time for a little neck bulging, slimy skin hip-slinking summer fun as a true craftsman steps from the studio shadows: jay shepheard, who’s back with a track that’s so infectious if you licked its back you’d trip for weeks. prepare yourselves for ‘bullfrogging’: wry funk, warmth and humanised technoid soul. taking a vocal texture then processing, harmonising and splicing the spawn out of it, jay’s precision balance of electronic hustle and anthromorphised action has all the hallmarks for a summer anthem. ‘early doors’ follows suit and there’s a massive clue in the title… soft-focused, warm, rolling and laced with textured chimes, it’s definitely tailored for those key transitions between warm-up and second gear. deep, trippy but coded with a hookiness that grabs rather than soothes, once again it’s classic shepheard but with a revitalised 2017 twist. hey, he didn’t lock himself away in the studio for twelve months for nothing, right? neither did jay’s long-time friend and neighbour mark henning, a man who hasn’t taken on a remix since the early 2010s. his return to the remix game is as poignant and powerful as jay’s return to releases as he removes around 70 percent of the frog and maximises the bullishness of the elements, creating a relentless tribal slammer of a version that still retains the warmth and soul of jay’s original. two returns to action, three killer tracks, one label you can always count on as your friend and no frogs harmed during the whole process. we’re pulling out some serious stops here.

the incomparable mark henning blasts back on soma with yet another dose of machine funk as he drops the jaguar ep. mark has consistently been one of soma’s top artists due to his amazing sound design and keen knowledge of exactly what make a top dance floor track and this latest ep really shows him operating at his highest level.

berlin based mark henning continues a series of self released 12 s on his own imprint swing recordings. next up is a re-issue of two of his most famous bassline-heavy tracks to date - trojan and sin city plus a new unreleased track.

title track joyride kicks things off with a straight up 909 beat, complete with scifi sweeps and classic wood block percussion, quickly working its way into an very subtle groove with every element working effectively to keep it fully funk laden. sideways completes the a side of the release and gets going right from the beginning. pumping percussion takes hold and hits the ground running before a perfectly weighted synth hook lashes over the top with henning playing with the synths lfo to creative effect. dust takes things down a notch as swirling pads drape themselves over a serious 909 beat. henning lets this one loop out, letting the subtle variations in the synths do the work as the 909 holds the beat solid and reminiscent of early berlin/detroit dub techno crossovers. mars attacks closes of the ep and does so in particularly fine fashion. a more broken beat affair this time from henning and he really works his machines into a sonic warfare of bass tones and tweaked out synths that sear through the crashing percussion workout.

mark henning makes a welcome return to soma records with the sublime sunday slide. a multi faceted release that definitely has something for everyone! title track sunday slide is fantastic, deep affair. a simplistic house beat is slowly added to by well-crafted synth work that opens and flows perfectly throughout the track. on the flip, youre digging into me, is a catchy house number with a baseline that is sure to stick in your head!

after a lengthy break mark henning returns with his new label swing and four on-point tracks. *stash house* kicks things off with a crisply produced groove with snatched male vocals and rounded bass keeping the swing high. *exit acid* ups the energy levels with an acidic tinged b-line proving a grimier feel whilst flip sides *james hughes blues* is all about the breakdown, a neat synth line and huge bass tones lending it a more anthemic edge. lastly *the horror* opts for a lower key ride, fuller male vocal imbuing the track with a sleazier feeling.

mark henning is back! back on cityfox! a classic acapella and marks distinctive sound collide, result-ing in a huge tune, sounding old school and fresh at the same time. not just the vocals are telling a story here, the synths and bassline add their part to complete the track. the second original trojan is the secret weapon and club bomb, the dark side of the release, because too much sunshine is never healthy. afrilounge take it a step deeper and its big string melody sounds as clean as and sparkles like the sunrise itself. the 1998 edit incorperates the rhythms and vibes of classic house and techno from the era when it all began. thick, groovy basslines and pulsing pads laid out over infectious percussion make this track an instant classic.

here we go with mark-henningÆs 2nd ep on frankie recs, 3 years after his promising first strike on the label. a two tracker ep titled ôvick for president epö - we start off with the a-side ôbiggity giggityö - a track of pure madness! comprising a mix of quirky sounds and distord harmonics synths, this is a great example of markÆs ability to combine both a solid groove and a dark atmosphere at the same time.. this song definitely kills it on the floor! on the flipside ômonsterö is even darker and more mental - combining subtle synths arrangements and bleepy fxs sounds itÆs perfect for late sessionsà two beautifully sinister, outstanding cuts!

asd008 sees the return of alex krueger and a welcome one at that! this oneÆs 5 tracks deep (including a digital exclusive) and includes a pair of fine remixes from londoner-in-berlin, mark henning, ôblasted bitchö is tigerskin at his best. the title cut is a feast of sonic trickery, with sounds playing off each other beautifully to create a wide, dense soundscape which, paired with clipped percussion, clever dancefloor arrangement, evil laugh & crude vocal sample this one delivers tough. henning, a man known for his abilities with sound design himself, takes a darker route with his interpretation which, while still driving, is more of a heads down late night affair û riddled with oddball delays and some unnerving vox efx. ôwhat theö takes a turn to the darkside, moody, sharp, reveb laden and pulsing, the track is real heavy business watch out for that unholy belgian hardcore synth riff a la ômentasmö, thereÆs a real æmomentÆ in there. to round off the original cuts. responseö continues seeing tigerskin provide a straighter groove but one which displays some sterling keyboard work and strong break. finally, henning provides another remix of the title track as the digital only addition all too important these days. futuristic deep, tech-house is about as close as a description anyone needs for this superb final piece of an equally superb package.
