paul blackford returns to cpu this time donning a 7inch downtempo tip. light years vinyl takes 2 of the highlights from the accompanying lp, all of which demonstrate his versatility in expressing his hip hop and funk influences from an electronic music perspective. on first pass you might think you are listening to nightmares on wax, but without the heavy sampling as blackford favours creating his sounds from scratch. comparisons to photeks hidden camera can be made in terms of atmosphere but keeping things within a slower trip hop framework. light years is for chilling out, but theres a strong temptation to mix hip-hop vocals over the top due to the lps solid instrumental foundations.
one third of london modular alliance and sought after electro artist pip williams (aka phil ventre) graces cpu with some acid drenched electro-funk. over driven 808 percussion and 303 basslines slice through this ep with searing accuracy creating a highly effective dj weapon. ventre’s jedi like synthesis skills are inspiring, with sublime sculpted leads and sci-fi bleeps rhythmically scattered throughout, all 4 tracks give you an insight into his synchronised sub-oscillating mind.

plant43 aka emile facey returns to cpu with his second ep for the sheffield imprint, and brings more of his ultra-refined electro to the table. surgical pads, robotic x0x beats and melodic basslines fuse the tracks into faceys signature science-lab machine funk. facey has been very busy since his last outing on cpu back in 2013, with an lp on shipwrec, and ep s on semantica, ac records and frustrated funk. he is showing no sign of slowing down and weightless in the void pushes his sound even further into the future

humanoid x is cpus deepest foray into detroit techno so far, from blixaboy aka mwanza dover texas based artist, friend of cygnus and very much part of the local electro scene. dover presents an album influenced by the pioneers of the hypnotic groove. on first pass you’ll find elements of krautrock through to the belleville three, all with finely crafted arrangements that reveal themselves in more detail on each listen. a cyberpunk theme runs throughout as blade runner-esque synths wash over the album evoking late night electric-city noodle restaurant contemplation. blixaboy has selected 4 of the more dj friendly tracks from the album for the vinyl e.p. treatment.
federico leocata is an italian audio-visual artist who has exhibited in athens, thessaloniki and catania. later expanding his art into the field of sound based analysis of the human psyche. first discovered by heinrich mueller (dopplereffekt, drexciya), federico released his first ep in 2010 for the belgian imprint wemè records, attracting further interest from labels like frustrated funk and last known trajectory.

it was only a matter of time before the prolific electro stalwart scape one aka kurt baggaley made an appearance on cpu. scape ones penchant for sci-fi is reflected in recombination an electronic adventure through space time, stopping briefly for an atomic war. kurts vast experience and collection of analogue synthesizers can be heard to full effect with crushing bass, bubbling leads and arpeggiated sweeps throughout. strong artistic influences on the ep from john foxx, vangelis to autechre (incunabula-esque). all in all a cocktail for the perfect electro cut.
