rick wade, the self-entitled new duke of cologne returns to cologne based yore imprint, the real dukes in town. the detroit based deep house soldier rick wade has been around for a long time and has been releasing deep house tracks long enough to warrant the ‘old master’ title (all the way back in 1993, he built his own studio and established his harmonie park label), and now he returns of the mighty duke of cologne with a three-track yore follow-up to his fabulous 2008 full-length the good, the bad and the deep.it takes mere seconds for the title cuts deep bass-and-drum pulse to work its magic. driven by a slinky backbeat, the tune gets its skanky kick from a wah-wah guitar figure in the background and the silky allure of classic disco-era strings.

brill deep house with detroit and atmo - tribal feeling

yore starts the new year off on the good foot with a four-tracker from the dutch duo morning factory thats remarkably accomplished for a first release. expertly manning the controls are two gentlemen from the netherlands, jean-pierre van der leeuw and jozef lemmens, who clearly produce a high-octane electronic body music thats timeless and fresh.

the yore captain returns to his own yore imprint on the labels 21st release. shadow city presents different visions of funky house grooves. the a sides the y theme gets deeply moving with a funky house pulse before stoking the fire with the addition of speaking voices (trippingly intoning the q&a what are we doing this for? and the music), a move which single-handedly jumpstarts the track. after the voices appear, the grooves intensity escalates and plunges deeper, its gyroscopic house swing becoming more dizzying and torrential with each passing bar before coming to an acidy storming end. in its opening moments, shadow city opts for a deeper and more serenading vibe by comparison, but thats traded in for a slinkier attack at the three-minute mark that grows progressively more ferocious as the track makes its drastic upwards ascent. a trippin dangerous murder weapon to say the least. watch your heads! the b sides b2 track, mumbai dweller keeps the focus primarily on the bottom end, specifically a strutting tribal-house funk groove thats dragged even deeper by a throbbing bass undertow, adding dark chords to it, giving this ep a darker feeling towards the end. to sum it all up: this is raw house music at its best!

tokyos kez yms follow up to his maiden yore ep, city soul, opts for a more pronounced party vibe, as evidenced by the plenitude of voices that repeatedly pop up during butterflys four deep house tracks. the material sounds of japanese producer kazuki yamaguchi puts a clubby spirit to this ep. propelled by a beautifully warm and soulful bass pulse, inner city funk grooves mightily for five blissful minutes, its rhythm bolstered by the crisp snap of the snare, the funky wah wah of an electric guitar, and the occasional interjection of a synthesizer melody. bridge to bridge quickly charts its own percolating course with the addition of a stepping disco house pulse and a male voices sleepy, off handed musings. bringing the lights down for a romantic make-out session, the sexy low tide chills the pace slightly so that spent dancers can catch their breath and replenish themselves before the next go-round. of the four tracks, the title cut grooves most powerfully in merging a rambunctious broken beat drum attack with an equally driving bass line and manic electric guitar soloing. play these jams loud.

yore returns with yet another deep master piece. javier alvarez, a madrid based producer and proprietor (along with his younger brother dubbyman) of the underground label deep explorer music, brings his relaxed above smoke sound to the yore imprint. in the first of four warm and atmospheric mood pieces, awfully drapes dense synthetic winds over a deliciously grooving, bass prodded deep house pulse. get down does exactly that with five funky minutes of rhodes chords, disco hi hats, and synth swirls, a percolating bass line lends the track a propulsive charge, while crowd voices give the cut a party vibe. on the b sideÆs ôthe fixö javier scatters chopped fragments of the spoken line, i ve got a lot of shit to say and i cant say it all in one day, i cant say it all on one piece of tape, over a funk house groove, after which dubbyman offers variations on the theme in his remix of the track, dubbymans version digs deeper into the cuts bass science and warms the tunes slinky pulse with hand percussion and claps. old school in its embrace of classic house sounds, above smokes ep is tailor made for those who like their material laid back, groove centered, and funky.

let me do yore starts off in tribal mode and then adds triangle and shakers to its relaxed percussive groove before shuttling off into the stratosphere where sheets of synthetic slivers dart past at lightning speed, the tracks bottom heavy pulse builds in intensity as claps and soulful voice swirls bring a delirious vibe to the proceedings. following a detroit tinged intro, a moment of truth slides into place with congas and claps helping it find its way. sizzling hi hats and a thumping kick drum deepen the groove while a funky bass line provides hip shaking accompaniment and marks the return of a house legend, who’s still at his best. soul never goes out of style, right?!

played by karotte, giles smith (secretsundaze), laurent garnier... already up to its 17th release, yore keeps rolling on, this time with a new release by memory foundation. in 1994 robert hood found his way into a dark basement somewhere in viennas suburbia. mr. hood was impressed by what he had heard, and with him a dat-tape took a long journey back to where techno was invented once. with their first appearance on detroits m-plant label 15 years ago, the memory foundation or one of their many alter egos found its way into the hearts and the record-bags of many serious electronic music lovers. in 1997, after setting up their own record labels central and together with jeremiah grow! and other releases on m-plant, 7th city or usm followed. the memory foundation now returns with their contribution for the yore camp, with their >reptiles in exile ep< they prove that they havent lost their magic touch. the track burns with electro-funk fire, with natural kit and cymbal sounds giving the already-surging cut extra thrust and the staccato burble of metallic chords adding berlin flavour. a lithe eight-note bass motif anchors the warm techno-funk of >bass traveller< as a flaring synth motif squiggles alongside rhodes chords and a boogieing clavinet line, and its easy to become so engrossed by the tunes relaxed swing that the artistry of its arrangement can go underappreciated. textbook body music, >summer visions< is an earthier, mid-tempo funk workout thats sure to get the dance floor crowded, while the light-speed closer >reptiles< blazes a slinky house trail whose fresh swing has got yore written all over it. with any luck, we wont be waiting twelve more years for the next memory foundation release

a track is a track, is a track is a track. but not every track is just a track. trackletons stands for much more than just tracks. on his debut ep you wont get to hear the substandard generic ordinary music that can be found everywhere. he has it all. disco, house, minimal, techno, you name it, he brings it. welcoming our latest act >trackleton< with his first appearance in form of his >jump ep< adds a variety of deep styles to this 3-tracker like we have not heard it a long while. the a side is a detroit influenced dance-floor sweeper with melodies so deep and beats so sharp that will leave no escape from making heads turning and get your feet dancing. b1 plays it cool all around the bass-line, laying things down in a old-school sounding manner - minimal to the bone, but done so cleverly to ensure that the basics simply sit right and will get you moving. the b-2 track then surprises you with more than just a hint of disco that will be standing out from the norm and creates a nice diversity. one does not often hear music so warm, on point, deep and yet fully dance-floor oriented

dubbyman is at his best on this >dubless ep< and surely proves to be a man to look out for

the label boss returns to his own yore imprint with another stunning solo release. these are different times indeed for andy vaz if the eps three mighty jams are indicative of where his musics heading. the a-sides over here (a glance over prime time mix) roars from the very first moment vaz unleashes its steaming, latin-tinged groove. a far cry from the techno the yore label head once issued, the tune finds vaz exploring straight up dancefloor territory with a dizzying house pulse that straight up rocks. melodies and voices rise to the surface of the dionysian broil and then just as quickly recede, leaving room for a driving bass line to gain the spotlight. the flips hurry hurry (before its too late mix) is classic deep house just as one expects on yore. a jazz-inflected strut with tilman ehrhorns sax playing, wailing over waves of rollicking piano playing and spirited vocal chants. the energy level doesnt flag for the discs final track, bygone times (nostalgia mix), which stokes a fiery house swing with its locomotive pulse, futuristic synth patterning, and high-velocity bass lines. vazs music has never sounded more impassioned and energized than it does in these three tracks and consequently, just as one might predict, different times feels like its over far too soon

rhodes accents and analog synth melodies, while a vocal chorus ups the soul ante during the marching strut of who am i, a beautiful example of timeless house music if there ever was one. in futuristic funk, a looped voice incessantly repeats too late now, thereby adding a touch of delirium to the tunes stomping swing, after which the vocal line expands into the chanted pray for brighter days / too late now / lose myself in the future / too late now. warmed by old-school synth flourishes, congas, and rhodes melodies, millers rich and seductive club music makes surrender the only possible proposition and a release so rarely deep and musical, which is therefore not to be missed.

yore returns with a true dream team split ep, pairing yore label head andy vaz with sistrum manager patrice scott. vaz is up first with a beautiful slice of old-school funk and soul within a deep house formula, >back to square one< that has a whole lot more in common with isaac hayes and james brown than with juan atkins or any other techno icon. accompanied by a wah-wah guitar figure and claps, a bullet-proof bass line leads a nine-minute charge thats quickly bolstered by a slinkily swinging drum groove. creamy synth chords and blazing horns intermittently spill over the pulsating mix and then vanish, leaving space for the rhythm to intensify and the track to grow ever more euphoric (and even, towards its close, a bit acidy). a true mission into both funk and house, which again showcases vazs ultimate diversity as an outstanding producer. scott titled his second sistrum release beyond deep and the title might just as easily apply to the b-side >aztecal< where the detroit producer slathers shimmering stabs and congealing streams over a thudding kick drum and flickering percussive detail. while vazs cut draws inspiration from the timeless traditions of decades past, scotts looks towards the future when its gleaming shuttle lifts off in pursuit of distant galaxies.
