vox populi field works vol.ii is the second part of a broader project entitled ‘field works’, in which the label travels to different locations in the world in order to collect sounds, eventually creating an archive of some of the finest and humblest musical traditions. inspired by academic methods proper to ethnomusicology and ethnography, this project’s aim is to showcase the diversity of our human cultural heritage, which is threatened by accelerated globalization and homogenization of the worldwide musical spectrum.
this record is the result of a twenty-day trip to japan. led by anthropologist and label founder fred scharf and his vox populi records crew, this is the second instalment on the ‘field works’ series. this 12’’ vinyl release is a collection of field recordings, jam sessions, studio recordings, street soundscapes, religious rituals, fighting championships and wedding ceremonies, all of which were remixed and reinterpreted by japan blues, tim karbon, hiroaki oba & shizka (aka inoue shirabe), delivering tracks whose core represents a wide array of traditional japanese sounds.

following the success of last years reissue of vox populis aither, emotional rescue returns to the french / persian band with the first of two albums selected from their considerable archive. first, their experiments between 1984 and 1989 in what are essentially pre-aither sessions, magiques creations is in essence, an album of the imagination.

são paulo born producer l_cio, is already an established name in the brazilian underground electronic scene. having previously released on d.o.c. and kompakt records, he delivers a 3 track ep full of energy and dance floor ready cuts.
the a side kicks off with “lua”, where unresting hi hats harmonically blend with a powerful kick and lush pads. a2 is the vocal vox version of “lua” featuring the amazing laura diaz, co-founder of the mamba negra collective in são paulo, brazil. on the flip side we find the track “percussive city”, a throbbing percussive number that is primed and ready to set dance floors on fire.

in this age of pre-set play lists and total sharing of music, you more or less get served what you expect to hear. your musical preferences are predictable and you - with little or no effort - get access to music that suits your self-image perfectly and places you in a safe zone.
but what if these babysitting services went on vacation and you’re suddenly left alone in the post-industrial outback? where do you start looking? at first listen you might feel that the songs on loving hell by vox low, released on hoga nord rekords, might not suit your needs in such a cold, harsh existence. but that’s where you’re wrong. vox low’s sound might first appear frightening and cold to you but the tracks on this ep most of all carries with them depth, energy and persistence: the perfect soundtrack to reboot your system to and to get you going straight forward without looking back. this is music for the aftermath of a cathartic experience, music that generates a propulsion that makes you wanna walk on that road forever, music to help you rediscover what punk, rock and electronica really should be about - gut feeling.

alma vox is an eccentric parisian combo, they gave us this little 7-inch without much explanation, and we were instantly drawn by its hazy poetical pop appeal. the a side covers the famous french 80 s song ‘toi mon toit , by elli medeiros, adding a sensual neurasthenic disco twist, yet danceable and fun. theme ii on the b-side, has a mid-tempo reggae/funk mood combined with some ecstatic emotional chords. perfect for a cliché-freemediterranean sunset, this tune has already worked wonders on various discerning dance floors. both tracks have been mixed by i:cube, who added his unique sound to great effect.

vox low come in hard, slow and dark on a new 3 tracker for correspondant. the pyschedlic parisian duo display various iterations of left field menace, ranging from glam rock on “the hunt”, electro disco on “some words of faith, and pitched down acid on “i am a strange machine sometimes”, but all with the signature analogue pulse which correspondant is famed for presenting

vox populi come through with their third release. this time mrs jones delivers four minimal inspired cuts chocked full of grindy deep synth work, vocal manipulations and popping percussion.
