scuba drops another four cuts as scb on hotflush recordings this december. paul rose first launched his scb moniker in 2010, going on to appear on labels like ostgut ton, aus music and nonplus until 2014. this year saw the pioneering british producer revisit his darker alias with a dystopian themed release on hotflush he now returns with four more twisted and ominous productions.

an innate facet of the human condition is the very personal way we choose to process our own fatality. faced with dealing with the feelings of anxiety, death and fear after nearly drowning whilst diving in the south atlantic in his youth, ricardo donoso chose to channel them into his creative process. the result was scuba death, a project that was fully realised on donoso’s widely acclaimed 2014 further debut, nitrogen narcosis. after spending time devoted to establishing his kathexis label as well as delivering a trilogy of albums under his given name for the denovali label, donoso returns to further with a second scuba death offering, the worm at the core.

london born paul rose’s career has been intrinsically linked to hotflush recordings, the label he set up in 2003. coming back full circle to his formative mid-90s days of following colin faver and jeff mills, rose’s fabric appearances have evolved over the years from bass music fridays to the house and techno of saturday nights. this 10” sampler, taken from the 90th instalment of the world’s leading house and techno mix series from london’s renowned fabric nightclub features two tracks from fabric90 scuba mix, both taken from scuba’s own label, hotflush.

scubas entry in the revered fabric mix series features four debut-making artists, three of whom, isaac reuben, glaskin, blursome, feature on the present sampler 12inch alongside the already-emerging talent of tallmen785. together they cover a rich gamut of style. tallmens gear-shifting opener a charge of the techno brigade replete with live drum fills leads into blursomes compact, broken, nocturnal outcry. isaac reuben then messes with structure and genre, bringing deep house tropes into a lofi, rough and raw world before glaskin blow the door wide open right at the very end to reveal their cavernous, ultra deep field. you’ll be hearing a lot from all of them on hotflush in the coming months, so for now let the music break the ice

to coincide with the full remix album’s unveiling on cd, the exquisite reworkings of all i think about is death and why you feel so low by techno heavyweights radio slave and function respectively, have been singled out for release on vinyl. the former bears all the hypnotic hallmarks of a radio slave classic: incrementally menacing percussive lines woven with the heart wrenching vocal chants of the original over an epic 12 minutes. at once understated and emphatic, the tenor is deepened in the extreme on an ambient atmos version. berghain resident, function, on the other hand treats claustrophobias flagship why you feel so low with a delicate touch: he retains the buoyant hook of the original, underlying it with a thunderous, reverberating bassline, handclaps for days, and a beat tailor-made for only the biggest and brightest sound systems.

scuba s musical biography has been a story of constant change. over the past eleven years, his music has zigzagged through bass, techno and house, at times dark and contemplative, at others bright and anthemic. a look at his discography bears out this creative restlessness: from the shadowy rhythms of a mutual antipathy and triangulation, through the soaring melodies of personality and the cardinal -adrenalin- ep. claustrophobia is more than just the next phase in this development—it s a culmination of everything that s come so far. as its name implies, the record is tense and inward-looking, but it s also rich and dynamic, nimbly moving through a panorama of moods and styles. rhythms expand and contract from one song to the next, textural passages give way to shimmering strands of melody, found sounds and field recordings breathe life into ambient sketches. the album is modern and understated throughout, but also touched with something unrestrained: the exhilarating energy of classic rave.

scuba death is ricardo donosos alter ego. with more of a focus on analog sound, percussion, sampling, and location recordings, there is an organic undercurrent on scuba death recordings that isnt as prevalent in his solo work.
