recorded in a bunker somewhere in the ancient basque region, sagas of subterranean life is a collection of 5 sagas that are heavily influenced by scandinavian life and european culture in general. showcasing a versatile collection of 5 bits that range from moving distorted house jams to synth blops and violating techno, norse is not just a collaboration between soul notes head honcho kastil and rotterdam based gitchell moore, it s also a project that tends to avoid genre-restrictions and box thinking. odd sequences x violating drum patterns x palindrome titles = sagas of subterranean life.

the soul notes imprint has never restricted itself to just one sound. ever since it emerged in late 2011, the basque county based outfit has shown several sides of its identity and has developed into a diverse and well balanced home. one of the labels usual suspects is cologne native, adryiano. after reaping some havoc with his efforts on the snx series early last year, adryiano has been crafting his down south ep (ironically) somewhere in the north rhine-westphalian concrete jungle. the down south ep is buldging with deep sine basses, fine rhythmic synthwork and lavish but hefty beats. the title track showcases these exact things best. the essence of adryiano s latest effort is still somewhat hard to pin down. a lot of different moods are going on throughout the ep while the overall sounds maintains it s own glance. from the deep machinefunk on down south to the broken beats of feel what you do. all of these bits have a nice theme to them.

one would never think of mystic rituals when thinking of basque county. yet, this might be a premature thought. naturally, the isle of haiti or the american deep south come to mind when thinking of these tribal traditions.

label-owner kastil continues the soul notes imprint with a release that represents the self-reivention process that he is currently experiencing. emphasizing on advanced synthesis and a more atmospheric approach to his sound, the basque country native takes one on an intergalactic journey through his current mindset.

in recent times soul notes tilted a little towards more groove driven, distortion ladenmachine funk. snx001 is the missing release out of the snx series thus far. label head honcho kastil joins up with cologne based adryiano, who is quickly becoming one of the labels favorite household names. the signature snx sounds is developing into a dark psych-oriented club sound which this ep represents as never before. the opening track *snakes and holes* is pure percussive machinery with the heaviest overdriven kickdrums you will ever hear. on the a2, adryiano sets the mood with a low swinging bass and some eardrum deafening kicks which progresses into the b1 which is perced out to the max with some 303 bassline drama and distortion to top that off. for the b2 track, head honcho kastil shows off some lo-fi drum action on controversy.

hamsa intenational are hitting us with some obscure and analog live jams for club use only. rigid grooves that transform subtly by the use of frequency cuts and vocal chops make bodytalk an interesting lo-fi sounding yet energetic jam for peak hours and after. the analog warmth thats filling up the speaker cans comes straight out of old machines and a tape recorder.

love notes from brooklyn offers up this platter from a very exciting new brooklyn artist, subtenant. as it says on the tin, the artisanal acid ep is heavy on the 303 squelches and emotional content. each track has a unique pairing of soul and heavy acid funk. evergeen soul is the clear lead track here, using a female snippet to keep this otherwise tough little number dancefloor friendly. this track is then reworked by detroit underground darling, d marc cantu, who pitches things up into funky rave territory. the flip side sees the title track feature the most soulful chords on the entire record, and then on the b2 the artist himself takes to the mic on know how it feels. this whole ep feels live and direct from the brooklyn underground.

one of the most respected producers in the underground, anaxander, contributes two beautiful pieces of original music, and has one of them reworked by deep house heavy hitter, the mighty amir alexander. lost my soul (in yours) is twisted little number, with dual synth riffs echoing off each other for maximum effect. a question about you uses jazzy chords and flutes over its undeniable bassline to retain some soulful flavoring, but amir strips all of that away on his interpretation, preffering instead to let the acid and the warehouse vibes have their way, taking things right into a 6am rave nightmare. this is absolute must-have piece of wax!
