following on from the first amigos ep on which spains paco osuna mixed it up with his real life friends comes amigos pt. 2, another ep of studio collaborations. its been a great year for paco, picking up plenty of acclaim across the board for his sets, remixes and productions, not least from dj mag spain who voted him best dj, best producer and best remixer in their recent awards.

though his techno surely makes you dance, julian jeweil also knows how to get the most of his studio equipment and colours his tracks with more than enough detail to keep your mind as active as your feet.

tireless producer, tronic boss and top international dj christian smith here steps up for his first release on plus 8. over the years christian has offered up a high volume and high quantity of techno inclined singles for myriad labels (bedrock, systematic, 100percent pure, soma), so it only makes sense he now finds himself on one of the scenes most reliable outposts for such material. the two track ep kicks off with house is house which is, as the name suggests, a little house-ier than the flip, but still deals in plenty of heavy bass weight and slick repetition. the devil is in the detail filtered, dark voices, rattling cowbells, washes of white noise synths and long, thin, forward looking pads - all of which are married to a mid-tempo groove. the more forceful indulge me then follows. taught kick drums start immediately as claps and subtle synth stabs swell in volume until they eventually fill out the whole airwaves. squirming behind are thin and icy steel lines until the first drop when the deliciously bouncy groove sets in proper. far from aping the usual detroit and chicago tropes, christian smith has once again crafted two classy dance floor joints that are not only exquisitely produced, but that bare all the usual hallmarks of christian smith, one of the most consistent producers in the game.

this time plus 8 turn to spanish talent alberto pascual for their next four track outing.

here uto karem returns to plus 8 for his second release on the label, with the two tracks he serves up - take control and all over you - continuing in the rising italian stars good run of form. as well as being an in-demand remixer, dj and producer, karem also runs his own agile recordings imprint on which he explores the same deep techno rhythms and loopy hypnotism as he does with his two original tracks here.take control is a liquid track which builds in looped layers through piston pumping percussion, up-right beats and plenty of melodic drama. though it pushes on from left to right in true plus 8 style, the warmth and atmosphere that surrounds the main beats and bass is what really sets the track alight. all over you again features a crisp, almost dry production style as various percussive elements flesh out a 4/4 techno groove. hidden within each bar are some wooden sounding hits and various melodic notes, all of which are heart-warming additions to a killer dancefloor groove. as well as this, there is a more driving dub version of take control which canters on a knife edge for its six minute duration, closing out another efficient and streamlined techno release on plus 8.

7 year old spaniard alberto pascual is the latest techno talent to be welcomed into the plus 8 fold with vertigo, his debut ep for the label. a skilled dj and live performer, pascual has been producing since 2004, with over 30 releases to his name, all of which pursue a direct and powerful techno style. its much the same on vertigo, the title track of this ep which hits loopy depths immediately. dramatic fx, crunchy hats and tension mounting hisses fill out the spaces between the beats, but the militant, marching groove never wavers. truchas rancias is more reserved: economical arrangements characterise the techno eeriness this time, forever hinting something is just around the corner but never quite showing you. final vinyl cut continuous learning is more unhinged, with swirling synths, dripping water sounds and shadowy voice sounds all coming together like classic plus 8 weaponry.

italian-born luigi madonna made his name in his home town of naples with early eps released by loose records, kondens, analytic trail, mkt catching the ear of many established techno stars before his original productions and remixes for the likes of material and drumcode began punctuating a succession of plus 8 / minus boss richie hawtins dj sets in recent months. and so hawtin has now called upon the producer to step up for his debut ep on the plus 8 imprint, throughout which madonna explores streamlined and stripped back grooves of the sort perfectly befitting the outlook of the label.

frenchman julian jeweils second ep on richie hawtins plus 8 label is sure to confirm jeweils status as one of technos most reliable talents. the four track ep encompasses everything jeweil has honed in his ten year plus career – tough sounds, high energy and a fusion of electro and minimal that hypnotises as much as moves you. thus far it has come on labels like cocoon and skryptöm records, whilst at the same time jeweil (real name julien bérard) has been busy playing underground parties all across his homeland.

although firmly entrenched in the minus camp for years, this latest four track ep from us born, berlin based ambivalent marks a widening of his sonic remit. as such it arrives on the broader techno outpost that is plus 8, and can be added to the likes of clink for whom the man known as kevin mchugh has also recorded. carefully blending the soul of his american roots with a european propensity for machine music, ambivalent’s ever evolving sonic blueprint here explores some of his most fluid grooves to date

returning to the plus 8 fold once more, paco osuna is one of spains finest electronic exports. having made a name for himself with a residency at amnesia over a decade ago, he hass since gone on to play places like watergate, fabric and movement festival, all the while holding down a residency for barcelonas club4 night at city hall. his experience in the studio goes way back, too, with releases on drumcode and minus as well as mindshake - the techno imprint he founded in 2005. the osuna sound has never strayed too far from the pulsing heart of the dancefloor - despite investigating everything from dark and fierce to stripped and raw techno - and thats the case once again on his four ep …

a spiral of evolving and heady, sample-laden tracks unfurl on paco osunas latest ep, a richly produced melding of continent-spanning talent, with paco partnering up in the studio with real-life amigos daniel sanchez, alex under, joseph capriati and alexi delano. the amigos ep presents driven, moving grooves with satiating build ups, over densely-layered samples and drums. osunas seasoned skill-sets in the dj booth and as a producer come together knowingly in this release. osuna and his dutch/spanish counterpart daniel sanchez combine melodic and percussive samples in kawuriel, whilst with madrids alex under as his cohort, osuna transfixes with waaaa - featuring a distinctive pitch shifting sound throughout its phasing. your understanding of its unusual name will become abundantly clear upon the first listen. also notable is wope, which contains woodblock-esque percussion samples that compliment the rolling bass, co-produced with italian musician joseph capriati. the eps finale, waxfix, is a combination of the talents of osuna and swedens alexi delano, resulting in another cleverly-derived arrangement of steady bass drums and strong high hats. its a well-locked and smoothly syncopated, loop-based groove

2010 has seen plus 8 celebrate its 20 year anniversary with releases coming from some of technos finest artists, including paco osuna, marco carola, skoozbot, mike shannon, danilo vigorito, datasoul and uto karem. now london duo layo & bushwacka! join the family with the release of their debut for richie hawtin and john aquavivas imprint, with the endangered ep.

danilo has provided us with a steady and heady floor filling ep which further confirms his status at the top of the techno food chain. this double header starts out with prima, a tension-laden track that reaches its release to stunning effect.

ltd 2010 repress !!! marco carolas string of recent releases on plus8 and his own 2m imprint are now effortlessly hurtling forward under the weight of their own momentum and the bloody cash ep shows no sign of relenting. in fact if its possible, this collection of four new combustible tunes adds another dimension to his already substantial repertoire. on the title track bloody cash, carola immediately shows his intent, letting fly with a spiraling tribal groove full of bright, crisp percussive elements that stretch skywards towards the sun. the tough, earthy beats keep everything rooted to the ground as he taps into some age-old hedonistic urge, creating a universal groove that rolls out across the oceans before breaking on the shores of each continent with an all encompassing call to dance. the main body of the track incorporates a straight synth stab doused in reverb that sets the scene for the finely crafted main keyboard riff, which is an accomplishment in itself. alternating between two complimentary parts, it elevates the backing track to another level. perfectly balanced and enhanced for maximum danceability, its without doubt one of carolas finest works to date

a dark bassline and classic synth stabs keep things moving along, with the occasional surprise of some classic 909 claps and shakers within. this tracks are crafted specifically for that moment during the party when the crowds minds and ears have combined with the djs master plan, and everyone is locked firmly in place ready for the ride. its a powerful heads down dance floor bomb that simply works.

with a clever use of mallets and percussive elements, the track unexpectedly shifts pitch throughout, while the quirky samples and micro-edits drive the grooves throughout the duration of this auditory masterpiece. black jack is a nutty little number with a perfect square like rhythm pattern which creates a marching like swing.
