after a temporary break away from music to work on other projects foreign concept is back with the skit city ep, the first in a series of new releases.
inspired by his long time friend jack ramsay s new graphic novel of the same name, the title track, featuring mancunian mc fox, creates the perfect sonic backdrop to the intricate aesthetic of the skit city book from which the artwork is taken. watch out for the video coming soon.
a very welcome return to the scene complete with a beautiful collaboration with halogenix and a killer remix by lsb.
the producer behind the last years huge hit ‘the view” teams up again with the same vocal duo to equally great effect. it’s the lead single taken from his forthcoming debut long player. over the past 3 years luke beavon’s music has gained many admirers in the drum and bass world. his musicality, passion, ear for detail and production ability all shine through on his releases. these two tracks are no exception. missing you is real heartbreaker, with lyrics written and performed by drs and tyler daley it’s a beautiful soul song for the all the people that have lost someone close. tumult on the other hand is rough, fierce and devastating and shows the darker side of luke’s artillery. we at soul:r couldn’t be more proud to present you with this single and the forthcoming lp...
the fourfit series from soul:r gathers pace with a second release that is packed with label debuts as lsb, anile, fd and kid drama all step up to deliver some high class productions for the contemporary drum and bass selectors.
last years overthinking ep has become an underground monster, cementing lsbs place in the record boxes, cd walltes and usb sticks of musical d&b lovers worldwide.
enei steps up and re-works overthinking, adding his trademark heavy beats and chest shattering bass while still maintaining the musical goodness of the original.
due to popular demand for the track to see a vinyl release, lsb has given this city a dj friendly 2013 rework which retains all the goodness of the ep version and adds a little extra energy.
support from friction – radio 1, crissy criss – 1xtra, london elektricity – hospital podcast, nu:tone, drumsound, tc, s.p.y and more ...
in 2011 swiss run demand records has proven something that hundreds of start-up labels every year fail to: that you can start a successful record label from scratch without compromising on the quality of the music. in an ocean of mediocre imprints and teeth-grating noise slapped together on home studio set ups, this label demands more – and the support they have received from brookes brothers, dj hype, dj marky, netsky, drumsound & bassline smith, the mighty ukf drum & bass channel and more is proof positive that demand records is doing something right. their next release sees them do something else right, sign a single from luke beavon a.k.a lsb. having released sporadically since 2002, lsb is hardly new to the game, but this year sees him at his production best with a fresh set of releases. straight out of the box is >subdued<, an impeccably produced slice of melancholic drum & bass that kiss fm’s dj hype describes as >ice cold<. gradually building and growing, this is a track that slowly creeps its way into your head and then doesnt let go. gentle bass trickery and sweeping atmospherics are the order of the day and this one is sure to provide a momentary moment of calm amongst the d&b minutia. >beep< doesnt disappoint either as lsb creates an equally good, but altogether different, vibe. tiny scatterings of drums are underlain with percussive energy that roll the track along as expertly placed sound effects intersperse with precision and a deep and deadly sub bass ensures peoples ribcages will be rattling.
a limited edition latin soul brothas fusion rework session! 1st is a remix slept on by maws louie vega (who waited too long to put it out), a rendition of hector lavoes >mi gente< that is absolutely amazing. on the flip, santanas >dance sister dance (baila mi hermana)< gets reworked for a big dancefloor tune. highly recommended!
the locke saints band was a high school band from watts califorinia led by reggie andrews. also known as the msingi workshop, the locke saints band created deep jazz/funk and modern soul. similar to kashmere stage band, there is an energy and mood to the music that is raw yet focused. everlasting love blends soul and funk nicely with an incredible vocal performance, originally recorded by rufus and chaka khan. this 7 inch is limited to 300 copies only!
after their amazing debut release original highway delight and the follow up f.o.g. that were supported by the crme de la crme in the scene, here is the much anticipated third one. definitely a biggie in the nu disco scene.
bxl003 is the third release of the artist-run brussels based label bxl. this third release by simon halsberghe features a collaboration with sagat (real name wiet lengeler), who previously released on the brussels’ label vlek and had his music included in the fabric mixes of both ben klock and joris voorn. the track is called the set-up and is a relentless sawtooth rave tune that finds it’s balance between the heydays of belgian techno and more contemporary ‘hi-fi’ attitudes towards functional yet idiosyncratic dance tracks. on the b-side space tom sounds is a deeper and more hypnotic trip with lush broad pads that provide a space for the mind as well as sonic pressure on the body. the last track, snared, takes things into breakbeat territory. with razor sharp snares and a pulsating baseline this track lives somewhere in the venn diagram overlap between rave, front 242 and an air raid siren going off.
walter gibbons, a true master of the mix, a disco legend, a pioneer of dance music. theres literally very few who can lay claim to progressing the artform of studio mixing and technique than the late gibbons. his contribution to contemporary music cannot be understated, first as a dj where his drum laced experimentation captured the ears and minds of his peers and the dancers, then later as a mixer and studio genius where he continued on his quest. often fixated on the percussion and breaks within records his versions would often dive into spaced out, dubby and stripped back territory that very few of his peers were even contemplating at that time, fervently reconstructing the tracks themselves and often the time, space and dancefloor within which the record was being played. a true original, gibbons was behind many of the definitive versions of the classics, his unique style often catapulting records that were just fine in their original form into brand new colourful, cosmic interpretations that flourished sonically and rhythmically with brand new sounds that bristled with vision.

jocelyn brown should need no introduction at this stage, one of the uss most respected vocalists famed for bringing the gospel edge into contemporary r&b and soul music. brown was the voice behind the celebrated disco and boogie outfit inner life, the focus of this stars of salsoul volume. cutting 2 lps for the label in the early 1980s, inner life came strong with club hit after hit, working with the top producers, mixers, arrangers and studios of the day the group were gaining cult status with their records becoming the taste of the dancefloors at the garage, the loft, the warehouse and everywhere and anywhere else in-between! it s no surprise then, that these records are still coveted by music lovers and djs today, classic status bestowed upon this most soulful of catalogues. featured here are those hits, in their full unedited 12inch glory. listen to the classics as nature intended, you won t regret it. a truly essential package for the die-hard disco aficionado or for those who are exploring this most important movement in dance music for the first time. curated with the full input and backing of salsoul records and carefully selected to reflect the truly timeless nature of the music contained within. for listening, for dancing, for turning on a party! remastered by optimum mastering. artwork & design by million dollar disco. fully authorised and approved by salsoul records.
legendary australian disco-fiend late nite tuff guy turns up the heat on the equally legendary salsoul records with 3 absolutely stellar reworks of some bonafide classics. somehow, lntg manages to tweak these old-school recordings and injects a thoroughly contemporary edge into them, making them sound brand new. featured here are 3 stone cold salsoul monsters, all respectfully handled and edited with care - first choice s uber-classic doctor love & love having you around (penned by stevie wonder & his then wife syreeta, no less!) and double exposure s anthemic everyman all go under the knife in the best possible way! beautifully mastered and featuring special black & gold salsoul label artwork this special record store day ep will undoubtedly be a collectors item! one for the disco heads right here!
bxl002 is the second release of the artist-run brussels based label bxl. this second release by simon halsberghe features the dark discoïd black tape mass on the a-side. while the title refers to the tape delay echo s used in the production, it s the groove pushed forward by the pulsing bass line and the clap that give it that distinct dark disco vibe. on the b-side machine wailing sounds like an incessant siren. the rest of the elements in the track all push and pull around this hypnotic siren, giving it context and power. the last track, grey over white takes the hypnosis deeper with a deep fizzy bass line, resonant drone and crisp hihats. at the end of the track additional percussive elements puncture the drone to give way to a polyrhythmic work out.
shep pettibone - a name that commands the greatest of respect from djs, diggers, dancers and music lovers across the galaxy. a name that has been emblazoned across so many club classics that the accompanying discography is simply dizzying. the underground disco of groups like aurra, first choice and candido and early 80s experimental dubbed out club cuts of cult outfits like nv, alisha and carol williams and even the heady pop chart successes of bands like level 42, the pet shop boys, jermaine jackson and many more, have all benefitted from pettibones prowess behind the mixing boards. a true musical legend and the man who literally crafted the sounds and styles of almost 2 decades of club music back to back, shep pettibones pedigree can never be called in to question.
phillys double exposure have undoubtedly earned the title of disco legends, their music has long been part of the heartbeat with numerous classics under their belts. their mighty release ten per cent was the first commercially issued 12 single and subsequently ushered in the notion of the format as a go to in the clubs and among djs. originally thought of as a fad in a world where the 45 was king, this 12 release unknowingly changed the direction of dance music and music promotions practically overnight. disco history indeed.
surely no other orchestra can claim the dancefloor kudos of these guys - the salsoul orchestra. theyve literally played on, shaped, crafted and executed numerous classics since their inception in 1975. as salsoul records in-house band they were quite literally, instrumental, in the personality and sound of one of dance musics most famous and respected labels.
yet another solid gold modern reimagining of the mighty loleatta holloway, this time her infamous 1977 smash hit & run goes under the knife and is tweaked to devastating effect by 2 of chicago s finest modern day editors - jamie 326 & cratebug. anyone with even a passing interest in disco or house will be more than familiar with these 2 guys names. having edited and remixed numerous cuts in their own original ways, they take this all-time salsoul classic and strip it right back to the essence, to the very basics, and in the process create a total dancefloor weapon. this edit originally came out a few years ago (2013) on a compilation that showcased the new wave of contemporary talent emanating from the windy city and naturally it was one of the cuts that stood out, finding favour with a wide variety of dj s across the board from motor city drum ensemble, todd terry, jeremy underground paris, theo parrish and more. drawing comparisons with paperclip people s anthemic throw from 1994 in the way it snatches a killer loop from hit & run s bassline, hit it & quit it is a monster, a record you ll literally play over and over and over again, a relentless disco juggernaut that oozes power. it made perfect sense for this legit single-sided reissue 12- to come out on salsoul records, the home of loleatta holloway s finest material and all of her classics. this limited reissue has been made in conjunction with jamie 3:26 & cratebug and salsoul records, 100% sanctioned and lovingly re-presented for your dancing pleasure. this one is hot. sleep at your peril!
