in 2017, benedikt frey released his breathtaking debut album with the esp institute, artificial, and now as we finally come up for air, we’re more than proud to offer an eclectic collection of remixes that’s nothing short of essential. side a leads with h for hysteria remixed by a beloved hero, nicolas chaix a.k.a. i:cube, one of the most prolific and respected electronic artists paris has to offer. his touch is considered and elegant, imbuing the track with a tasteful 303+808 backbone to support an array of patiently floating melodies and angelic vocal samples. following this, tolouse low trax of du&#776,,,,,sseldorf’s infamous salon des amateurs remixes the same track, stripping instrumentation down to a skeletal palette of bass guitar and stabbing percussive punctuations, chopped up inna minimalist stylee that has become his beat-making signature. side b leads with a remix by another du&#776,,,,,sseldorfer, dj normal 4, whose re-imagination of private crimes takes us for an even more menacing ride, half-timing the tempo and skillfully rolling out a barrage of jungle snares from rave days of yore. closing the release is the most aggressive remix of them all, a bonafide techno beatdown of the same track by dalo, the co-producing artist to whose haunting vocals lace the original version. her dark vision opens with sparse industrial drums that blossom into a driving assault of raw machinery, definitely not for the faint-of-heart. an all-around solid release here, fun for all the family... more than just the tip!

there is a sense of urgency increasingly infecting the human condition, fragmenting our attention span, accelerating our needs and often influencing our motives when making creative decisions. the result is a lack of dynamics, there is no ebb or flow, its “go” time, all the time. electronic music is one of the clearest examples of a widening division between great art created in a deeply imaginative vaccum and the soulessly formulaic and branded product that serves the impatient masses. what draws the esp institute to benedikt frey is his ability to operate on the fringe, outside the constructs artists constantly channel themselves into - his art speaks a pure language that is realized by any means necessary, a process devised solely to articulate his own message, one delivered with patience, never rushed nor dictated by the outside world. artificial was written and produced over two years, tirelessly sculpted into a sequence abstract pieces that are fiercely independent but accumulate layers of meaning when collaged. it is electronic and rhythm-based, but never reliant on any prescribed instrumentation, arrangement or expecatation. this is our idea of well conceived and executed album, not simply a collection of tracks but a complex narrative that unfolds over peaks and valleys, pulling the listener into emotional corners before leaving a residual impression. some may describe music very well in words, but there is always something lost in translation - a story only the music itself can tell.

one of the most unconventional techno tracks which were released during the last years. catchy pop like and unbelivieable dark at the same time. h-friend starts at the peak and then progressively reduces itself into an intro that is actually the outro of this song. benedikt frey s arresting out of here was the second entry of our blanc series. originally a vinyl-only limited release, now the track gets a fresh new treatment in the hands of two mainstays of european techno: roman flugel and simon haydo. flugel s cosmic disco drama rework lives up to its name, maintaining the noir disco spirit of the original track but infusing it with tension-building sequences and strings that give it an extra mischievous twist. our favorite frankfurter also straightens the rhythmic skeleton and adds shuffling shakers to make it a relentless dancefloor weapon. haydo s remix delves into a more dismal terrain, transforming the vocals into haunted echoes, adding esoteric synths and topping it all with razor-sharp percussion in what sounds like a storm of ice asteroids falling into a lake of steel. the 12inch comes in a beautiful sleeve featuring an exclusive illustration by barcelona-based artist pau lopez and design by arnau pi.

continuing a sublime run of form for the label, the fourth outing on the lopasura imprint, is yet another classy trio of heady, analogue machine laden masterpieces. opening up with “out of the fog’, the familiar acidic arpeggio and crisp hits we’ve grown to love from benedikt frey, dance unwittingly along before being opened up by long, cinematic pads drenching the track with an emotion and grandeur so synonymous with his music. complimenting the a side, the looming intent ‘wolves’ adopts from the off evolves quickly into a driving, hypnotic and beautifully crafted piece that’s a true heads down, eyes-shut techno battle weapon. rounding off the ep on the b side is the exceptional ‘lights’. an unsettling, caliginous whir of industrial drones balances the tribal, percussive elements almost depicting a lost ship crashing over the swells of the ocean as it clings on to futile hope of finding the lighthouse. it meanders and threatens before an incredible synth hook ebbs in and takes over momentarily, before calmly simmering as the storm passes. never before has love pain sunshine and rain been more perfectly encompassed.

our third release untitled emerges as a moody four tracker born in matteo luis home studio. the title track is the driest start off there could be. it monotonously heads for the tracks climax in manner of a cyclone, a straight stomper that evolves its full strength within its last solution, surprising with an acidic and dubby face that makes you want to dive right into the dashing structure of its last minutes.

benedikt frey crafts a musical aesthetic that (much like the esp institute) might only be seen in its true form from a birds-eye view—a whole greater than the sum of its parts. his playful indifference to genre specifics and pre-prescribed instrumentation or production techniques makes for a loose and refreshing collection of work, and this debut for the esp institute, the lobbyist, serves up an incongruous three tracks so bewildering and narcotic we’re already impatiently fiending for more. on side a, the title track is no less than a medieval assault. led by a stomping war drum and a blasting bass synth that might literally have caught the studio on fire, an erratic array of clanking percussion, hi-hats and cymbals push us into a sinister corner where his whispering chant grants us the smallest bit of humanity before continuing with the beating. on side b, cupids delight (ft tcb) and gravel both explore variations on beauty—the former in a blur of ghost-like vocals smeared in harmony across a low-slung machine drums, and the latter evoking a tropical affair gone psychedelic, complete with drawn-out disorienting marimba and ritual clave/tom arrangements. welcome home brother benedikt, what took you so long?

can t joke with dexy is the opener here and is a bumpy, edgy house cut with tense and nervy keys jangling above a roughshod drum line. it grows ever more dark and comic and things roll on before faith is a more breezy, airy house groove. the drums here dance a nimble dance, thin synths and emotive chords all come in rich layers and a lo-fi percussive line proves how frey can conjure up idiosyncratic sounds with ease. like its title suggest, ghosts is a hauntingly atmospheric track with icy hi hats, pixel thing and hugely melancholic chords and harmonic bells all adding a sense of calm and serenity to turbulent drums deep down below. lastly, scale is a sub 100bpm crawler with fat elastic synths strung up between lazy kicks. two filtered spoken word lines add plenty of weirdness to this soupy bit of cosmic seduction and round out an ep that is stuffed with fresh ideas and great sonic invention.

ynk’s 2nd ep for polytone is much more than a continuation of his earlier records on polytone and tenderpark. instead, the young artist wants his new ep to be seen as an autonomous work which draws on a multitude of different materials. this leads to a very fluid texture of samples, synths and drum machines and a very detailed structure at first sight - however, all elements fit into each other very nicely and make way for the bigger picture if you take a step back.

bad animal animal is a label devoted to underground house and techno with an approach that welcomes experimentation but never loses sight of the dancefloor. set up by alland byallo and kenneth scott it has already released music from influential producers including smash tv, xosar, mosca, dop and varoslav along with many others. now on its tenth release, label boss kenneth scott scott marks his second appearance on the label with this new ep consisting of two tracks. one original track entitled if the rain stops these ruthless acts plus a remix from benedikt frey.

the boldly titled new release on nous klaer might not sound like what you expect. trance unlimited is a four-track-run full of kicks and curiosities, crafted by dj/musician/label owner benedikt frey. though this versatile producer is new to the label, he sounds perfectly at ease, providing us with a warm and balanced 12 inch for dancefloor fun and bumpy road trips. after releases on hivern discs, live at robert johnson and his own love pain sunshine & rain, benedikt frey explores new rhythmic ranges and phasing patterns on this ep. whilst all tracks are dancefloor-ready, it s the a2 that s the raving giant: trance unlimited.

benedikt frey heads this latest offering from the batti batti label, teaming up with jonas.san for -girl from venus-, which pair the former s signature raw drums with the latter s outtakes of muted trumpet. complementing this, batti batti s own owen jay & melchior sultana lay down a typically deep atmospheric houser with a few twists and hidden melodies in the shape of title track tribal roots and the 12inch is further embellished by productions from debutant lars behrenroth and mexican duo romeo c & alhan g who have previously been featured on a digital batti batti release.

mystery man l.f.t. delivers the second ep for woodwork. his poignant debut wood002 includes three original tracks and a remix by benedikt frey. a1 is a dreamy rhodes journey roughened up by distorted 808 sounds. a2 is a melodic house track with a bubbly bassline juxtaposed against crunchy drums. on the flipside, b1 will take you into a laid-back acid house trip fueled by tons of escorial. benedikt frey then twists the track into a trippy techno journey on b2.

dear madam, dear sir, ramona is ready to reveal yet another manmade mystery to humanity – *reframe* by benedikt frey. browsing through freys back catalogue, one thing has always been certain with every new record released – freys music has always been mystical, was working in different layers and has never been only a further development of the record before.

when something new starts it s because there s a need to wander further, to cut deeper. mrt is a result of this. for their first record the newly formed division of lux rec teamed up with benedikt frey. three perfect tracks to start the journey, build foundations and describe the far off obscure fringes of the mrt universe. the introduction of portal, a dreary number, together with telamon, acidic march, and stereobate, relentless physical techno music, portrays the musical range and qualities of benedikt, and sets the path for mrt.

tamed monsters ep is an inaugural release of the new record label pandora. new imprint will focus on ambient sounds, music for home-listening and unique artwork. the va includes works from german producer benedikt frey, russian producers shine grooves, unbroken dub, and an ambient group kurvenschreiber. each artist offers a different sound, which lets the music evolve like a story and makes a nice combination of dreamy ambience and mesmerizing repetitive beats.

love pain sunshine & rain aka lopasura, on only its second release is evidently becoming a force to be reckoned with. benedikt freys distinct rugged aesthetics toy with some conceptual ideas for each contribution, flirting with greek mythologies, romantic legends and the idea of intricate layered meanings and rhetorics for the ep as a whole. coarse kick drums and clattering percussions are used in conjunction with epic industrial and machine-like synth lines, beautifully engineered and held together by the mixed emotions and moody atmospheres present in all three tracks. the genuine and heart-felt intent with frey’s work is undeniable, producing a fine and certain quality that will surely resonate with anyone in favour of the live and raw musical attributes he is skillfully displaying with each new release.

lopasura (love pain sunshine & rain) starts up with a profound record composed by its label-owner benedikt frey. all 3 tracks were deliberately built up with his typical shuffled drum patterns and hypnotic filtering pad structures...

mule electronic happy to start 2011 with this fantastic new artist benedikt frey (aka suedmilch). in the last year, he has joined to sampler 12 inch with vakula, fred p on russian house label ethereal sound. title track on a1 >fairytale< is super deep detroit house sound with smokey male vocal. this track is easily to fascinate the fan of theo parrish or moodymann or even dj koze. this track is one of our favorite songs on mule electronic. all other tracks are also high quality stuff. dont miss this new artist.
