for russian electronic music, mikhail chekalin is not only a major character, who has affected the scene’s establishment and development, but also a kind of symbolic figure. his music has been praised by many in the west - from journalists and critics of all kinds to frank zappa and karlheinz stockhausen, while in moscow chekalin’s name was excluded from the official cultural agenda for a long time: he was accused of propaganda of foreign pro-western aesthetics and up until the end of the 80’s wasn’t allowed to release his works or travel abroad. this, however, didn’t interfere with him recording dozens of innovative electronic compositions and contributing greatly to the development of unofficial soviet art in general - for example, providing sound design for the famous exhibitions of twenty moscow artists on malaya gruzinskaya or arranging the first audiovisual performances on a specially constructed light organ.
however, just like all great artists, mikhail himself prefers to focus not on personal achievements, but on creativity. i don’t have a biography - only a discography - this quote of the author may become an entry point of sorts into the compilation presented. this archival collection of works recorded within the period from 1978 to 1987 are chekalin’s multigenre experiments ranging from spatial music (in essence, ambient’s precursor) to more contemporary synthesizer and post-symphonic compositions.

awb is back on the spaceship. he delivers this time 4 original tracks from deep techno to electronica. berlin based producer pris (known for his amazing work on shifted’s avian) is giving his effective vision of kinetic lullaby on the side b.

this new release makes good on each producers talent for working with epically unfolding tracks, maintaining a strong command of both drone and melodicism, and envisioning sound as a kind of inter-dimensional mass transit.

so the story goes: a few years ago i played a cool underground party in stockholm with my good friend and crazy record collector mark seven. early on that night mark played me this beautiful and melancholic piece of music. mark happily handed me his spare copy and my record collection for a second felt a little more complete… originally released as a b-side track to als slipshod ep on out of the loop the track continued to mesmerize whenever i played it and the fact that so many people loved it and equally as many didn’t know the record i though a re-release could be a great idea. it’s inclusion on gerd janson’s recent sonar kollektiv compilation and the fact that it’s been played by legendary dj harvey ( o bearded one as he’s known to by the initiated)has obviously helped to spread it’s fame to. now hopefully showing it’s full potential we bring you the remastered “lullaby for robert” with a whole bunch of remixes made with love by remixers spellbounded by it’s magic. on part 1 we bring you : the original + bogdan irkük remix part 2 will include reworks by mark seven, gatto fritto and yours truly toot toot beep beep,

lullaby belies its title by blending great analog bass drifting dubby keys shuffling house beats and some stellar percussion elements behind some stellar guitar play for some surefire floor pleasing house on the flipside the dub version takes the original and throws dubby delays liberally throughout the entire track and praise completes this superb trio with a laidback downtempo gem combing a plodding analog bassline lazy beats and gentle guitar into a summery terrace track

an essential selection of heavyweight remixes land on this quality second disc. rhythm codes long distance mix heads up the a - an altogether bigger, fatter, badder, rollin tech stab driven floor monster. dave robertson kicks off the aa with his stripped back, bumpin acid-electro automation remix. then newcomer to the cuba camp, paul bug takes the reigns and serves up some proper whigged-out, jackin warehouse sounds.
