following afrobeat makers vol.1 (sold out), comet is pleased to announce the second volume of the afrobeat makers collection, due for release in june this year: the tony allen’ original afrobeat patterns revisited by few of the best international dj/producers, with among them: doctor l (paris), thiago franca (sao paulo), mps pilot (amsterdam), or gnowee (paris) tony allen has spread afrobeat to the corners of the globe, a perfect synthesis of tradition and sophistication – his various collaborations with great artists from all genres and styles are a truly proof of his openness. doctor l, paris based music producer, is a sound activist going through the musical galaxies, fusioning from 80’s punk rock, to hip-hop, electronica and afrobeat ... in 2000, already on comet records, he brought lagos afrobeat towards the third millennium with the album black voices by tony allen, and even send it to the moon, with his other project, psyco on da bus. since 2002, dj/producer mps pilot (nl) has immersed himself in the cutting-edge tropical bass scene. in every possible direction and slippage between all different genres, mps pilot maps the crosspollination and divergence of contemporary music. he performed on 3 continents, both in remote desert or major festivals. thiago franca is a producer, musician and saxophonist from são paulo arts scene, this year with his power afro-punk trio meta meta, they released for the first time in europe (mais um discos -uk), their debut album metal metal. thiago is meanwhile developping his african rooted solo outfit, sambanzo, and was also in criolo’s touring band for two years, where he met tony allen, which led to two collaborations on the the afrobeat makers and meta meta’ albums.

part two of the ep features the motor city drum ensemble remix, and the original “in a silent mix” version from 1999, a track out of its time when released on allen’s sole record “black voices”. a long serving dekmantel veteran, danilo plessow was there from the start. after compiling the first selector’s compilation last year, mcde turns tony allen’s masterpiece in a jam, with added house beats, giving the funk number the edit treatment. the final mix sounds like the kind of track you would hear mcde play in one of his sets as he’s firing up the heat. the organ sounds and trumpets are left high in the mix, to create an unforgettable hook that resonates throughout, in complete motor city style.

blue note is pleased to announce the release of legendary nigerian drummer tony allens new ep, a tribute to art blakey and the jazz messengers. the 4 titles featured in the ep moanin, the drum thunder suite, night in tunisia, politely provide a preview of his forthcoming first album for blue note (currently scheduled for release in autumn 2017) on which tony allen pays tribute to his longstanding idol, american jazz drummer art blakey.the ep s four titles and the other tracks that make up the album were recorded over three days in paris at the midilive studios, the former facility of the vogue label. the sessions were done in live conditions that saw tony allen and his 8-piece band together in the same room, with the sound channelled through 12 separate mikes onto 2-tape via a sony mci-jh24 analogue multi-track recorder.

originally released in 2002, here reissued as a remastered version tony allen talks about the album: after black voices and psyco on da bus albums, i came back with homecooking which was an album filled with guests. i brought in ty, who had remixed some of my work previously, to rap on the record, and damon albarn, who had already sung about me on music is my radar. since the early days ive been trying to find things that everybody will want to listen to. ive always been pushing afrobeat in different directions. heres another one again, another style, almost clean but still rough, raggedy and radical.
