a young french artist based out of paris from corsica, it is from behind her drumkit that charlotte debuts in music. with her first ep, she plunges us in her music s universe. her first track, 777, eponym of the vinyl, along with largo, reflects her melancholiac side combined with an acoustic breakbeat rhythm borrowed from her 90 s influenced. the other tracks, mela & saint marc, show her love for a brutal dancefloor with acid wave inspirations.
charlois welcomes back label inaugurator dollkraut, this time in company with de ambassade. the label grants permission for them to share this 10 and create their own world, so they can coexist and share stories about lost love, condolence and isolation. on the a side they come together in a dark room anthem about sex, lust and worship. it oozes with cold, heart-stabbing melancholia, yet carries the artists idiosyncratic warm and crunchy sound. the flip side scratches open the wounds left by the first song and sees dollkraut drop his soft touch. what follows is a hypnotic voodoo track, summoning dark spirits with unsettling synths, shamanic vocals and tribal jewish harp.
charlotte de witte continues to establish herself as a driving force on the contemporary techno scene with the healer, her second ep on seminal british imprint novamute. the four-tracker comes after the belgian has fully broken through with a dark, dense and driving sound that is proudly unrelenting. her meteoric rise has come off the back of a series of huge productions, plus standout sets at key festivals and clubs all around the world. charlottes fresh and innovative sound is immediately laid bare on opener the healer, with eight minutes of spine-tingling, hypnotic techno. the sleek drums and icy hi-hats soon cast their spell, as well-crafted synths unfold up top to bring real emotion. silence is another slice of tunnel vision techno with perfectly designed drums rolling on and synths peeling off the groove. it is trance inducing and otherworldly, with eerie voices adding to the all-consuming atmosphere. then comeskuda, a track built on monstrous kicks that hit hard and drive forward with real force. filtered vocals bring character, and sharp edged percussion grows ever louder to take the track, and the club, to the next level. last of all, song of the wood nymphs shows another side to the producer with three minutes of suspensory synths and expansive ambient sounds that are filled with drama and tension.

charlotte de witte presents a new ep on the recently relaunched seminal british imprint novamute. it arrives after three acclaimed 2017 eps from the rising belgian artist, whose residencies and packed touring schedule have fuelled her reputation as one to watch. brussels ep is out on 12 inch vinyl , on january 5th and features three menacing techno cuts employing impeccable production technique and moody atmospherics. the title track is a restrained burner with stripped back beats over sweltering pads and vocals. control pairs distorted speech with a whirlwind of rumbling bass frequencies, whilst look around you brandishes trance inspired crescendos with hypnotic percussion. novamute, a subsidiary of the legendary mute label, rose to prominence in the early 90s amidst growing demand for techno in the uk and went on to release classic tracks and albums from an array of coveted artists. in 2017 they relaunched with eps from nicolas bougaïeff and terence fixmer.

bionda e lupo are like little you ll have heard before, a boy/girl band like no other. synth wave is fed a line of modern alienation, delusory disco to a disdainful drum beat, house emptied and ridiculed. rhythms are stark, melodies are as mechanical as the lyrics. -zug der vogel- is sparse, vocals intertwine in an empty embrace whilst bars sparkle. -twoi glasza- is more playful. bright words shimmer against sweeping strings. the past is parodied across the ep but nowhere more so than in -die kinder aus dem park.- a former classic dug out before being peppered by machine gun percussion. the stilted rhyme of -eckstein- closes, a ballad of bittersweet images and lost hopes.

the ep starts with the german vocalized protest song -uberall polizei, nirgendwo gerechtigkeit-, an ebm inspired track which reminds us of the early 80s belgium artists like the neon judgement and nitzer ebb. on the flip the riot continues with -kriegdienstverweigerer-, a hypnotic neo-electronic jam with rattling synths, psychedelic baselines and a repetitive robotic vocoder on top. the ep ends with the title track -unify-, a deep cold cinematic floor burner.
mastermaster kicks things off and drives a shifting sequence through a lo-fi break, plodding piano notes and a clipped, lively vocal hook before -bruce wayne- melds spring reverb and squelching flangers to treat guitar riffs and more 80s drums. eerily wobbling synths shimmer over head before -hornet green- drives a sprung kick under tense, soundtrack synth tones and a sandy shuffle as a cinematic pursuit is rendered. -valium- then sets sultry vocals floating through more hazy drum breaks and softly shifting chords. rhythmic variation and more vintage effects wade in and round off off a refreshing package of rich and intriguing gems and another fine addition to the charlois series.
gable & grant are joined by harlow in this next instalment of the diaries volumes. on the third release they explore more rolling, pacy grooves whilst still maintaining that familiar brand of melancholic, washed out nostalgia. the b side here is a proper floor burner with a choice vocal sample mixed in for good measure.
