und minimalistischen riffs war ihr debüt der entwurf dessen, was dylan zu dieser zeit mit ambient metal beschrieb, ein stil wie er auf seinem letzten southern lord release primitive and deadly weiter vorangetrieben wurde.
