following the release of “all my dreams / innocence” last month, today róisín murphy unveils the second pair of tracks in her series of four scintillating 12”singles produced by maurice fulton and shared across consecutive months this summer through the vinyl factory. having taken control of all aspects of her work in recent years, murphy delivers yet another amazing vision with a series of films to go along side her new music. filmed over a two day residency in london’s the store x, the “plaything” video follows “all my dreams” from moloko onwards, murphy has always gravitated towards a deep groove. but here, with baltimore maverick musician/producer/dj maurice fulton, she s gone and made some of the most hip-twitching, pleasure-centre-stimulating music of her life. and it s being released in the only correct way for sounds so intimately connected to the dancefloor: on a series of 12” singles, with stunning graphics from portuguese new yorker bráulio amado.

as the title suggests, joakim recorded this new album last year at studio venezia, the installation/sculptural ensemble/recording studio created by xavier veilhan for the prestigious 2017 venice art biennale. built inside the french pavilion & inspired by the grotto-like merzbau by kurt schwitters, studio venezia had dozens of artists create and record there over the 6 months of the biennale (from chassol to brian eno, from joakim to sebastien tellier), invited by xavier veilhan himself with the help of co-curator christian marclay. with an impressive collection of rare instruments from medieval horns to rare modular synths (baschet crystals and percussions, a buchla, a clavinet...), studio venezia was an amazing creative playground for the adventurous musician. those instruments were captured by a team of sound engineers in the best possible way thanks to nigel godrich’s (beck, radiohead...) mobile studio loaded with state of the art vintage recording gear.

audio-visual artists soundwalk collective were granted exclusive access to the personal archive of the groundbreaking filmmaker and present their ambitious new album and remix ep: what we leave behind. the nyc and berlin based group were invited to aurally explore the archive of the seminal french director jean-luc godard and release their interpretations in an innovative new album what we leave behind. drawing on godards personal collection of shot film, reel- to-reels and historical ephemera, the recordings reveal the moments before and after the camera rolls, from stage directions and on-set asides to rehearsals, false stars and outtakes.

there’s a delicacy to the performances by toxe—not a fragile delicacy, but the kind you’d associate with an olympic rhythmic gymnast, whose twirls only seem light and graceful because of the immense muscular power behind them. “ - fader toxe’s horizons are very wide - she has deconstructed britney spears in -xic- for halcyon veil and with ‘still life’ (co-produced with mechatok) she caught the atttention of kenzo who used it as a score to their fw 2016 prints’ presentation and she has also performed alongside arca. toxe exhibits her relentless creativity as she edits and produces her own videos designs her visuals, exhibiting her relentless creativity which has lead to the excitement for the upcoming audio visual collaboration. the work, ‘morning story’, was created in collaboration with artist niclas hille. released on limited edition vinyl and also digitally in may 2017. the swedish musician crafts some of the most stomach-churning music productions, innovative drum patterns and lovelorn melodies in the scene. her debut ep ‘muscle memory’ was released on staycore in october 2015. on the five tracks of this release she clashed boulder-heavy rhythms against intricate details painting a picture very human and emotional, developing a very distinctive sound. the artist concluded 2016 with her first ever south-american tour. more recently, toxe played at berlin s ctm festival and meetfactory in prague. the swedish experimentalist has just been announced for a gucci x club to club night in milan, best kept secret and wiener festwochen s new hyperreality festival.

the motionless present is a collection of unreleased poems and soundscapes by the philadelphia-based artist and activist camae ayewa, who performs as moor mother. reverberating and rumbling through the thoracic cavity, few records spoke to the contemporary black american experience quite like moor mother’s 2016 protest album fetish bones. her first new material since that visceral and political work,the motionless present is a statement towards understanding the disconnect between humanity and injustice. the release features various new collaborations and previews of upcoming projects: black quantum futurism, moor jewelry, mental jewelry, 700 bliss and more. the motionless present was created in collaboration with the vinyl factory ahead of moor mother’s ctm festival performance at berghain. artwork designed by bcmh using the collage artwork of grassi.

non worldwide co-founder chino amobi makes his vinyl debut with the soundtrack to choreographer ligia lewis’ minor matter, a performance piece that deftly articulates an argument for minoritarian politics. most of the material is newly commissioned but one of the tracks, ‘locus of control’, is lifted from amobi’s provocative airport music for queer black and brown folk album, in which he follows brian eno in inducing the atmosphere of an airport terminal. but through the eyes of a black man and with 2016 realism, it’s a different story, where eno invites lullaby, chino unshackles nightmare

british artist gazelle twin presents her new audio visual performance show for two vocalists, kingdom come . three tracks from the av show, created in collaboration with video directors chris turner and tash tung, are now available on limited edition vinyl via the vinyl factory. artwork by jonathan barnbrook. the conceptual performance for two vocalists is staged in six chapters, incorporating electronics, film, and the brand new soundtrack from gazelle twin, created from samples and live vocal manipulation. with the piece set on treadmills against a manic, illusory landscape, kingdom come places heightening physical demands on the performers, resulting in an exhausting, otherworldly climax. taking its title from j. g ballard’s final novel, kingdom come will play with notions of feralness, displacement and the uncanny in the contemporary british, urban landscape. the artwork for the ep has been designed by jonathan barnbrook whom has used the track and a.v video for metro as his inspiration. jonathan recently featured in the new design museum exhibition, designs of the year , with jonathan s design for david bowie s blackstar album.

the music of swedish producer hans berg often soundtracks sculptural installations produced in collaboration with his partner nathalie djurberg. working as an artistic duo since 2004, their output comprises animation, public sculpture, immersive environments and now, vinyl recordings taken from these same pieces. berg brings his experience in house and techno music culture to bear on this cooperative process. the first track began life as an accompaniment to the outdoor work in dreams (2016), installed at the wanås sculpture park in sweden. a naturalistic soundscape of birdsong gives way to a wave of complex, driving synth-pop, itself a shimmering reflection of the riotous, mirrored floor that nestled in the forest glade.

nyc-based duo jasmine golestaneh and eddie cooper write songs through a telepathic kinship thevve developed since they started making music together. we have these sort of unspoken criteria when we re writing music. we never really need to explain what that is but we both know when it s missing or when we ve hit it. the pair, aka tempers, are set to release their fundamental fantasy ep via the vinyl factory on 24th february. creating an emotional and tonal tension of sensual and mechanical impulses, their brand of dark electronica sets haunting song writing to a sinister disco beat, pop melodies floating in an almost industrial soundscape. it follows the bands 2015 debut full-length services. fundamental fantasy is about exploring the creative scenery of romantic illusions. our need for them, how we justify them to ourselves, that moment when the imagined story line collides with reality. the ways we fictionalize people to fit into the narratives we have about love - to reflect our own beliefs, virtues and flaws. it is about celebrating fantasies swelling and getting undone, so we can pick up the pieces and craft new ones that serve us better tempers musically, fundamental fantasy is an evolution in both song writing and process, while still tracing a clear line to their earlier output. many of the eps melodies were born of live improvisation, which helped them create an instinctive, natural immediacy within their electronic arrangements. the cover of the ep depicts the duo on the volcanic island of stromboli, where they performed at the volcano extravaganza, an art and music festival curated by the vinyl factory.it is a perfect landscape to mirror the mood of ‘fundamental fantasy. a seemingly idyllic place that is isolated from the outside world.

following the recent release of so low, a compilation of early ‘80s synth, industrial and cold wave classics and undiscovered gems curated by optimo’s jd twitch aka keith mcivor, the vinyl factory are set to release specially commissioned remixes of two tracks on the 16-track compilation by rising uk producer powell and hamburg’s helena hauff. powell’s pneumatic sound is perfectly suited to ‘49 second romance’ by german minimalists p1/e, which he deftly deconstructs, while hauff adds glistening synths to belgian electro-industrial group the klinik’s ‘moving hands’ for a driving, nocturnal version.

the vinyl factory has teamed up with french label zone for another rugged techno four tracker, this time from close associate and well established production talent maelstrom. though his name suggests total chaos, maelstroms music belies intention, focus and precision. often marked as exciting newcomer to french techno, maelstrom has actually been making music for over fifteen years. with a cryptic history of aliases and side projects, illegal raves thrown in warehouses and fields and basements, the artist has really come into his own under this moniker. the optics ep showcases metallic techno, acid house, industrial noise and stark ambient sounds, forging smokey machine music for those with a penchant for post punk and a soft spot for the spikier end of the techno spectrum.

infamous for his part in glasgow’s dj duo optimo and the production partnership naum gabo (speicher / kompakt extra), j.g. wilkes is an esteemed music producer with a catalogue that has been building since the turn of the century. the ‘jaxon’ ep is j.g. wilkes’ first widely available solo 12” release containing four exquisite cuts exploring the ethereal boundaries of electronica. taken from a limited edition mini album box set entitled ‘german pizza party’ (vf111), j.g. wilkes’ ‘jaxon’ is the only track from that collection aimed anywhere near a dancefloor, in which rich and potent rhythms collide with foreboding frequencies. cologne’s barnt isn’t afraid to let the elegance of space and chaos into his heartfelt rework, solidly cementing the koln-glasgow freundschaft. the ep features two further productions from wilkes, the melancholic, beatless and occasionally ruthless ‘bathing beauty’ in its original form and ‘useful tool’, given a turbulent rework by naum gabo.
