VAGABONDE FROM SUPER CAP-VERT TO NUMBER ONE: UNRELEASED RECORDINGS 1969 - 1980 (CD)
teranga beat proudly presents mar seck, a delicate singer and songwriter who marked the history of senegalese music. a cross over between cuban compositions and senegalese folklore, his songs gave birth to salsa-mbalax, the popular dance music of 70s senegal that went onto influence a new generation of senegalese musicians including a young youssou n dour.
jeri-jeri is the collaboration between the renowned berlin based producer mark ernestus and a griot clan of sabar drummers from kaolack in senegal, led by bkane seck, along with guest mbalax musicians and vocalists - including mainstays of the bands of baaba maal, youssou n dour and other top senegalese artists.

the opener is a traditional jola rhythm, typically fast and energetic, with tuned, talking and kit drums swarming over a kind of skeletal downhome guitar, somewhere between blues and disco. the mboup brothers make a soaring, impassioned plea for an end to division and bloodshed in their casamance homeland. then a more deeply dug-in, spaced-out funk, edgily spun from a serer rhythm, underpinning mbenes reflective song about parental sacrifice. sama yaye, my mother. both with full instrumental versions.
as western pop music in the 80s lost its way in a cacophony of synths and drum machines, discerning music lovers began to look elsewhere for their musical satisfaction. gradually sounds from africa, asia, eastern europe, the altin world and beyond began to penetrate the consciousness and this 2 cd set collects together!
