steppas records presents ‘osaka steppas’ vol. 3, the third in a series of releases showcasing the japanese underground dub movement. this edition features osaka producers hiroshi and roots masashi in collaboration with spanish producer ojah and well-respected uk singer rudey lee. the osaka steppas’ raw and unrelenting sound developed in the subterranean clubs of osaka, a port city famous for its counterculture night life. inspired not only by the sounds of jamaica, but also drawing inspiration from uk and european soundsystem culture with enough bassweight to test even the toughest of soundsystems. presented in a beautifully designed full colour sleeve inspired by the works of the legendary ukiyo-e woodblock artist, hokusai. this release is not to be missed. side a features an earth rocker riddim from ojah & hiroshi, with conscious lyrics sung by the legendary rudey lee. side b features a much sought after dubplate from osaka producer roots masashi, a deep, dark & mystical steppa.

bologna s increasing influence on dancefloors across the world continues as hotly tipped lo-fi house duo nas1 drop their first release on their home town label, sorryforthis records and is sure to be a big moment for their burgeoning reputations. it s an eclectic, multi-layered 4 track ep that pushes the boundaries of what is possible with such minimalist kit to the extreme and includes a remix from sound signature legend marcellus pittman. vino cheenese, as the title suggests, is a leftfield rumbler that, once finished, leaves you unsure how you got there - but sure you enjoyed the journey. oriental synths flutter over a pounding bassline, taking you from gloriously lo-fi, serene moments to being inundated with beats provided by a simmons sds8 and akai mpc1000 that puncture the surreal atmosphere. the pittman remix removes any pretence of serenity and has more of an eye on the dark end of the dancefloor. the bassline is rendered more ominous and the beats more relentless and distorted, while keeping the leftfield vibes in tact. ag pini brings in a lower tempo, with punching industrial yet melodic synths coming in and out of sparse rumbling beats it feels like a kraftwerk track if they had grown up in detroit. the springer is the hardest tune on the e.p – with layers upon layers of crunching beats surrounded by howling, swirling high end synths, looping in and out of each other, putting almost an entire history of dance music in one brutal track.

the activ-analog collective return under this name for the first time in 10 years with a blistering new ep on lisbon s assemble music. taken from group live jams which are mixed down and tweaked on the fly, these four tracks recall the explosive simplicity of daniel bell s output on accelerate, both a-side tracks all whacked-out acid and basslines cut through by razor sharp hats and claps. the b-side sees the addition of the same woozy pads that defined their venerated night shift eps from the late 90s, taking the mood far into the afterhours. hard but with a light touch, funky and clean - in one word, irresistible.

raw machine funk from an intergalactic mind – hakim murphy brings us two contrasting sides of classic analog jams, chicago style. on the a-side, ‘toms from space’ and ‘bgstyle’ both have a melodic nostalgia, the former with pads and drum accents that are almost conversational, the latter’s ringing synth lines cleaving more to the jamal moss school of machines-gone-wild, but still in an introspective mood. the b-side is a heavier affair, ‘stompsb’ coming at you with a barrage of snares, claps and toms that will tickle the more adventurous dancers out there. by ’tf3_2’ the machines are in pure revolt, battery draining and sounds escaping in fits and starts – avant-garde chicago house, no questions asked.

after a very promising debut almost an year ago with their *super quartet ep*, nas1 are back on bosconi extra virgin with another 6 tracker of modern detroit influenced house. the record starts with the wobbling shuffles of 2 bass heavy cuts, the robotic melancholy of *head on* and the funkier-ecstatic *bravo cafe&#769,,,*, while on the closing cut of a side appears the stomping garage beat of *la tosse*.

a labour of love and friendship, the camila ep contains two finely-worked originals. the slow, loping, scratchy jnd is a collaboration with close friend jürgen von krebs that brings to mind stl and theo parrish in its interlocking simplicity and off-key accents. ricky g. :-crimini- is a new independent label born from the experience of some members of the mighty kitchentstudio3, based in bologna italy. the first release contains on the first side three track by nas1 duo. the young duo work at the kitchenstudio3 since 2011, where they produced a lot of good stuff, including a track featuring kyle hall (released by wild oats music), their debut ep on bosconi records, two tracks released by nick anthony simoncino s hotmix records, and many other cool works. on the other side there is a power track, spinning at 45 tmp, produced by the mysterious grienkho, appeared on pushmaster records and austerity, and kosmik, legendary record collector from south of italy.
