soma’s italian connection, roberto clementi, makes a welcome return opening his 2016 account with the solid, “wall of people”. including a top notch remix form ilian tape label heads, marco & dario zenker. robert has slowly been building his credentials in the techno world with some fine releases and this driving number is another to add to increasing discography with soma.
the zenker brothers remix opens the ep as the munich based duo lend their deep and highly refined production talents to “wall of people”. ruptured beats play havoc with a shimmering high end and rattling percussive elements all tied in with a pulsing, modulating synth hook that keep the track feeling fairly dark. clementi’s original shows a much harder edge to his previous work with big, sub heavy beats worked around a more pumped up rhythm and tearing synth line

on soma ep warszaw based duo mech installs four tracks in the cryptic reduced style of thomas brinkmann’s max/ernst series. the guys deliver an audio work production on resopal that hovers among forms such as techno, minimalism, and ambient. on all four tracks the elements are limited but the output bounces and rattles within - moving and exploring into more experimental zones of minimalism like plastikman, brinkmann, or former mille plateaux. a damn solid four tracker whether you know the math or not.

the first lad of birmingham techno, rebekah, arrives on soma in a rapturous debut on the confined heart ep. having made her name through the mighty clr and her own decoy label, rebekah has her sights focussed firmly on the future as she develops her ferocious sound with the classy 2 track ep. showing real death to her productions, confined heart has an almost, deeper emotional content whilst still being true to her uncompromising sound. kill floor immediately has you running for the hills as rebekah powers home her soma debut with sheers brute force.

ukrainian duo woo york mark their 5th release on soma records with the pulsing blade runner, backed by an incredible zadig remix. the boys have made a welcome home on soma records as the continue to push their raw analogue sound upon the world.

the second installment of re interpretations form slams latest, critically acclaimed album reverse proceed sees soma look to yet more highly regarded techno artists to provide their reimaginings of their favourite tracks from reverse proceed. long time soma collaborator gary beck makes a welcome return to the label alongside fellow scottish upstarts clouds and finally dutch techno wizard, jeroen search. each brings their inimitable style to the project.

mark henning makes a welcome return to soma records with the sublime sunday slide. a multi faceted release that definitely has something for everyone! title track sunday slide is fantastic, deep affair. a simplistic house beat is slowly added to by well-crafted synth work that opens and flows perfectly throughout the track. on the flip, youre digging into me, is a catchy house number with a baseline that is sure to stick in your head!

veil of light is the synth/postpunk solo project of a mystery man from zurich known to the wider world only as m. the project was born in 2012 when all the tracks for the veil of light eponymous 2013 ep released on belaten were recorded by m in a bunker near zurich. that last fact incidentally is a good way to describe the music released under this project’s name much like the mental image of a bunker it is cold dark and forces one into a contemplative resigned state. the influences that immediately come to mind listening to veil of light are 1980’s wave music post punk industrial and dark ambient all weaved together by an overarching depressive yet dreamy atmosphere. it has been called gothgaze and the description seems apt. the followup to the opener the 7” cold skin single released on edition gris and the debut lp simply titled as well as this years head/blood/chest ep continue in the same vein.
