following on from the success of the first astrophonica compilation, the mixmag album of the month-rated gradients, label head fracture delivers the action-packed cold & rain ep. this is fracture’s first solo ep on astrophonica and it’s been worth the wait with four tracks showcasing the londoner’s creative energy and attention to detail. as ever, the release comes packaged with artwork from utile creative. the ep is propelled by the title track, built around an irresistible vocal sample from featured artist inaya day. the original, 1997’s ‘hold your head up high’, featured day in full house diva mode delivering a positive message. for his take fracture hones in on a specific line, speeds it up, and chops it with trademark expertise until we’re left with something he admits feels a little more cold though no less powerful. propelling day’s voice forward are expertly diced breakbeats, rolling percussion, and synth stabs for a short but intense ride. completing the a side is ‘your time’, a no-nonsense rollout with 2 step drums, filtered breaks, and catchy basslines playing call and answer with gnarly melodies. you can’t put it better than the sample does: this is one for the junglistical massive.

after a longer break berliner frank mueller and london based ulrich schnauss have surfaced from their studio labyrinth to present the beroshima longplayer >polyphonication<. following a string of eps and remixes the fourth beroshima album was long overdue! it continues to explore the stylistic frame defined by the recent successful releases on cocoon, soma and mueller records and yet manages to surpass the expectations set by these skilfully crafted productions. beroshima defy genre boundaries and incorporate a wide range of sonic colours out of a studio filled with current and vintage equipment whilst also drawing from long term experience on the live and dj circuit. ten tracks that deliver state of the art dance music with more than just a touch of funk which never lose the spirit of exploration

phonicas seventh release comes from paul woolford as he delivers a double dose of quality crossbreed dancefloor music taking his sound to new depths and illustrating hes an artist who never stops evolving. fresh from a tour with, and in advance of a release on planet e, paul woolford continues his rise to becoming one of the most important electronic music artists of the decade with his first release for phonica, a label who have unleashed some unrivalled quality cuts on their catalogue. opening this special double a-side 12 inch is >cant do without<, a bone-shaking record that is laced in originality. building up slowly from a tape-hiss-laden break, a low-slung bassline and a deep yearning vocal, >i cant do without you< is sublime dancefloor material. engaging from the outset with clever broken beats that build playfully into an emotive, psychedelic breakdown to get lost in, woolford demonstrates why he has achieved so much success in his game. on the flip >bareback< treads into dark acid territory that is a hybrid of techno and dubstep in a similar vein to actress and recent material from instra:mental / boddika

the third release on phonica records is a no-nonsense dancefloor burner from matt tolfrey and d. ramirez, with a stunning remix from lauhaus. >bounce to me< is an exquisitely stripped-back jack track, propelled along by clipped vocal samples, deep chord stabs and funked-up percussion - as the title suggests, its all about the bounce. thats really all you need to know: this piece of music has been built for the sole purpose of dancefloor devastation and will do the job every time. matt tolfrey is the boss of leftroom recordings and one of the uks most compelling young dj/producers, with releases on crosstown rebels and viva music among others. d. ramirez is of course the sheffield-based producer behind numerous hit tracks for labels like four:twenty and his own slave recordings. the flipside remix comes from underground hero lauhaus, a dutch producer whos made quite a name for himself with his muscular productions for labels like remote area and intacto. here he toughens and tightens tolfrey and ramirezs original >bounce to me< into a rolling techno groove, adding real drama and forward thrust with crisp hi-hats and stacatto percussion. the soundtrack to late summer has arrived. bounce!

to say the past 2 years have been busy for peggy gou would perhaps be an understatement. prolific both in the studio and behind the decks, 2016 saw the release of no less than four eps across three labels. her two-part ‘art of war’ series on rekids was interspersed with a contribution to ‘phonica white’ series of 12”s.

stl has been a firm favourite of phonica records ever since his first releases surfaced in the early 2000s. although he is highly revered within the underground scene, hes always kept a low profile and consistently pursued his own blend of boundary pushing abstract and experimental house & techno. the majority of his music has been released through his own something imprint but his unique productions have also found a home on perlon, smallville and detroits echospace. the two tracks on the amplified bleep package ep marks his first contribution to phonicas white label series and were extremely happy have him on board.

building upon their first ep release on tevo howard recordings, kate simko and tevo howard have rejoined forces, debuting their full-length album polyrhythmic on sashas last night on earth imprint. native chicagoans, tevo and kate grew up on house music, and their collaboration pays homage to their home city while exploring new creative territory. the duos lp leaves few musical stones unturned, traversing through their melodic, classic, and genre-bending sound.

don froths >10.000cc / holiday (dubbed out)< is phonica whites sophomore release and it couldnt be any more different to ioris stripped down dub techno. don froth initially appeared on our radar last year with >foam< û a laidback, dubby disco number that effortlessly got us all in summer mood, practically teleporting us to his native venice ca. forget about such nicetiesà >10.000cc s< is >foams< rowdy sibling. a twisted, bass-heavy stomper of a track, that takes disco, dub-step and punk-funk, spins them in blender and spits out one of the rudest basslines weÆve heard in a while. weare talking big here û even giles peterson is a fan. on the flip >holiday (dubbed out)< returns to more familiar territoryà laidback, dubby disco that instantly brings to mind >foam< without being a carbon copy. its breezy, summery and very organic in an analog sort of way. very limited vinyl pressing of 300 copies û hand stamped and numbered. special artwork by pedro carvalho de almeida
