milanese pair francesco mingrino and marcello carozzi have already asserted themselves in the field of adventurous disco experimentation via two sterling outings on the highly rated bordello a parigi, and now they prove their calibre once again with an ep on the ever-vital tusk wax. there s a delicate tone to younger than me on this record, from the heartstring tugging melodics of easy rolling acid throbber -mubai garden tea- to the subtle synth pop touches of -arizona dream.- -manchester s teen- is a tougher affair with the kind of slow filter sweeping lead hook that rave dreams are made of, while -near to bali- finishes the ep on an ominous beatless note. zombies in miami turn in a remix of -mubai garden tea- that maintains the romantic mood of the original while injecting a little more dancefloor heat into its bones.

cleveland is forever in search of the brown note. this is his second offering for the esp institute. side a’s tusk is a beautiful paradox—rhythm programs that churn like the inner workings of a grandfather clock, unmistakably mechanical, yet fashioned through muted analogue instrumentation that paints a deceptively organic picture. the crystallized jangle of fm synth voices toy with the softened drum patterns and vibrant animal-like chord gestures over nearly seven minutes of splendor. on side b, aku digs further into mysticism, manifesting digital jungle themes, cleverly abstracted through erratic bleeps, distant tribal drums, atonal flutters and synthetic bird calls. the cinematic quality of clevelands production shines through both tracks, but its aku that sweeps us from reality to embark on a moonlit expedition in search long lost treasures, proving cleveland a virtuoso skilled in building complex narratives with sound. these two songs will modulate your frequencies.

lord tusk has associated with acts like klein, john t. gast, dean blunt, yasiin bey aka mos def, and released on jon rusts levels, funkinevens apron, soul jazz records and low income $quad. communiqué is made of breathy, glossy sci-fi electro, bitcrushed drum samples and minneapolitan funk feng shui, the hits and stabs of new jack swing and fm boogie, all pieced together with a one-take energy but a meticulous attention to detail. it’s songwriting for a miscellaneous kind of soundsystem music, body music, flamboyant across tempo, from the yearning thump of shyne eyed gal to the puffed-up strut of champion lovers (sounding like a home-taped electrifying mojo opener), the staggered slink of beyond limitation’s unfiltered tones to the 4x4 uptempo skid of don’t be shy or the veering slap-bass groove of elevation. it’s a record that shoots around corners, conjuring lazy romances and smokey vistas, lit by the nocturnal shimmer of an electrified city, streaked with gargantuan, shrill, birdlike call-and-response riffs and visited by the astral bodies of teddy riley, gerald donald, prince.

fresh from charming the pants off us with the verdant echoes from the southern place 12-, italian producer piero paolinelli is back as sofa talk with a new single striding out on the ever fantastic tusk wax. this 12- comes steeped in different shades of party music, from the bouncy organ chords and motor city leads of -disquiet- through to the slickly diced up boogie tones of -elastic-. as well as paolinelli s mighty fine originals, the remixes come from some big hitters. ad bourke gets on board to turn -disquiet- into a energised, bubbling house burner while posthuman brings some of his trademark tough acid touches to elastic-.

an ep of golden bug on lddlm has been a long-time coming. paths crosses, encounters, similitudes. but it took all of us time to agree on how golden bug should fit into our mortal ethics of fragmentation: we don t want to sound like anybody else, each track on the ep should all sound different. the french but barcelona based producer played our game, anticipating his future and very diverse album with a spook yet catchy 12inch. wild boys was an instant ear-catcher, some proto funk with a very strong vocal by yan wagner that made it sound like duran duran on speedball. it was hard to take it to another level but lord tusk, one of our favourite producers of the emerging -no genre london scene beefs it up, kraftwerk way. its moody as we all are. ik voel je shows the more experimental spaced out side of golden bug, we d call it space rock if we had to. do not neglect l-horloge, it s slow, dark, menacing but it s a real time bomb if tuned correctly.
