a return to the source: ribcage is where it all began for the dubfire project. after years of exploring, subverting and setting brave new benchmarks in the house world, this marked the start of ali shirazinia setting out to set the same creative benchmarks in techno. restrained, drawn-out but beastly when it wanted to be, the original was a serious statement of intent. even at the time you got a sense it was going to be a historic tune. loco dice especially felt that when he signed it to desolat 10 years ago. to celebrate this time-flying milestone, dubfireÆs recruited two of the most respected names possible for remix duties. first up, the unstoppable, unavoidable, unquenchable dense & pika who keep within the dramatic rising template but with a whole new set of instruments and texturesà and a percussion palette that absolutely sizzles when the whole groove kicks in mid-way. phenomenal. hot on their heels comes a unique remix invitation to on-u legend and one of the ukÆs most decorated and treasured studio controllers adrian sherwood. turning in a serious techno re-cut that pays tribute to every element and takes over 12 minutes to make sure they each shine amid the head-twisting pools of tripped-out decay, itÆs clear his time with pinch has had a profound effect. two incredibly well considered and detailed remixes that remind you what remixes should beà brave new chapters of a story we all love being told. these will sound great when the 20th anniversary remixes are commissioned in 2027.

following the success of ‘ride’ with miss kittin, eminent sci+tec founder dubfire returns with another chaos-conjuring techno composition. previously the sole-preserve of his epic sense-blurring hybrid show, dubfire is finally unleashing ‘dust devil’… his first solo release in several years, ‘dust devil’ is all about precision momentum. a move that dubfire’s made his signature, you can physically feel movement and destination throughout. especially as we reach the short breakdown where the riff revolves faster and higher, providing space for the echoed stabs that whirl and twist around you intensely. as the drums re-ignite, the riff is suddenly converted into groove energy as the jack-minded persistence brings the elements back together with pure focus. this is what ali has to say… “this was an instrumental i had done that i wasn’t quite sure what to do with. it wasn’t strong enough for a lead single and it always felt as though there was something missing, perhaps a spoken or sung vocal. so i sort of put it out of my mind until it was time to compile the music for the hybrid show back in the summer of 2013. once i had the backbone of the set list, along with the visual look, there seemed to be a more defined mood and look. and when i happened upon this track again it seemed to have been tailor-made for this show. it was also nice to insert something no one had heard before to break things up a bit.

they say time flies when you’re having fun, and if you ask dubfire whether the last ten years of his career feels that long, it’s clear that he’s been having too much of a ball to notice. it’s only fitting, though, to celebrate this milestone with a comprehensive retrospective of his work: a decade of dubfire.

dubfire and miss kittin have scored another big hit in the form of their second collaboration ride, the follow-up to the much-loved anthem exit. now, many destroyed dancefloors later and they’re unleashing a big pack of remixes to sit alongside their two original versions. solomun may best known for big melodies and hooks, but his remix boldly displays his affinity for heads down techno. a beast of a track, it centers around ticking percussion and pulsating synth delays with a throbbing low end. minimal in approach, maximal in aesthetic, it’s a no-nonsense groove. matthew dear dons his audion guise to remind us how instrumental he was in formulating that oddball techno sound a decade ago, making good use of the vocals in the heady breakdowns and matching them with unsettlingly wavering synth sirens and an almost tribal bass stomp. it’s full of atmospheric touches and pulls off a big room feel without resorting to cliches. depeche mode, erasure and yazoo legend vince clarke is a personal hero of dubfire’s, making his appearance on this package all the more of a special, rare treat. his chunky house groove is decked out with rolling congas, electro arpeggios and a yearning, bluesy guitar lick. french star djedjotronic has himself remixed depeche mode, and his version rounds off the package with throbbing low end, harrowing synths, techy percussion and brooding reese bass swells. with four very different mixes to choose from, this is an immense package that is set to cause havoc on dancefloors worldwide for some time to come.

keys in the ignition, no turning back: dubfire and miss kitten are about to take us on another late night road trip. and this time there are two very special ways to ride, plotting new routes from where they last dropped us off in 2014 with exit, and presented in miss kittins own artwork, the two long term friends and musical kindred spirits cover a side each with two version journeys youll never forget. kittin jumps straight on the autobahn in a tank-shaped techno hummer. thumping the tarmac down with every gas-guzzling kickdrum, lights blur and trace and the mission gathers momentum as we cruise almost majestically into a brighter unknown. dubfire brings us back home via the trusty widescreen house plains. roads running parallel with the grand, emotional highways he once took as deep dish, the vanishing point is far on the horizon where a vast sky of twinkling stars opens up with a feeling you could ride for days on end. unhurried, restrained and timelessly crisp and futuristic: trips like this dont come about very often the keys are in the ignition, care to take a ride?

it s been a busy 2014 so far for label head dubfire. whilst nothing unusual for the persian-born producer, with the revival of deep dish (alongside sharam), the release of their new single quincy, the continuation of the sci+tec radio show, the release of his much vaunted remix of come featuring asia argento and his relentless global touring schedule, it would be a surprise to find even a slither of studio time for original dubfire productions.

played by: monika kruse, carlo lio, gregor tresher, tassilo, joris voorn, karotte, kaiserdisco, mauro picotto, hernan cattaneo, darren emerson and many more. the one thing that perhaps ties all of dj simis multifarious sounds and aliases together is his passion for distinct drums. his new sci+tec single >green twister< certainly fits. beginning with a stripped back, fuzzy bleep groove, the cut soon becomes a mechanized dancefloor workout thanks to a clear militaristic drum solo. this is classic simi. instead of building tension through sound fx or digital trickery, as so much of todays techno tends to do, >green twister< creates its dancefloor euphoria from a much simpler place: a drum pattern change. for the remix of >green twister<, sci+tec roped in naples danilo vigorito. vigoritos remix is straight up techno jacker. he builds a moody and intense atmosphere around the distinct drums of simis original. its a dark and foreboding club sound.

mutant clan is the name of the new project from timo maas and santos. these boys have really come back with a bang, havent they? having been a fan of santos productions and sound, timo arranged for some studio time together, and the rest as they say.... >inside< is a real moody bitch. with its phat planetesq bassline (not a bad thing, im sure youll agree!), rolling drums and deep ass d base, its one hell of a groove. >outside < is definitely the older, more rebellious, troublesome brother: a darker affair that growls at you from its opening bars, sounds and efx thrown at you from out of darkness. it really is a wonderfully constructed track. once again, maas and santos (aka mutant clan) deliver the goods in the finest way possible and once again, dubfire and sci+tec bring you some of the finest techno around today. a true match made in heaven
