ltd repress , transparent blue vinyl - maximal 1 per customer - the amsterdam-based duo wanderwelle returns to silent season with their second album, which is inspired by the last years of the life of paul gauguin that he spent on the island of tahiti. gathering of the ancient spirits tells the alternative history of his search for a land which is untouched by modern society and whose inhabitants were still dependent on the gifts of nature and connected to their ancestors. during his stay, the painter encounters forgotten rituals and the primordial beings which haunted the island since the dawn of men.

samuel van dijk is an electronic music producer, sound designer and media artist from the netherlands releasing deep electronic music as vc-118a, mohlao, and multicast dynamics. drawing inspiration from technology, nature, film, and fiction, his productions and live sets embody a dynamic musical framework. since the dutchman surfaced as mohlao for labels like meanwhile, field and other heights at the turn of the decade, van dijk?s music has found a firm position, the ethereal electro vc-118a project, deep ambient techno as mohlao, and subterranean ambient as multicast dynamics.

having only made spotted appearances in the past, icy ambient techno artist winter in june makes a fine first outing on vinyl with a press of his ep eternal lovers. it s prime silent season material, using massive slabs of reverb and a foreboding sense of space as his main weapons while rolling out bleak machine matter that sounds as though it were blown across the tundra. about life & death is particularly moving with its heart monitor bleeps and forlorn strings, while the party is elsewhere is a telling trip into the coldest of coldwave.

owl has previously been spotted on labels such as anekoic, circular limited and planet rhythm, but he made quite an impression with the digital release of his blackstone ep on silent season. now the label have done the right thing and cut the release to vinyl, giving ambient belters such as fragment the chance to sit beside none quieter gems like solar wind on wax. there are whispers of rhythm to be found tucked away in blowing the light, while innominate horizon imparts a little warmth with its tender chords, making this a record rich in variation as much as subtlety.

maciej banasik has been releasing plenty of music as mb as well as docetism since 2012, but this release on silent season marks the first time the prolific artist s music has been committed to wax. in true silent season style the mood is consistently haunting, leading in with the foggy pulse of dentario enneaphyllidis fagetum i before the second part of the piece heads off into pure swelling drone. querco pinetum i is a different kind of droning techno that comes loaded with cinematic poise, but it makes for a natural partner to the a side. the second part of that piece drifts into calming field recordings of birds and shapeless synth swells of a truly majestic nature.

asc is a perfect fit for silent season, favouring as he does greyscale melodic content and a cerebral approach to mutant techno. cerulean is a fine opening gambit on this 12inch, all crooked kick patterns and micro bleeps calling out into nothing, while dimension 1010 maintains the austere approach with a slow swell of melancholic ambience over a meditative rhythm. enchanted is no less restrained, but there s a subtle shard of light in the murmuring pad that lingers in the background. that s well and truly dealt with on the bleak beatdown molniya, which pings bleakest techno into a black hole of sound, which is of course a wonderful thing to behold.

silent season tap up antenes for a rare 12inch, building on the sizable impact her last and only release on l.i.e.s. had back in 2015. here we get three trips into dark, evocative techno territory as you would expect to find on silent season, leading in with the doom-laden march of dream uncreates the land. take me to the birds (for a) ditches the drums and heads straight into the most delicate and stirring of ambient pieces, while metra train chicago 1000x- makes use of field recordings and processed static to make for an even more immersive listening experience. this is a daring release that eschews the need for functionality to take the listener somewhere else entirely.

jacob long s work as earthen sea has already firmly established itself on itals lovers rock label, but here the san francisco-based artist is branching out to a sympathetic ear silent season. much like other artists on the label, long s fusion of heavy atmospherics and submerged techno make for a compelling, immersive listen. at times, such as on -the sky is a sea of darkness-, he opts for a looming set of pads and textures that bear down on the listener. elsewhere, more delicate sounds interact across the frequency range, but what binds the record together is the weight of the ambience long is so adept at crafting. without a thread of a kick drum pulse to be heard throughout, it s another strong step on for earthen sea.

brendon moeller makes a neat fit on vancouver island s finest outpost of dusky avant-techno. moeller has of course turned his hand to many different shades of rhythm over the course of his career, but there s something in his blown out, dub-smoked sound that aligns perfectly with the autumnal introspection of silent season. the results live up to the promise, from the warm but melancholic throb of glow to the oppressive sub pulse of abandon. the hike takes things into more abstract territory, and then yearning rounds the record off on an oblique swinging techno tip trasnmitted from out in the leftfield.

odes of the kabatians is a collaborative project from emergent french producers pvnv and amandra, and with their inclusion on the silent season x series they bring a different mood from the consistent dubbed-out nature of many of the releases. varsovie i is a crisp and clear exercise in cyclical techno programming, while varsovie ii throws shades of light and dark into the melting pot to create an arresting modern techno workout. on the flipside varsovie iii takes a more murky turn towards intricate textures and rhythms and then -varkovie iv- blows things open with a broken beat and tender chords, while still retaining that tough production finish that gives the record its grit.

canadian label silent season continues its mission to marry modern electronic music processes with the ancient nature of the label s base on vancouver island, this time turning to mosam howieson to deliver a four track ep of ambient techno experimentation. the melbourne-based artist has a unique approach that should appeal to lovers of heavyweight bass pressure and subtle, moody cinematics, not least on opening track i. there s a submerged acid throb to ii, but only after time spent lingering in a beatless reverie. loaded with surprises at every turn, this record has a lot of depth that should it rewarding faithful listeners for a long time to come.

hypnus records regular blndr makes the leap over to silent season as they continue to celebrate their expansive tenth anniversary with a series of unmissable 12inches. dub techno is very much the order of the day on this grip of four tracks from the french producer, with shimmering chords and subterranean rhythms spelling out a perfect recipe for total meditation. -abstraction- is a highlight with its thin slithers of sound ducking and diving between the erratic kicks while partial drifts on a slow-creeping beat that gently buffets the vaporous chords downstream. with whispers of club compatibility tucked into the folds of these heavy-lidded tunes, there are many ways you could find yourself engaging with this 12inch.

mystica tribe is the musical alias of tokyo-based producer, taka noda. drawing on a wide range of influences from dub, soul, bass music, rhythm and blues mystica tribe has quickly been developing a very distinctive sound that exists in a weird, freaked out zone between dub and techno. noda is especially interested in deep, psychedelic music, and this is reflected in his productions, which are equally suited for late night listening sessions or bent, broken in dancefloors. his first track, meditation stick, was released in 2011 on dutch label sd records, backed by two remixes from label owners syncom data. this was followed by two more eps on sd records in 2013: stars are mine and flowers. artists like gilles peterson and 2562 have supported these well-received releases, and his track. his temple recently appeared on pangaea s fabric live 73 mix cd. in 2014, noda is launching his own label, mystica tribe records, through which he plans to continue developing his uniquely psychedelic take on dub and techno. his recent ep, lizard, was released on his label in 2014. jade eye ep was released on his label in 2016.

over the mountains is segues second album on silent season, a follow up to pacifica which was released to much praise in 2013. over the mountains continues the course in true segue fashion with an album full of dubbed out atmospheric grooves and deep organic structures. the sound is consumed by nature—immense, enveloping nature in jordan sauers never-ending quest to capture the sublime. the record feels like a nostalgic dream swirling in melodies and buzzing with nature sounds. over the mountains is honourably another awe-inspiring album of lush landscapes by this canadian artist

through the spirit realm is refracteds first lp to date, and it comes canadas excellent silent season, a home to rasmus hedlund, quantec, and asc, among others. enter the jungle quickly gives a picture of what s to come thanks to the track s abstract blend of animal sounds, a myriad of noises which is swallowed up the warm and dubby swings of the jungle is thick, a donato dozzy kinda lick. the whole lp follows a similar string of thought, one that binds stripped back techno together with deep ambience and slow moving plates of drone, the ritual begins is simply hypnotic and we could keep it on for hours on loop. its tribalism at its most cutting-edge, and an altogether fantastic debut performance from this growing techno personality.

long-serving brit in san diego james clements dons his familiar asc guise once more, for a typically atmospheric trip into deep, ambient-influenced abstract techno for canada s silent season imprint. as usual, there s much to admire, from the sparse percussion, glacial electronics and icy melodies of deep freeze, to the minimalist, modular sounding hum of closer raging seas. arguably best of all, though, is immersion, which sees clements expertly combine early 90s style dreamy ambient chords, textures and melodies think pete namlook or early irresistible force with scraped metal textures and impeccable idm beats

the first release for silent season and edoardo zerbinati, aka edanticonf, for 2014 is the boundary of nowhere land ep, a four-track excursion through naturalistic ambience mixed with synthy, trance-like textures and a layering of dub techno. it is zerbinatis third release for the british columbian label following his planet ep and forest echo album of 2012 that featured title track edits from adbullah rashim and iori.

the british columbia based label silent season properly issue pacifica, the fourth studio lp from compatriot jordan sauer ka segue - an album that seems destined to become this year s voices from the lake. released originally in a highly limited cdr pressing earlier this year, pacifica now arrives in a deluxe 2lp format that really does the vivid cover art justice! adopting a pace that is immediately soothing, pacificas nine tracks are made all the more welcoming by the rich sense of melody that floats throughout, ensuring that the album has a sense of consistency that rewards the senses many times over.
