>we came to< is the 4th single by the crystal ark, the developing collaboration between gavin russom & viva ruiz. the song is a dance music rally cry, profound in its bare bones and raw production, and equally for the spanish/english lyrics, which praise ancestors and call out for liberation. the house and dub versions featured on the single were mixed alongside the album version, which will be released later this year as part of the self titled debut lp by the crystal ark on dfa records.

if there is a driving motive at the heart of gavin russoms latest project, the crystal ark, it is to create music that communicates and compels physicality and movement. a listen to the projects first single, aptly named >the city never sleeps<, reveals a track as tireless as the title suggests, and russom as a visionary who crafts invocations to move. with his second release under the crystal ark moniker, russom is just as focused on eliciting movement, but deftly avoids repeating himself. unlike its hypnotic predecessor, which slow burned and subtly seduced listeners to physically respond, >the tangible presence of the miraculous< is explicit in its urgings û a composition of nakedly energetic and urgent inducements to dance.

beranek’s debut album, “sound of danger”, was released on mind expanding records in november 1981. nowhere near as accessible as the previous single, the album fared poorly commercially. withdrawing from the single’s fun, kitsch pop, the album is cool and static, driven by thin rhythm boxes, cold synths, and glacial guitars. taking heavy cues from david bowie, all of the songs are sung in a nasally english accent, a rare occurrence in norway at the time. the lyrics are melancholic, but tinged with paranoia. there are also upbeat tracks that evoke a prog or glam sensibility a la king crimson, alan parsons, or roxy music. all songs have been remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. housed in the original jacket featuring red, black, and white lines that evoke a visualized richter scale designed by monica moltzau. each copy includes a 2-sided 8x11” insert with lyrics and an autographed press photo of beranek.
