‘black lotus’ follows walton’s inclusion on tectonic’s landmark 100th release – riko dan’s ‘hard food’ ep, plus the ‘praying mantis’/ ‘koto riddim’ 12” (also on tectonic) and the ‘taiko’ ep on kaizen – the latter two of which hinted at the album’s sound, but didn’t fully prepare us for the brilliance to come. abstract electronics, grime, dubstep and new styles that don’t even have a name yet coalesce perfectly on this classic in the making. it finds walton at peak power, reaching just as far (if not more so) than anything on the pan, different circles, boxed or tectonic catalogues for pure futurism and new-terrain-traversing brilliance.
manuel göttschings solo project ashra, with blackouts from 1977. the album was written and performed entirely by göttsching on electric guitar, keyboards and defines one of ashras most electronic and danceable recordings of all time.

the new record features all new material from the hyperdub founder and his mc collaborator, and will follow up their 2006 album >memories of the future<. in the years since that release, kode9s sound has evolved considerably, mostly shedding the framework of dubstep for ever new mutations of uk bass music, as heard on his dj kicks or the >you dont wash< ep from last year. in addition to the spaceapes post-apocalyptic rhymes, which have also haunted records by martyn and echologist, the album features chinese mc and producer cha cha. on the final track, kode9 is joined in the studio by brainfeeder beatsmith flying lotus.
hot remix ep from the mighty dimlite. reworking the lotus track to give a whole new vibe to the sultry tones of laura darlington. fly los even been playing this out in his live sets! the bside holds a killer remix of carlos nino (ammon contact/build an ark) & gaby hernandezs >hot heavy heat< - futuristic dancefloor stuff! heavy!
the arrival of label lotus lands first ever lp, in the form of a previously unreleased monster of a project. as youd expect limited to 500. the amazing modern soul music of darwin jones, as recorded in 1978 at sly stones home fortress studio. this lp includes 8 of the heaviest tunes from the full 17 they managed to unearth from tape. tip!
so, you think you have a hard life? you dont know hardship. imagine having to deal with a severe bi-polar personality disorder. not only this, but you are also the vestal chosen by god to be his voice on earth. can you even begin to imagine that kind of pressure? well this is what declaime has to go through every single day. not only does he deal with all of this, but he also manages to be a crazy-voiced west coast badass emcee. to add even more pressure, the trendiest beat-monger of current times, stephen flying lotus bingley has laced said emcee with his best beats since 1983. 2009 starts here!
right from the beginning of track one 77 slightly delayed you just know that this is going to be something special, manuel wastes no time in setting up a great syncopated backing. then the guitar comes in - and what guitar! clean, precise and wonderfully effected. ok, yes i am a fan and have been for over twenty years. so its a joy to pull this album from the shelves in order to write this review. manuel manages to mesh his rhythm and lead playing so well, the rhythm being one of those classic and perfect sounds. this isnt one of those guitar improv work-outs, the listener is left in no doubt that manuel meant to play every note he played. track two midnight on mars, ah - my favourite ashra track ever. its midnight on mars and im there right alongside him. again manuel sets up the lead line perfectly with his mix of synths, drum machine (wasnt it the classic eko rhythm computer?) and wicked guitar. this particular melody has lived in my brain since the first moment i heard it, twenty plus years ago. in fact, everyone ive ever played this track to has commented on it. manuel should be praised for creating one of the most sublime guitar moments ever to be recorded. i think im gushing here. still what the hell, this track is worth it. track three dont trust the kids isnt letting up, a bass sequence brings in the piece. this is soon joined by subtle percussion and a very well-crafted rhythm guitar. manuel certainly gets an amazing rhythmic feel. the lead line isnt far behind, this time two guitars playing in harmony. ive never been really sure whether or not thats a guitar synth. its the right time for the early roland gr500 and i believe edgar froese was using one at about this time as well. the lead is given over to a nicely distorting guitar, again manuel really means every note hes playing. a superb bit of programming moves the whole piece into double-time, and track four blackouts. he isnt even breaking into a sweat, this is fantastic!
jalal salaam and ewonee’s past lives stands among the top releases of 2015. and in 2016 it sees a deluxe vinyl release via house shoes’ street corner music. the 2lp will be complete with all instrumentals, and an insert containing all lyrics. the urgency of these recordings is reflective of the times we live in. jalal salaam’s raps are a perfect marriage to ewonee’s production, eschewing contemporary sounds for an album incredibly well balanced between tradition and progression. “this is one of the best albums i have heard in years, and i’m proud release what i consider a new classic from some of the new guard of new york city’s storied history of hip hop music...” • born in mount vernon, ny, ewonee is the first signee of east coast record label & producer collective, beat haus records, and featured on boiler room (link here) • jalal salaam is out of ardsley/dobbs ferry ny, has collaborated with artists such as ivan ave and fredfades and known for his radical, in depth, and emotionally free lyrical style • this deluxe 2xlp includes the full vocal album along with instrumentals and a lyric sheet.
“best rap album i’ve heard in a long time..” -house shoes
i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. paramatma is the supreme soul, but in this case it’s the supreme sound. after two years of toiling, mono/poly debuted his first full-length release, paramatma, on may 25, 2010. the album is a mix of dub-step beats, astral soundscapes, eastern philosophy, metaphysics, and politics. paramatma has a range of sound that is as cohesive as it is open to experimentation, and the album is less individual tracks and more elements of a musical journey. coloured double vinyl - one yellow, one blue record.
