after their butterfunk ep from last year, fouk are back again with their new offering mating call ep. as the name suggests, this three track ep is made for the hot & heavy moments while dancing away, during those infinite summer days. the title track mating call is a funky beast, driven by a very infectious bassline and live instrumentation, edging the line between disco and house, as has we have come to expect from the duo. the next track on the flip furthers the fact that this release is all about the groove. housey vibes with a classic hint, rhodes floating on a solid rolling funk bass. just feel good ? yup! finally we come to down below . you might wonder what s down below? well, there you can find a dreamy thumper, driven by the compact kick, repeating drone and deep bassline, while the synth pads in the middle tie it all together.

for the first release of 2018 we welcome harry wolfman to the outplay family! having followed his work for the last couple of years we re very happy to have him deliver this varied 4-tracker, which very well might be some of his best work to date. the a side starts off with hitch . a warm and dusty groover driven by rhodes, a rubbery bassline and a thudding kick. a lovely string piece in the middle of the track slowly builds up to the break for it to return to the head nodding groove soon after. the added percussion gives it a nice lively feel as well. pigs in blankets sets the pace a little slower, but the funk goes on. the track incorporates 80s style samples with some excellent synth and chord work. perfect for a warm up session. starting on the b side harry takes it up a notch with nemoto , which will be a definite stomper for the dance floor. it takes you on a 9 minute journey of rolling bumpy basslines, screaming distortion leads and hypnotising synth work. finally, to ease things off, sts-136 (final call) comes in at a slow 88 bpm pace as a perfect closure to the ep. dreamy pads, piano licks and a calming marimba melody combined with a beat which feels like a warm blanket will make you wander off for a moment

fouk might have been curating outplay since 2013, but their butterfunk ep is in fact the duos first proper ep on their own imprint. its not that theyve been resting on their laurels: they ve drip-fed a handful of eps on the likes of heist and house of disco over the past few years, and released solo efforts on kolour ltd and razor n tape that stormed the charts. it s been fascinating to see the dutch pair slowly break the mould, moving from heavy sampling in favour to an emphasis on original instrumentation and production. the butterfunk ep is fine showcase of their prowess in the studio, loaded to the hilt with contemporary dancefloor funk. things kick off with the rolling drums, off-beat percussion and seriously infectious hammond lines of organ freeman. title track butterfunk is aimed squarely at the hips with its smooth keys and perfectly placed vocal, while some acid lines give the track a little edge. flip over for the bumping wong way, a chunky workout with a rubber bassline. the finale of the ep is winter, a fantastic slice of 80s inspired downtempo mushroom jazz.

the return of master loz to outplay! after releasing strong stuff on labels like razor-n-tape, quintessentials and quartet series plus some recent remix action on melbourne s kyoku, monsieur goddard has made a new ep for us as a perfect follow up to his 2015 loose jams! he presents a wonderful ep of three varied tracks, showcasing his prowess in combining synths and sampled bits. first up is uptempo discofied hazy, which builds well on the sound hes become known for. on the flip there s deep dusty chugger peaches and the sweet, sweet melodies of synthy groover murmur to provide a proper close to the ep!

outplay s newest project is a special 10 inch vinyl release with 2 tracks by artist new franklin theory.
the name was inspired by a past in midwestern usa. as to who is behind the project, some ears might pick up the resemblance to another artist you all know well. digging into his past is the main inspiration behind new franklin theorys two-tracker. expect two uptempo percussion filled melodic tracks with a slight afro-inspired tropical vibe. comes with a full colour sleeve design by joosprintsandpatterns!

long awaited 2016 repress! a collection of four deep, warm and fuzzy house tracks by outplay co-owners daniel leseman and junktion. while both daniel leseman and junktion are showcasing their individual talent on the release, their new collaborative project fouk sees the light of day for the first time! influenced by the soulful house sounds of old chicago and detroit, this vinyl debut from outplay shows you what they re all about.

we reckon it s time for a full junktion ep on outplay! you can say wide awake is an appropriate title after a wonderful 2015 with a string of ep s on sleazy beats, razor-n-tape and rose records. this four tracker explores the sound he s been developing over the years and even touches a newer side. the ep opens with the title track wide awake and embodies the signature junktion sound with a summery balearic touch. what we are is a faster synth laden affair coupled with his usual sample action. sunny side up is what the title says it is, a sunny disco track driven by a groovy bassline and a funky rhythm guitar. the ep closes down with don t mess up for a more contemplative jazzy track with some smooth sampling and afro touches.

2016 repress - outplay s third vinyl release will be from young mancunian artist loz goddard. with releases on large music and editorial he has been making a great impression with his combination of disco and beatdown house. a well balanced blend between samples and synth work makes this a varied ep and a great showcase for loz s sound. outplay s own fouk takes care of the remix, turning the lush it will come to me into a solid dance floor track with added bass line groove
