shane cooper is a bassist, composer and producer from cape town, south africa. he is part of the new wave of young voices in the south african jazz scene. a prolific sideman and award-winning acoustic jazz artist, he also involved in south africa’s leftfield electronic dance scene under the alias card on spokes. features shabaka hutchings ( a.r.e project., sons of kemet and shabaka and the ancestors) amongst other fine players. big tip!

up next from the rhythm büro label is an ep from cyspe, who might be better known as robin koek or for being one half of the almighty dutch techno duo artefakt. rb003 marks a special occasion for the label in releasing a full ep from a single artist. “after this world” seems to proceed forward fittingly on the same path once paved by cyspe’s debut record “amnesia”, released on koek’s own label, insula, in 2014.

produced by sly & robbie at channel 1 in the early 80s. this killer viceroys tune was never released at the time, but was played by some sounds on dubplate and has become hunted by collectors ever since. great lyrics and a spare, heavy mix elevates this tune to more than something that didn t make the cut for release.

vor zehn jahren veröffentlichte daptone records zum ersten mal diese zusammenstellung mit ende der 1960er jahre nur als singles erschienenen songs des new yorker duos bob & gene. das von tollen vokal-harmonien dominierte sweet soul music-album, samt titelgebender marvin gaye/tammi terrell- coverversion von “if this world were mine”, war damals schnell vergriffen und ist seitdem ein gesuchtes sammlerstück. jetzt ist es wieder erhältlich, wieder auf vinyl, jedoch remastert und um zwei nicht auf der original-version erschienenen tracks erweitert. 1967 waren die beiden teenager bobby nunn und eugene coplin die stars des in buffalo, new york ansässigen und auf lokale gospel- und soul-acts spezialisierten labels mo do records. bobby nunn veröffentlichte später soloalben auch auf motown records und arbeitete mit rick james und philip bailey zusammen.

rummage in some boxes of my favourite record store i found a cover that made me curious. l kubic & tagträumer² - the only thing in this world and on the flipside a remix by alle farben. when placing the needle at the beginning of the vinyl the first sounds were very strange. i thought that must be a record from the 60s lost in the tech-house box but than a straight beat turned everything different. a piano melody slowly sat down firmly in my ear and i was longing to know where the journey takes me. after a while an acidline pushed everything and i was sure at this time this is not a normal 4/4 tech-house record. alle farben remixed the themes very playful and i heard that he gives the elements more pressure for the club. so at the end i bought this one and i cannot imagine taking this unique record ever again out of my record case.

time 4 harmony in this world from moss opens with the title track that is a 15 minute ride of percussive elements, atmospheric synths and melodies. resonant on the flip is a exquisite piece of experimentation & a day trip thru divination rounds off the ep with a slow tempod basement track.
